New date set for Golovkin-Murata

The fight is back on! Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) is bringing the Big Drama Show and his IBF world title belt to Japan, where he will face WBA middleweight kingpin Ryōta Murata (16-2, 13 KOs) in a long-awaited title unification fight.

The new date is April 9 after the original date of December 29 was postponed due to the Omicron outbreak. It will be streamed live from Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, located just outside of Tokyo, exclusively on DAZN.

A couple of notes: 1) The day before the fight is Golovkin’s 40th birthday. 2) The telecast will air at approximately 7AM ET, 4AM PT in the United States.

  • So if Golovkin wins this (very probable) and Canelo defeats Bivol (no guarantee) then can we finally get Canelo vs Golovkin III in September? It will be three years later and 8 pounds heavier than it should have been but better late than never. I predict Canelo wins both fights by decision and solidifies his number one pound-for-pound ranking.

  • I have absolut no intrest in Canelo vs GGG III.

We all know how that fight will end. The only chance GGG has is a KO victory and that will not happen at the age of fading 40.

No one will allow GGG to win, which became clear after the first fight. It’s just a way to milk money out of something that really has no sporting value.

The difference between Canelo and GGG today is probably greater than the difference between Bivol and Murata.

Canelo is on top and there is hardly anyone who can defeat him today. Definitely not an older and fading GGG.

Canelo needs true challenges. GGG needs to stay healthy.

    • Good comments probably just a last money grab for Golovkin. Should have done this right after 2nd fight when he had more keft

  • It’ll be a year and four months out for a 40 year old GGG and the last time Murata fought was a year before the last time Golovkin did. So he just turned 36 and hasn’t had a fight in almost two and a half years. I have no idea what happens in this fight.

  • Why I’m sobbing right now lol !
GGG should win this one but not in impressive fashion because it’s difficult to shine in front of Murata !

  • The Big Drama Show should be cancelled. Was fun a few years ago but too old and inactive now

  • kingpin with 18 fights? fighting a guy with 43 pro fights! please…..

  • Basically WHEN GGG wins and when Canelo wins, he will move down in weight to dust off GGG and be a two-division unified champion. Canelo is going for immortality.
