Ward-Golovkin exchange barbs

A fan on Twitter asked Andre Ward if there was a fight he wanted, that didn’t happen before he retired. Ward answered “Froch rematch in the UK; [Gennady] Golovkin, he turned it down in less than 5 minutes; Anthony Joshua, but I retired.”

Ward’s response set off GGG, who responded, “Andre, stop lying to the fans. Your team made the offer AFTER I announced the fight with Lemieux and sold out MSG. You are still angry that you never sold tickets like me. HBO knew you used the offer for publicity to move to 175. Happy Birthday.”

Ward answered, “I have receipts stop playing.”

    • Because nothing is happening enough in contemporary boxing, to deter old events from drawing attention.

      • Exactly. With each passing year there are less fighters, less fights and less fans. It’s unfortunate, but with a few exceptions, public interest in boxing has been quickly shrinking for the past few decades.

Perhaps if fans didn’t have to wait years for quality matchups then the sport might regain some interest.

  • Nah! If GGG chicken out Demetrius “bo bo” Andrade……..what about a superior and bigger fighter like Ward? Sorry GGG, but I am sure Ward’s calling scare the s…t of you.

    • If you think GGG is worried about Andrade, you seriously need to see a doctor. Tell me who he has fought? The guy hasn’t even taken a belt off of anyone. He won a vacant belt against a guy that shouldn’t be fighting for a title, and he’s held that belt hostage ever since by fighting mediocre guys and winning on points. He’ll get stopped by the 1st decent fighter he faces.

      • When Canelo tested positive, a replacement for this fight was needed, Andrade came to to surface and through different media he called GGG saying he was ready and available. Why the big drama show girl chose to fight a corpse, a shot and retired Vanes Martirosyan instead?
That was a blatantly ducking sir.

        • The same Martyrosian that dropped Andrade and lost a split decision. Yeah good call mate.

          • Regardless of who he dropped, why did he NOT answer the call from Andrade multiple times for a fight?? Theres the big question. Maybe he forgot to pay his phone bill.

      • Same weak argument Canelo and GGG fans always use. Meanwhile they both fight weaker opponents and you’ll never question the guys they fight. They only are not deserving if they are on the coincidental list and a true threat. The votes show this site is full of boy crush fans more interested in keeping a bs narrative rather than find out who is best fighter. Canelo called Andrade a horrible fighter and fights the weaker Plant says all we need to know.
They are in fact worried and need to see a doctor for PED injections.

        • NJ, so ur saying plant is weaker that Andrade? Thrn why did it take so long for Andrade to move up in weight. Plant has been the champ for a hot minute. Andrade has been avoided for quite a while by GGG and Charlo. He shld have moved up years ago and taken those belts if Plant was that easy. But he didnt CUZ Hes not obviously

  • Obviously GGG would never entertain anything above 60 because he isn’t a great fighter who wanted to pursue legendary status like BHOP, Leonard, Hearns, Duran and Ward for that matter

    • Agreed: that hasnt changed. That is why he hasnt fought Charlo or Andrade. Or much less given D’chenko or Jacobs their well deserved rematch. Oh but let me cry and pout for a trilogy with Canelo

    • So you saying Marvelous Marvin Hagler never reached legendary status? He stayed at one weight.

    • @BoriMex: Ward moved up from being champion at 168 to 175, nothing like the big step up like Leonard, Hearns, Duran did. No comparison.

  • Because Ward is jealous. This guy couldn’t crack an egg. Had a boring style and personally never fought anyone. Kessler and Froch?? Lol

    • You hater know nothing about boxing. He dominated the super 6 tournament. Everyone had a chance of winning and he dominate these guys when they were killers.

    • I think Ward was a bit unfortunate with his division at the time. It also didn’t help that he wins over Kovalev were generally dissatisfying.

  • HOF Ward, please let it go and work on becoming an HOF boxing commentator. Future HOF GGG, please let it go and look for a fight against Lara or Munguia.

    • Yet you don’t tell GGG to “please let it go” when he bitches about fighting Canelo who out boxed him once and out-fought him the 2nd time.

  • Man, a bunch of GGG groupies on here. C’mon, GGG was never gonna entertain the idea of fighting Ward. He knew moving up in weight wld mean he power was just average. This is why he called out Mayweather. Remember money May saying if GGG fought Ward first, then he wld give him the fight he was asking for. Or did yall forget. GGG always calling out the smaller guys

    • No they didn’t forget, they’re giving GGG the typical pass. Doesn’t need to be explained.

  • Ward is one of the most boring and overrated fighters ever. Not one of his fights is worth watching twice

  • He didn’t lose a fight in 18 years amateur and pro; can’t be too overrated, lets tone down the bias. He sure did crack Kovalev’s egg when Kovalev was destroying everyone. Ward was too good in every way for GGG, sorry. A cross between Roy Jones and B-hop.

    • I agree with your statement but Ward was jealous of GGG because he knew that he was much more entertaining winning in dramatic fashion. Ward did make a big statement in that second fight with Kovalev for sure.

