April 25 Kovalev-Barrera clash cancelled

In compliance with Riverside County’s ordinance banning large public gatherings due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the April 25 Kovalev vs. Barrera card at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has been cancelled.

“Whether it’s in Riverside County or Los Angeles County, it is clear that we must take every precaution to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “We lament the hardship this has caused for our fighters, partners, employees and state officials, and we look forward to providing better news in the coming weeks.”

A new date for Golden Boy Boxing at Fantasy Springs will be announced as soon as is reasonably possible.

  • The cancellation of this fight does not do Kovalev any favors. Time is not on his side. He looked pretty sluggish with reflexes and age was not on his side against Alvarez. Kovalev was pushing his punches in the last half of the fight against Alvarez. Kovalev has enough legal distractions going on over a DUI and an assault charge still pending. Hate to say this, but a person has to wonder if he took this fight against Barrera for money and/or as a mental distraction from his impending legal woes. I still think Kovalev would have beaten Alvarez had they fought when Kovalev was on a role blowing everyone away in the LH division. Timing for the fight was perfect for Alvarez.
