In a terrific clash for the WBC interim super welterweight title, undefeated 6’6 Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (19-0-1, 13 KOs) scored an impressive ninth round TKO over Erickson “Hammer” Lubin (24-2, 17 KOs) on Saturday night in the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. As expected, it was a total slugfest. Fundora dropped Lubin in round two. Lubin dropped Fundora in round seven. The fight was stopped by Lubin’s corner after the ninth round due to the punishment Lubin was taking. Lubin was ahead on all three cards at the time of the stoppage.

Lubin X Fundora

“I think this was probably my best performance ever,” said Fundora. “It was a back-and-forth fight. He really brought his hammer but I decided to bring my drill. The uppercut was landing like no other. The uppercut is my lucky punch. I’m here in Vegas, so I feel a little lucky, and that’s my lucky punch. It lands most of the time with everybody. Southpaw. Right hand. It doesn’t matter. Once I find that, I feel like the job’s done.”

Former WBC super welterweight world champion Tony “Superbad” Harrison (29-3-1, 21 KOs) outboxed Sergio Garcia (33-2, 14 KOs) over ten rounds in a WBC eliminator. Scores were 98-92, 100-90, 100-90 as Harrison took a unanimous decision.

Unbeaten super welterweight Kevin Salgado (14-0-1, 9 KOs) and Bryant “Goodfella” Perrella (17-3-2, 14 KOs) battled to a workmanlike ten round draw. Scores were 97-93 Perrellaa, 96-94 Salgado, 95-95.

  • Great slugfest, he has a decent set of whiskers on him Fundora. The old commentators curse, “he can’t get hurt” went down not long after

  • Great fight! Non stop action on both sides! El flaco fundora is now ready to take on the major leaguers!

  • A good fight for Fundora.

Fundora got off the canvas and maintained his composure to resume a game plan of throwing uppercut grenades. Fundora always displayed pressure, inside fighting and uppercuts. However, tonight, Fundora displayed more maturity by tightening his jabs and hooks. Will the boxing world ever solve, “The Fundora Code?”

As for Lubin, Cunningham made a smart, life saving move by stopping the fight because Lubin’s facial structure did not look right; and Lubin was taking far too many uppercuts. During inside fighting, Lubin kept his elbows far too wide, and he remains susceptible to inside uppercuts. I do not recall Cunningham ever instructing Lubin to correct his habit of not tightening his elbows, to minimize inside uppercut damage.

  • Great action fight. I did not have Lubin winning that fight before the stoppage! Fundora reminds me of a Paul Williams. I will never know why he doesn’t use his height and reach. I like the kid but I can see him getting KO’d like the Williams – Martinez fight.

    • Very good comparison Tyrone, Funrosa does not use his incredible height and reach advantage. Anyway is his style and he is still winning. Towering Inferno will be a huge problem for anyone. And finally, for me Sebas was ahead in the cards by one or two points

  • Hell of a fight!

I’ll admit, I was wrong. I didn’t think Fundora had a chance in the world!

He proved that he’s not only a dog, but also, a force to be reckoned with!

    Incredible back and forth action!

The heart and determination of Lubin cannot be overlooked. What a warrior! Both guys dug deep and gave it their all! I was on the edge of my seat the whole fight!

Great stoppage by Coach Cunningham. Lubin was ready to die last night if they left it up to him! I felt bad for him because he worked so hard to climb back up the rankings after his first loss. Boxing is such an unforgiving sport. One loss and they immediately take you off the shelf!

Fundora is an animal, bro! Who woulda thought that lanky, nerdy looking kid, was actually a monster behind those glasses and choir boy smile!
    Sheesh…….NOW I KNOW!

Never judge a book by its cover. Muscles don’t win fights. Skills, nuts and guts do!!!

They stole the show! Fight of the night, and so far, fight of the year!

I take my hat off to Lubin and wish him a speedy recovery. I hope this loss doesn’t deter him from his goals and dreams in the sport.

    The fans won!

    • Um Lubin that good. You see what Charlo did to him. So Fundora beating Lubin proves little.

      • “So Fundora beating Lubin proves little.”
        Education time for you:
        – Fundora proved that he is / will be a force in Boxing.
        – Lubin proved / showed outstanding courage and a strong will. He was losing the 1st two minutes of the round that he knocked down Fundora.
        – Have a little compassion, Harry Sachs.
        – Take care.

  • -I didn’t see the fight.
    BUT
What the heck man – the article said that “Lubin” was ahead on the cards at the time of the stoppage (?). I’d though that he got pummeled ‍♂️

    • It was a very good, all-action fight, you should check out a replay if you can.
I was completely baffled by the scoring myself. I just saw no way Lubin could be ahead in this fight. I mean, yes they traded knockdowns, but overall, Fundora was winning more rounds. You can’t always judge who’s winning a fight on the condition of their faces, but in this one you could. It was competitive, as I had it 5-3 for Fundora after 8, but for all 3 judges and Steve Farhood scoring it for Lubin, no way.

