Undefeated former bantamweight champion Luis Nery (30-0, 24 KOs) delivered a great performance on the Pacquiao-Thurman undercard, scoring a ninth-round knockout of former bantamweight champion Juan Carlos Payano (21-3, 9 KOs). It was a body shot that finished Payano.

“He was a very complicated fighter at the beginning, he’s a veteran, so I had to try to adapt to his style to see how I could get in,” said Nery afterward. “In the fifth or sixth round I started gaining control of the fight and then that left hook came to the body which was devastating. I saw the openings in the body and then that’s when the left hook came and it was over.

“I wasn’t really paying attention to how long the fight was going, I was just getting into a rhythm as it went on. I had to work hard to get to him because he’s a good boxer. The longer it went, the better I felt. I put my punches together well once I got going.

“I wanted to get him out early. But this showed that I do have the experience to go into the later rounds and still take out my opponent. I showed that I have good defense and can make adjustments.”

Nery has now scored eleven straight knockouts.

  • FYI, Monster took care of business in the 1st round. I am confident that if Nery fights Monster, Nery will get TKFO. Monster will destroy Nery.

    • Nery is a more complete boxer, that may make the difference, Nery by decision or KO.

    • Sorry but no, you’re full of shite as usual. Knocking a guy out in the first round proves nothing if the opponent isn’t top-notch. Nery was getting some rounds in by keeping and playing with Payaso for a bit. Inoue is a great and powerful fighter yes, but if that fight takes place fireworks will certainly be abundant and each is capable of KTFO of the other.

    • That’s menas absolutely nothing.Andy Ruiz lost a decision to Joseph Parker,Anthony Joshua defeated Parker and Then Ruiz stoped Joshua…Just because one fighter did this amd that against similar opponents menas absolutely nothing.

    • Agree with you, Nery is a very complete fighter but Monster is the best Japanese fighter ever.. Monster by between round 8 and 12 Tko.. Monster belongs with the P4P best in the world today : Usyk, Lomachenko and Crawford. He’s so underrated !! Amazing the guy’s who did replie your comment didn’t understand that..

    • Yeah, that Sadam was a flash-in-the-bedpan! One thing you are Cedric is entertaining! You show your true color! Pun intended!

  • Poor technicaly ! And he don’t still a Batamweight ! He struggled to make the weight ! No gas in the tank so no punch ! Inoue will knock him out easily ! I don’t see him passed Oubaali who will also certainly knock him out too !

    • Right ! Nery is complete and tough but Oubaali is more sounded technically..
