I will admit, Jones had exceptional speed and reflexes in his prime. Jones’ speed would catch many fighters off guard and disintegrate their defense resulting in KOs. James Toney, a slick counter puncher, could not pull the trigger on Jones in their 1994 matchup. Jones was simply too fast, elusive, and so unorthodox in his arsenal.
Once age caught up with Jones, many fighters had their glory moments of defeating him since his natural reflexes were slowed. However, make no mistake, the 1990’s were some awesome times to see Jones put on his dazzling days of cobra-like reflexes coupled with some crack in that punch. Imagine Jones in his prime fighting Canelo Alvarez or Mayweather? Those guys would have their hands full!!!!
Definitely agree!
Mayweather would have never fought Jones Jr. Roy was way too big for Floyd. Jones would have beaten Canelo 10 out of 10 times. Canelo is very good, Jones in his prime was elite, great, top 20 all time.
Ok, I am now really concerned. RJJ is one of my all time favorite fighters, but his speech sounds slurred now. He took some unnecessary punishment late in his career, so I’m a little worried that he is putting himself in a dangerous situation, now.
From Yahoo
even though it’s going to be an exhibition bout with larger-than-normal gloves and a promise for them to not try to take the other’s head off.
Andy Foster, the executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission, held a Zoom with Tyson and Jones not long ago to discuss the fight. They promised him they weren’t looking to KO the other.
The mighty dollar still rules the so called sporting game. Tyson and Jones see an opportunity to pick the pockets of the working stiffs and that is what this circus is all about. Are the boxing commisions planning to test these broken down old men for steroids? Or will this open the door for the next step of degrading whats left of boxing . The medical profession should demand CAT scans of the heads of these once great warriors and see if any brains remain intact. I paid high dollar to watch these fighters in their prime and they can now exist on SS like I do.
Blah Blah Blah!
The status of your way of existence
has no relevance to how they choose
their mode of existence!
Take a nap!
Well while you keep your rocking chair warm let these men get into fighting shape and do what they were born to do!!!
Great interview Jeff. The last thing to go is power. Neither man has their speed or reflexes anymore. If they were to go all out I’d have to bet on Tyson, however this is an exhibition so it’s a totally different scenario.
Thanks Rob! Appreciate it! And I agree with you!
