In his long-awaited USA debut, unbeaten WBO #1 rated junior middleweight Tim Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over 2012 U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha (22-3-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gausha dropped Tszyu with a right hand in round one. After that, Tszyu, the son of ring legend Kostya Tszyu, took over, mostly pummeling Gausha on the ropes for the rest of the way. Scores were 114-113, 116-111, 115-112.

In a clash between unbeaten lightweights, WBA #2 rated Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera (23-0, 14 KOs) outboxed Joseph “Blessed Hands” Adorno (14-1-2, 12 KOs) over ten rounds. Scores were 97-93 3x.

Super lightweight contender Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodríguez (13-1-1, 12 KOs) scored a seventh round KO over Juan José Velasco (23-3, 14 KOs). Rodriguez dropped Velasco three times in round seven to end it. Time was 2:49.

  • Rivera vs. Adorno involved two (2) solid fighters, but Adorno was not active enough to get around/through the boxing stick.

I am not sure who is next for Rivera because 135 is occupied with championship fights. Maybe Rivera can later take a look at the winners of Davis/Romero and Kambosos/Haney. I personally have no problems with Zepeda vs. Rivera.

I believe Rivera looks more like Trinidad than Ali.

    • I agree, he does look more like Trinidad. I also think he looks a bit like Julian Jackson as well. Zepeda would be just fine, I think more likely would be Cruz – Rivera, if Cruz beats Gamboa (and he will).

    • I saw some Tito in him aswell, but he 100% looks like Julias Jackson. Can fight the kid.

  • Timmy got sloppy in the first round and paid the price. But good to see he came back strong, hard to land clean punches up top on a fighter like Terrell with that high guard but boy he punished the body. Good perfomance but I think he needs another couple solid tests before taking on the champs

  • I think im finally a believer in Tim Tszyu. I’ve been very skeptical but he’s passed each test. This was a string show against a good fighter.

    • Timmy is too easy to hit for Charlo and gets stopped, in six rds. He needs about four bouts before calling out the big dogs.

      • My thoughts as well gets stopped by Charlo different level in fact if that had happened with Charlo he would not have seen round 3 that said he is still learning and should continue to face top opposition he is not ready for castano or charlo he has plenty of time

  • What fight were the ” judges ” looking at ? Tsyu lost the 1 round and won the rest hands down. I can’t believe one of them had Tsyu winning only by an incredible 1 point…1 point ! Terrell was a punching bag for 11 rounds. This so-called judge should be disqualified. What is his name ?

  • Borikua boxing is a very ugly boxing school they run too much I don’t know how thought he won they fight Ali put pressure all the time

I finally believe on Tim tzuyu he is not just a son of legend but he is a real boxing prospect

  • Welcome to America Tim. If a light puncher dropped him imagine a hitter. Once the silver spoon is taken away you know what they’re made of. The kid won’t go far. He’ll Win a weak title but that’s it.

    • Yea, ridiculous. One point difference is terrible judging. Should be an enquiry.

      • Did anyone not see it 11-1? There weren’t but a couple of even close rounds. I mean, it’s 116-111 at the absolute closest- giving every close round to Gausha

  • Gausha is one tough dude! He will be pissin and spitting blood for a few weeks after that beatdown and never went down cleanly. Great opponent for Tim and a great performance from Tim! That defence from gausha was mad but so to was his ability to absorb all them shots. Seems like a good dude too! Thanks for a great fight guys! Onward and upward Tim!

  • Except for the 1st round knockdown, Tszyu dominated the fight. I don’t know what the judge rendering the 114-113 score was watching but Tszyu won at least 9 or 10 of the rounds. Steve Farhood had the scorecard that was most reflective of the fight I watched.

That said, he did a lot of things wrong in this fight. He didn’t use his jab to set up his punches. He didn’t move his head, and hence was open for the counter right hand. He also tended to square up at times when he had Gausha on the ropes and got hit counters as a result. He should probably have gone to the body a lot more early, but he finally mixed in those body shots as the fight went on. These are all flaws that he needs to correct before he faces someone like Jermell Charlo.

He’s still young enough to correct these flaws. He’s heavy-handed but doesn’t load up on his shots. That’s a good thing. He mixed in light setup punches with shots delivered with bad intentions. Varying the intensity of his punches is a real skill that many punchers have not yet mastered.

I see a bright future and a championship for Tszyu if he continues to stay active and improve with every fight. Great win for him but there’s much more to come.

  • Tim didn’t seem himself in the dressing rooms, pacing around. No grand dad for the first time might have had an effect. Was a very nervous start and the knockdown seemed to get him going.

If the World Title is next Gausha and Inoue would be the best sparring partners, stop either one of them in the gym and he will stop Charlo or Castano. Find a way to end the tough fights.

  • Welcome, Tim Tszyu (Tim)!!

Tim is a solidly built fighter with nice, snapping offensive skills (with pop). After the flash canvas taste, Tim’s chin held in good shape. As another step up fight (in USA) beyond Gausha, I want to see Tim fight an opponent with a more creative offense, faster hands and a slicker defense.

So far, I am impressed with Tim.

  • Tzyu passed the test but not with flying colours.. We all knew he was going to win obviously.. The champs at this weight classes are on another level..

  • Tzsyu did have a brief scare in the opening stanza, but he almost got screwed by the NABE. Judges literally screw up every single important fight in this sport. Tim lacks patience but is a true fighter with the will to win, and the offense to do so. I’m with a lot of the other posters on here thinking that Tzsyu should steer clear of Charlo and possibly Castano too. I would actually like to see how Tim does against Erickson Lubin. A fight against Tony Harrison would be very interesting as well because he can box, and he can punch too. Tim will eventually be a world champion because he has the tangibles and intangibles to do so, but with Charlo in the division holding 3/4 of undisputed I don’t think that’s going to happen right away.

  • Tim had no head movement and flat fleet and was dropped by a pillow fisted fighter, No way he is ready for the Champions. Needs to improve a lot.
    Charlo in 2!

  • I like Tim a lot BUT he has a problem. A BIG one. He leaves his chin in the air like his dad did but worse. Not sure if it’s fixable because he’s has had it from day one. In Australia sparring against foes you beat easily has a cost. Shame.

  • This comment will probably will be removed but I have to make it. Adorno’s boxing trunks had a very vulgar word in the back at the waist. on the side he had the flag of Puerto Rico. This should have not been allowed. I am from Puerto Rico and I was totally ashamed. Usually I root for any Puertorican boxer, not last night.

    • Bill White, I couldn’t believe it when I saw it either. At first I figured it meant something different than what I know that word for, but reading your post now I see that may not be the case. Unless it may mean something different in his area. Who knows, I just know I would never agree to have that word on my wardrobe for national tv.

  • Tzsyu was simply too strong for the counterpunching Gausha. He passed this test, but I still think Charles Conwell is the best prospect in the division. Also an Olympian from Cleveland like Gausha, but what sets Conwell apart from the pack is his one-punch KO power. Would love to see a Conwell vs. Tzsyu matchup!

  • In all the fights i have watch with Gausha, he always come over ( to me) as a very good sparring partner type, a gym fighter, lacking in what it takes to get him to the absolute top. Ya can see that after he dropped his guy, there was no ambition there, to follow up. This reminds me of Campbell against Garcia after dropping him.
