Goulamirian now the only WBA cruiser champion

The WBA Championships Committee continues making decisions and ordering fights to reach the goal of having only one champion for each weight class.

The latest division to be sorted out is cruiserweight where Arsen Goulamirian is now the sole champion after Ryad Merhy formally resigned his “regular” champion position and will not fight Goulamirian in a bout ordered by the committee between the two fighters.

There are now 10 divisions with only one champion as the WBA’s plan to reduce the number of world titles continues to move forward.

  • This is kinda messed up. Goulamirian has been out almost three years and he was ordered to fight Mehry. You take away the order and… he’s still on his couch.
I heard Mehry was on his way to bridgerweight.

    • It’s a mess, but I think Mehry doesn’t want to fight Goulamirian again. The big question here is why the WBA has allowed Goulamirian to be inactive that long? Yuniel Dorticos I believe is available and could be a good matchup.

      • The WBA doesn’t care if their champions actually fight. Goulamirian replaced Beibut Shumenov as champion who was inactive the last two and a half years of his reign.

  • You would think that with there being four world championship titles per weight division, that it wouldn’t be that difficult to only have one champion per belt. But then you would be underestimating the former sport and current business of boxing and how stupid it can be. That’s why nobody watches anymore.

  • So does that make Goulamirian the WBA “Super World” Champion, the “World” Champion, or just the “Gold World” Champion? Yeah… I don’t care, either.