    • Ricky, I felt Fundora should have been ahead, but it was close in some rounds. However, Lubin’s face was DESTROYED!!! Nose was badly broken and his cheek looked so swollen that I’m thinking either his jaw was broken or his cheek bone. Lubin’s guts can not be understated, but his corner did the right thing for him.

  • Who would’ve thought? A 6’6″ Cuban-Mexican, inside-fighting junior middleweight is the most exciting fighter today!

  • Excellent fight.. I didn’t have Lubin winning but it doesn’t matter. His face was a mess.. good job by his corner because he wasn’t going to quit. Tony Harrison fight I found painful to watch.. he did not impress and remains in the bottom half of the top 10 jr middle weights. Salgado lucky to get a draw

  • I just wonder how the foot shorter Brian Castano would do against the Towering Inferno? Would he even be able to reach his head? And could you imagine a Floyd vs. Fundora matchup?

  • Fundora is a good fighter…He is a problem for anyone…He just beat Lubin…another good fighter..Not only did Fundora beat Lubin ….Fundora beat Lubin up…sent a message….Fundora has a unique set of skills… unorthodox..in that he is a tall fighter that loves to engage on the inside…exceptional uppercut based on his height and leverage….

Has to work on defense though….Showed some ring smarts by taking an eight count after being hurt…showed heart by coming back…that hesitation uppercut is a beast….using his height…leverage for power…

Kinda of Hearns like with his height…power…and desire to end the fight early….Don’t get paid for overtime in boxing….

  • I thought Lubin was going to win this fight, but absolutely full credit to Fundora. He won it and won it in the same way he usually fights. I still think it’s going to get in trouble one day, almost did on this day, but until then, I think he’s going to beat a few people who he’s expected to lose against. Charlo fights Castano and I don’t know how the mandatories go after that with Tszyu and Madrimov – Soro winner, but on paper, give me Fundora – Castano!

  • Why is there a WBC interim when the Real WBC champion is active? He we got with this belt BS again

  • Great fight, great stoppage by the corner and Fundora seems like a really nice respectful kid

  • Wow!!!!! What a fight! Hats off to both fighters, especially Erickson Lubin! He fought as valiantly and courageous as anyone I’ve ever seen. The amount of punishment he took was scary. I think the fight should’ve been stopped the round before! I hope this isn’t a career changing fight/beat down. As for the clowns which tossed ice at Cunningham for stopping the fight, all I can say is that it’s easy to be brave on someone else’s body! That kid was on the verge of being taken out in a body bag and all for what??!! Fondura is real. Damn!!

    • Was security able to apprehend the idiot who threw the ice? Hope they caught it on tape & identify the jackass!

      • Since the ice came from so close (Ringside), I’m guessing it was one of Lubin’s friends / family.

  • this was a great and a great difficult call by Lubins coach but his fighter will get to fight again so i tip my hat to you sir, and its not like he was losing just wasnt his night or really just he took too any shots and to the jackass fan that throw the ice get them banned from boxing dont need that classless BS

  • Great win for Fundora. Was he perfect? Absolutely not. He is going to need someone more experienced than his dad to take him to the next level. Someone to help him go from D to E to F so to speak. He is a freak of nature, who can win titles from Jr. Mid to Heavyweight. Yes, Heavyweight.

Jr Mid – Mid – Super Mid – Light Heavy – Cruiserweight – Bridgerweight – Heavyweight.

  • It’s a nightmare to fight such a big guy at this weight class ! It’s like a welterweight fighting a slim heavyweight lol !

  • I never knew Fundora’s sister also boxes. I wonder if she fights with the same aggressive style?

  • Fundora deserves all the credit for this win, but in this bout, I saw weaknesses in his style, afterall someone who is as tall as he should not have been hit at much as he did ( the knock down in the last round gives proof to this ) Fundora has this game plan of getting in close and wanting to “mix-it-up” with his opponent. Also noticeable, was that when he does, he has his head on his opponent’s shoulder, putting his head in harm’s way. I’ve always been under the impression that a taller fighter should utilize his long jab, trying to set up his power shot, usually a right or left hook. But, Fundora goes right in there from the start and throws beautiful combinations and uppercuts ( truely a thing of beauty to watch ) but a deadly game to play if you have an opponent who has both speed and power ( as was done resulting in his knockdown in the last round ). Fundora may want to consider changing that if he has any future plans fighting Charlo, Munguia or Canelo… OVERALL, I was very impressed with both fighters and I, for one, would love to see a rematch . I think Lubin learned alot through this fight, showing a lot of heart, skills and power.

  • I agree with Tony Harrison,Lublin should retire. After a beating like that.he’s fair game for a boxer puncher. I applaud him for his heart and courage
