Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has a broken nose

Ring legend Julio Cesar Chavez posted a photo on Twitter, commented on the condition of his son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and revealed the reason Junior couldn’t continue against Daniel Jacobs in their fight on Friday night.

Julio Cesar Chavez: “With all due respect to the fans of Phoenix, Arizona: Now I disagree with you, my son was making a competitive fight and was winning, unfortunately, a headbutt and an elbow came and he has a broken nose. He will now undergo surgery.”

  • Professional my a$%. What a joke of a fight! I have seen kids fight on Streetbeefs fight longer and harder. Yep, daddy Chavez Sr. has spoiled and pampered his son bad enough it really shows now. Fans should sue the promotors for a refund.

  • Ok, at least what he was saying had some truth in it. Hard to say from the side what a boxer is experiencing, but he did not look like he was showing any heart, grit, to continue.

  • I don’t want to misjudge in this case, but I believe there is a lack of heart in Jr. Real fighters like Juan Manuel Marquez, Arturo Gatti and others at that level, would never have quit at soon that happen, at least they continue until the fight is stopped for that reason.

  • Great,
Then he won’t mind fighting his next bout for 30 or 40 thousand dollars, instead of 3-6 million

  • It’s a broken nose, not terminal cancer. By coming in overweight and putting in such a lackluster performance Chavez Jr. showed he did not really want/deserve to be in the ring with Jacobs.

  • Julio is a decent fighter, but he’s not got what it takes to reach the next level.

At 33 the burning desire he once (if he ever had it) had is just a weak puff of smoke.

No one seriously bought into this fight, from here on he’s just a stepping stone.

  • I have never in 25+years of watching boxing seen a fighter publicly displaying a photo of himself in the emergency room with an injury, that many fighters have fought through an entire fight with, as the reason he quit.
His dad is standing there with this look that says “see my son wasn’t pretending”
I think both the story and this picture illustrate today’s spoiled brat millennial.

  • Phantom headbutts and elbows!

    And winning?

You LOOSE respect by making excuses and refusing to state the obvious.

  • Ive seen many a nose breaks thruought my career in the ring and in sparring. His did not look like one when he quit. Maybe his break occured when he got to the dressing room and Chavez sr hit him out of disgust.
He shld have continued until it was stopped by a dr or a KO

  • Hes a spoiled brat. Real warriors fight through any adversity. This kids spoiled little brat.

  • What I saw we’re very solid upper cuts in the 4th and later in the 5th by Jacobs, and straight right hands which opened up the cut on the left side of his eye and broke Jr’s nose…. Earlier in the fight, Daniel’s wrist part of his glove grazed against Chavez’s face and Chavez complained to the referee like a little whiny baby who needs his diaper changed….
This was an embarrassment. Not just for Jr. but for the entirety of the Chavez brand, and the country, fans….. The very people he upholds so dearly to his heart & career…Once and for all, Jr. should retire because continuing on not only makes him look bad, but damages the overall amazing, prolific career and legacy of his father, as well as all the current and former Mexican great fighters and amazing country that produced them. In closing I will say that Junior did his very best of what he gave from what was inside of him. But in the end he is a c+ fighter. And when stepping up against greater competition especially now later in his career, it shows… Blessings to everyone

  • I don’;t really have a problem that he quit, though I did not see the fight. With some of the recent tragedies in the sport, I don’t have such a problem with that. My biggest complaint is somehow promoters would feel that he is worth that much money that he got, when there are more worthy fighters out there who probably deserve more, but because of certain fans out there, would pay such money to see him fight. If the fans in Pheonix felt they were ripped off, hell, you deserved to be ripped off. I probably should really say instead of certain fighters who deserve more, maybe he deserves less than certain fighters.

    • My thoughts as well. Why is he getting big fights for big money? He’s riding on his last name. He’s never done anything to deserve the paydays he gets, but I guess credit to him, he’s found a way to market himself into big fights. Blame the boxing fans for continuing to buy into this sort of thing. Based on this, future fights should be small money fights against club fighters.

  • I am sorry but Sr there is no respect for the fans from your statement or your son’s performance prior, during and after his bout with Jacobs. The image of you with your hand over your face is more in line with embarrassment rather than concern for your son. The judges gave your son 1 of 5 rounds, 4 points behind, that is not winning. You can love your son but disapprove of his behavior. Please do not fall into the every child deserves a trophy syndrome, make your son take responsibility for his actions. Cuts and broken noses, punches and fouls are all part of boxing. The great Chavez dealt with it, when it comes to boxing, Sr and Jr only share their name in common. Please stop feeding the delusions.

  • Even when I was an amateur, I had my nose busted at least 5 times and I never once quit. This guy is a coward, and a millennial with NO heart. AKA Pendeja!

  • There was a time, when a Mexican fighter would have to be carried out of the ring before he would just quit. This is not that time. Guys like Zarate, Morales, Barrera, Ramirez, CORRALES!!!!the GREAT Chavez SR. fought battles and would rather die then quit. Now in this day and age that is not advised. But once you go through those ropes, at the very least (especially when being paid 3 million for a non title fight) you need to put your heart and soul into the fight. In this case he decided that the sparring session was faaaar to much for him to continue. And like in previous fights, he showed he was there only for the payout. Well you cannot blame any fighter for wanting a big payday, but you can blame him for basically (along with Delaho and Canela) destroying the great name of Mexican fighting. The look on Chavez SR’s face said it all, and it was a look of sadness, and embarrisment, this all time champ had to watch his son make a mockery of what made that name (Chavez) an all time great. Believe it or not JR. is not finished, he will continue to tell everyone how he is the best at 168lbs, even though he really weighs 185+, and I’m certain his next fight will make him some bookoo money as well, if not Vince McMahon is waiting for him to fight Brock Lesnar or Hulk Hogan. One way or another this disgrace will be making serious money because of new school nonsense.

    • Morales quit against pacuiao in their last fight. It was pathetic, he even winked when he was sitting on the canvas while he quit.

  • Unfortunately if you live in the shadows of a famous father the public expect you to be the same….and some parents drive you for all the wrong reasons.
Jr is not his father and probably hates the game but loves the money.
There are lots of “juniors”out there who are simply not as good as their parent might of been and suffer from the comparison syndrome.
And I’m sure that some of the writers on these sites have suffered similar experiences in their life time

  • Now I’m 100% convinced the late Sulaiman protected this imposter. Lazy Chavez miraculously made weight up until the passing of Sulaiman and once his demise Jr. couldn’t even make his contracted super middleweight debut nor any fight after. He was definitely on PEDs the night he beat Rubio but with a little help they masked it as marijuana and received a slap on the wrist. Jr. is an embarrassment to the Mexican boxing culture and will unfortunately get another opportunity because some people never learn. How many times is he going to say I’m serious this time.

  • I’ve always hated Chavez Jr. He’s a total joke! He’s never won a meaningful fight and DEFINITELY doesn’t deserve big paydays. Hopefully this is the last time we see him in the ring.

  • Whatever. He’s pulled this crap so many times that we don’t know when he’s Bullshitting or Not. He needs to move along.

  • With all due respect to Julio Sr., your son quit, let’s face it, he’s not a fighter, he should never get paid to enter the ring, he came in heavy, what does that tell you!!

  • Why did it take Mikey Garcia so long to fight after losing to Erroll Spence Jr?

  • I was at ringside and he was behind on most scorecards through the 4th round. Halfway through the 5th round, we all noticed that he had “stopped fighting” even though I had him winning the round up to that point. The damage to his nose came near the end of the round. I can only wonder what was going through his mind at that point to cause him to kind of “give up”?
