WBA champ Morrell viciously rips Benavidez

Undefeated WBA super middleweight regular champion David Morrell Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) says WBC interim champion David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) is deliberately sidestepping his challenge and opting for an easier opponent in Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs), who would be coming up in weight to fight him.

David Morrell Jr: From here on out my new nickname is the ‘The Monster.’ I will be referred to as father of Team Benevidez. Jose Sr. does not want the fight. He talks a lot, but he clearly wants to fight Munguia as seen in all his recent interviews. The loudmouth son Jose Jr. hasn’t said a word either. So, I want small man Jose to come out publicly and say he is scared of the Monster Morrell. I’m giving you 24 hours to tell the world the truth little guy! Or I will do an interview daily about the cowards they call the Benevidez’. Your name is Red Flag maybe because you run when there is danger. Don’t use my name anymore, cancel all your merchandise and stop lying to people. I’m the real MONSTER! My message to Benavidez is I’m ready for all those bitches. Grow some balls, and lets give the fans the fight they want to see. Your family name is a disgrace.”

  • “Your family name is a disgrace”
    – Those be fightin’ words…….

  • Those are fighting words. Hopefully they fight, why not. Morrell has a belt and he is not scared of Benavidez. It’s up to Benavidez to see what happens. Who cares if morrell has under 10 fights When you call someone’s family a disgrace, you have to resolve that. Benavidez said he wanted to fight Caleb plant because of all the trash talk. No difference here.

  • Morrell simply riding on the confidence train. Big talk to promote himself for a possible bigger pay day and a touch of reality facing a real puncher who can equalize the playing field.

  • To his credit, Morrel has been calling out Benavidez for a while now. The amount of fights he has is irrelevant, due to the fact that he has a belt. Didn’t Loma fight for a title in like his second pro fight? Benavidez wants that Canelo “payday”, so Morrel isn’t on his list of priorities. I’ve been hearing that Canelo is fighting Charlo in September. Is this just heresay?

    • @DMV Agreed. Can’t imagine that Morrell is somebody that Team Benavidez sees as a priority right now, not with the Canelo lottery still in play. As much as I’d like to see it, not sure Morrell would be a great business move for Benavidez at the moment. And yes, it looks like Canelo is looking to fight either Jermall Charlo or Badou Jack in September…

  • Presuming Canelo isn’t fighting either one of them next, they’re each other’s best options imo. Not too many people have seemed eager to fight Benavidez and, after how he looked against Derevyanchenko (and the fact that he’s probably still a middleweight), I’m not too interested in Munguia – Benavidez either – though it would be fun for a few rounds. Benavidez – Morrell works for me!

  • Benavidez vs Munguia would be a good fight but Munguia is well protected so that wont happen. However a Benavidez Vs Morrell fight would be good also and then we’d get to see how good Morrell really is.

  • Benavidez is a coward ..this is an easy fight to make..munguai has been winning due to size advantages so at 168 he’ll just be soft and slower than usual and dlh is trying to make a buck befire he is figured out ..Morrell is the favorite in my book..

  • If this is true, then what a disappointment. It seems Team Benavidez caught the same virus a Team Canelo

  • I agree with Benavidez, Morrell doesn’t have an impressive resume yet, all these name calling, I’m sure he wasn’t as harsh criticizing the Castro Regime.

  • Morrell is just talking in a manner in which he should to get notarized and build hype for his image and self to increase and grow a following once yhat is accomplished he just needs to keep winning and the future will be rewarded with great paydays, Benavidez been through that already so now he seeks big fight through strategic matchmaking
Benavidez vs Munguia is far more lucrative than going up against Morrell
Benavidez vs Munguia in September would do amazing numbers
I would like to see a matchup between Boo Boo and Morrell that seem possible winner will definitely raise his stock quickly

  • Apparently Cubans love to trash talk, just like Puerto Ricans. Reminds me of Casamayor when he fought JM Marquez. Talked a lot of crap and got knocked OUT.

  • I am still waiting for a HUGE Texas fight (168 only) between Canelo/Benavidez…stop dancing and fight.

  • Benavidez , here is your precious opportunity to earn your shot at Camelo! Don’t get scared now u clown! LoL

  • Even though Morrell has that phony belt, he has 9 fights against mediocre opposition. He honestly doesn’t deserve a fight against Benavidez yet. He needs to step up his caliber of competition and keep his mouth shut. If he does that, big fights will come. No doubt that he’s talented. But pay your dues.

  • The best way of going for broke is what Morrell is doing, calling Benavidez, but something doesn’t fit in here, why Morrell is not applying the same treatment to Canelo Alvarez? Canelo is a bigger fish and has a missing chip on his belt collections, the WBA version Morrell has, so why not to taunt Canelo that has more to offer? Weird, really weird

  • Benavidez will not take a high risk low gain fight in morrell! It would be an interesting fight if by any miracle, it happens!

  • I guess since Canelo is now going to fight Charlo, then Benavidez doesn’t have any excuse not to fight Morrell. Benavidez can’t wait on Canelo forever. Morrell is the consensus number three guy at 168 so Benavidez has to fight him, or move up to 175 to take on either Bivol or Beterbiev (assuming he gets past Callum Smith which he should).

  • Nice. From what I see, they fight similarly. If Benavidez isn’t real we will find out.

  • This fight is doable. Both are house fighters and nothing solid has been set for their next fight (I think). Stylistically, it should work. Morrell will switch to a counter style halfway through the fight with Benavides overwhelming him late for a stoppage win.

  • Morel only has 9 fights. Why would Benavidez even fight him within the next two years.
