Where does Jaime Munguia go from here?

“I am ready to fight the best,” top-rated middleweight Jaime Munguia has declared on multiple occasions. However, in recent days Munguia’s braintrust has turned down a WBC middleweight title fight against Jermall Charlo, a WBO interim middleweight title fight against Janibek Alimkhanuly, and a WBC middleweight eliminator against Carlos Adame.

So where does Munguia go from here? Promoter Oscar de la Hoya is on the record saying a Munguia-Charlo fight is “top priority,” however Charlo has now signed to fight Maciej Sulecki on June 18.

Regarding Munguia-Charlo, De la Hoya stated, “Listen we want the fight. Obviously. Charlo’s the champion, he gets the bigger cut. We all know that. That’s common sense. Showtime, yes, you have the fight on Showtime PPV, but I need DAZN to participate. They built Jaime Munguia. That’s only fair, it’s business. More platforms, more pay-per-views, more money for the fighters…what’s wrong with that?”

    • MM- I like that response AND agree.. but are there any good promoters left. lets see, Grandpa Arum- NOPE… PBC has an easier route in Charlo fighting Sulecki instead of Adame or Alim so that is a crappy move for the sport and us fans. Mayweather promotions only fights within his stable usually, so their out. Not alot of options here.

  • He’s another Chavez jr/Plant, just fights either named fighters way past their prime or nobodies with undefeated records until a PPV payday and than loses and continues fighting the C side fighters before losing a 2nd big fight and than retires. It’s the new boxing standard for most promoters

  • Munguia has time on his side. He’s just 25 years old and won’t be 26 until October. Charlo, on the other hand, will be 32 before this next fight. So Munguia can afford to have a fight or two and see how everything shapes out. He’s rated 1 or 2 by the WBO, WBC and WBA and he’s probably the biggest name in the division without a title so, if he wants it, he’s probably within a year of getting a shot at some belt. If GGG beats Murata he’s headed to Canelo, but if Murata wins, maybe Murata – Munguia.

    • great point Lucie. Mungia is young and has plenty of fights left in him. it is a shame though that showtime would not collaborate with DAZN for this fight. This is not a promoter issue but more so a network issue and shows the greed that some of these businesses have. its unfortunate.

  • What a joke.. dude has to fight somebody descent .. it will not always be perfect money. He needs a good attorney that can get him away from his current promoter. And Charlo fighting another soft touch is not much better. I get that Mungia declined but Charlo is once again fighting some one with limited ability and no power.

    • Ebox – agreed man.. Mungia just came off a good win. I get the Charlo failed attempt. We already know PBC is all about themselves and want it all their way or nothing, especially dealing with GBP. Oscar SHOULD HAVE accepted the Alimkhanuly or Adame fight. This would have put Mungia up on the pedestal, win or lose, and the fans wld be more forgiving of missing out on the Charlo fight.

  • Oscar asks “what’s wrong with that?”..your fighter has passed on three very good match ups and it appears like your protecting him.

  • That is one the reasons Canelo and Ryan Garcia unhappiness with Oscar. He always avoid fights that could be a challenge for them, and later, his fighter not him is labeled as a ducker or chicken. Oscar shouldn’t be a promoter, bottom line

  • Is very clear now that Oscar never had intentions to put Munguia against Charlo, he used this as a facade to dilute the criticism for avoid Alimkhanuly and maybe Adames too. I won’t be surprised to hear the names of Hugo Centeno or Sergio Marrinez as Munguia’s next opponent

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if Munguia ended up fighting Montiel who Charlo fought in his last fight. Centeno actually had ‘stay-busy’ type fight in January and lost.

  • Remember when Oscar said after he retires he was gonna become a promoter and clean up all the corruptness? Yeah right smh

  • Okay, Munguia is running out of quality, competitive options. Maybe Munguia can work out a h*ll scrap against Eubank, Jr.

  • Munguia is so blatantly protected it’s ridiculous. They know he has no defense and will take a beating from top competition.

  • Who cares where he goes from here? He would get KO’d the first time he faces a boxer-puncher his size. Qazak style would have brutally KO’d him and Oscar knew it. He’s the mainstream fans fighter.
