WBA orders Madrimov-Soro rematch

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee ordered a rematch for the super welterweight eliminator fight between Israil Madrimov and Michel Soro, who will have 30 days to negotiate the bout starting March 7.

The two fought last December 17 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and the official decision of the bout was a technical knockout in the ninth round in favor of Madrimov. However, Soro’s team requested a direct rematch on the grounds that the fight was wrongly stopped by a punch after the bell. After reviewing the case carefully and consulting with the authorities present, the WBA accepted the request made by Soro’s team.

  • I saw this and immediately thought that it was SO egregious that even the WBA would have to order an immediate rematch – maybe somewhere outside of Uzbekistan this time.

  • Everyone probably heard that bell, even Madrimov, and it was like 6 – 7 punches after the bell.

As I remember, Madrimov had a slight advantage, but did not impress.

Agree that a re-match is correct. Maybe the first fight should have been seen as a no-contest?

  • I’m surprised that the WBA agreed for the rematch ! It was awful, Madrimov could’ve won the fight without punching a few times after the bell altough the fight was close…