    • Irish Andre was good but honestly benefited from a weak 168lb division and come on Irish Andre lost that 1st fight against Kovalev and even though he was clearly winning the rematch he is the 1st fighter in modern day boxing to win by TKO from 3 consecutive clear low blows lol Ill say Irish was clout chasing on this one and GGG lost both fights to Canelo and to derenchencko(sp)

        • Kessler was two steps behind. Froch is a nub. That series was crap. Not one good fight. Andre Direll yee. Ward was tops in a c- group. ALL forgettable. Ward was boring . Could not punch. Boxed ok but not Lomo beautiful nor Pernell. He is a c- fighter who match made correctly. Watch the fights.

    • Roy and Bhop were knocked clean out by bums. Boxrec. Ward is a nub. Never ever been in a fight I watched twice on purpose. maybe a round of he and Kov, but the whole fight? Sheesh I STILL watch the whole Hagler Mugabi fight from the walk in. Compelling. The stare down between he and Hearns is better than any Andre fight. Foremen / Lyle?
      Ward/ Kessler?
      see?

      • “Roy and Bhop were knocked clean out by bums”
        – Come on now, Kurtis.
        – IMO, RJJ never lost a round in all of his fights prior to the first Tarver fight. If Jones would have retired in 2003 after beating Ruiz for a heavyweight belt, his boxing legacy would be different.
        – Hopkins fought one-too-many fights, and eventually ran into someone (Joe Smith, Jr) that beat him.
        – Take care.

        • @Gary G: Agree, Jones was never the same after the weight drain (no fat to drain, just muscle) after beating Ruiz. The weight drain was so damaging. Same what happened to Chris Byrd.

      • @kurtis B gaskin: Hopkins was 51 y old when he was ko’ed by Smith. Bhop had been fighting professionally for 28 years at this point and this was his 65th fight. Be real please.

  • Easy Andre. You would have won a fight with GGG, fairly easily too probably. But unfortunately you were box office poison. Ward practically ran Roc Nation out of the fight game with the losses they took on his fights. He wasn’t a great salesman for his fights

    • Kov had one hand. G has two. Kov was stopped w a body shot. G has never been dinged. G walks through Andre.

  • GGG is very much like Hagler was in weight, 160 is where they fought. Nothing wrong with that.

  • Ward was a boring fighter. KO’s @ 50 percent. No power or excitement. He wants to come out of retirement so bad to get respect of boxing fans. He definitely lost to first fight to Kovalev. He did not dominate the division.

  • GGG needs to stop. He would never say Andre Ward’s name when he was fighting. He knows he never wanted that smoke. I’m not the biggest Canelo fan but I hope he does comeback and give him another boxing lesson. At least Canelo has the balls to move up and take on the big challenges. GGG shamelessly fought blown up 147lb fighters.

    • G fights anyone who is broke enough to risk reward that decision. He stalks every guy who fights him. He is a stone faced killer, who is 5 years older than he should be. Still , he can crush 9 out of ten of these pretenders. Munguia? In two. Nuff said.

  • Ha. G drools. He could make a great payday with zero risk. Take his O G. Nuff said

  • Remember when Ward beat Mugabi, Leonard, Meldrick Taylor, and …wait that was Terry Norris…nevermind

  • pos Andre. “reciepts”..and G says “stop lying Andre”…I go with G who has integrity and is not a shill fake. MAKE this “fight” and have Andre start…I need a few tune ups …until G is 50 …shut all you fake G smack talkers. Canola never disses G.

  • Ward looking for easy payday as always and couldn’t fill up a TelephoneBox., thinks GGG is past his prime.
Go and fight Canelo and see what happens. He will put you back into retirement permanently.

  • 2 ring legends taking shots lol Well best thing to do … lace em up fellas both of you grab a last payday. Still would be interesting fight..

  • I know only one fact that really occured in front of our eyes about this story. In some training video of GGG training outside before or after running, GGG said that “a fight vs Ward was stupid business.” That’s all I know, and it truly happened. I should have recorded that video back then having known that it could have become useful today. Stupid business from GGG is exactly what he said about an Andre Ward fight. EXACTLY what he said.

  • I highly doubt that either fighter backed out of fighting. Even though I believe GGG is one of the best to ever do it, Ward would have been too big for him. Good big man beats a good smaller man in most exchanges.

This is just another entry on the long list of fights we never got to see….when it mattered.

  • GGG walks through Ward, this is not Kovalev we’re talking about, besides Ward can’t box or talk himself out of this fight unless he hits below the belt like he did to beat Kovalev in the second fight, Ward lost the first one.

  • Oh well then…come together and fight; I’d rather see these two old/retired fighters go at it than what’s been happening lately

  • WARD SHOULD MIND HIS OWN BUSINESS HE KNOWS DAMN WELL TRIPLE G AINT GONNA FIGHT HIM… WARD GO BACK TO YOUR ROCKING CHAIR… GO DO A COUPLE EXHIBITIONS

  • WARD MUST BE BROKE ALREADY AND TRYING TO START A FIGHT… GO BACK TO YOUR ROCKING CHAIR!!!!

  • Oh no ! Hopefully there’s not a Ward-GGG matchup in the making, it would be sad..
Isn’t there somewhere a soon to be great fighter we can make a legend of ?! Wladimir Klitschko, Mayweather, or DLH are going to comeback from retirement if it continues lol !

  • In their prime, GGG all day ! Sadly GGG like Marvin Marvelous Hagler always will be a MW and a natural one..
