Kambosos trying to get Haney Sr in

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Undisputed IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC Franchise lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos has reached out on the behalf of Bill Haney, who is still trying to obtain a visa to travel to Australia to train his son WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney. Kambosos and Haney collide for the undisputed world title on June 5 (June 4 in the USA) at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

“Unfortunately, that’s the situation. That’s not my fault,” Kambosos Jr. told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I’m not the prime minister of Australia. I’ve actually reached out to a few high-profile people who have connections in the government to try to help the situation. I know there will be a whole lot of excuses once I destroy Devin Haney – about the father, about the trainer, about the jet lag, about everything – I’ve been trying my best to see if he can get in but, unfortunately, that’s not my problem. I’ve got all of my team here and I’m ready to fight!”

  • You should be called “Gentleman George Ferocious Kambosos”
    Good onya mate,a true champ!!

  • Haney Sr has a hefty criminal record, Good luck trying to smuggle him in.
    Australian Boarder control in 2!

  • Kambosos likes to blow a lot of smoke. Kambosos simply on a confidence train ride since beating Lopez. Comparing Lopez’s style to Haney’s style are two different animals in my book. Haney has good lateral movement, decent counter punching skills, and good speed to offset Kambosos’ awkward style of moving backwards and trying to counter with his anemic hook when pressured. Kambosos, like Haney, both have much to prove before they make themselves really marketable in the game.

    • Scooby,
This comment may incorrectly appear to come from my wife, Laurie. Our computer account is simply set-up that way. HOWEVER, I’m Rick (Kaletsky)– been watching fights since B&W in the late 1950s. I’d like to tell everyone on the site about a book I wrote (and very recently updated): “Ali and Me: Through the Ropes.” Ali called the original “the greatest book about me in the world!” I have a blurb that explains about the book (and what is unusual about it), testimonials (you’ll recognize most of the names), and how to buy it from me. [Copies on the web are old, used, not updated, etc… and generally much more expensive than getting it directly from me!] I’d appreciate if you would kindly email me at [email protected] or (better yet) please call me in Connecticut at 203/393-1233. In any case, it would be nice to chat. I chose you as my first contact (among the commenters), as you seem to most consistently make the most sense in your analyses… and without the over-the-top BS language, political comments, and disparaging remarks about guys who are simply trying to make a living in a dangerous sport.

Pardon my ignorance, but I’m not sure if I can attach the book blurb in my comments:

      Thanks. Rick

    • George beating Lopez eclipses anything that Haney has done thus far. That’s a fact.

  • Jeff Mayweather said it best. Haney will not win in Australia. He doesn’t have a knockout push despite having a higher KO ration that Kambosos. He can fight the perfect fight but has no shot of winning unless he can hit the button. Have Joel Judah as a trainer might be an upgrade actually.

  • Kambosos not going in just to go 12!and look for a gift decision. If the punch stats come out looking close in a 12 round fight, maybe a draw, maybe a Kambosos win. Haney has to know he has to have a better work rate, a better punch connect. Anyway, you can’t say things are against Haney on jet lag. He should show up 18 to 21 days before fight time. He can blame himself if showing up within 10 days of the fight.

  • If it’s one conviction 30 years ago they need to let it go. Plus I sure Kambosos wants no excuses if he gets lucky and win the fight.

    • The US legal system is not so forgiving when it depends on level and type of felonies. Some states and even federal levels can define felonies as violent and non-violent making them hard to remove from one’s record. Expungement [if legally given] is some cases may remove a felony from a record so an employer, landlord, etc. can offer a job or place to live minimizing judgment. However, federal law enforcement can see the charges to protect ownership from weapons, etc. A pardon is rare unless you have some influences on the political side of the fence.

  • Kambosos deserves a bit more credit at this stage at least he proved he can win a war not to mention a fight of the year type fight against a proven dangerous opponent
Volume and intensity from GK and the fact that he fights to the level of his opponant wins this one imo

    • I will admit, Kambosos fought his a$$ off to beat Lopez. Kambosos was working overtime to seal the victory.

  • This is Kambosis’ chance at either..Fame , or infamy. He loses poorly and he is a nub. He wins and he is King of Australia.

  • Haney will win more rounds than Kambosos no matter who is in his corner. so, Haney easy or Kambosos by robery.

  • Haney is so confident he made every concession to get this fight so good on him. My guess is if he knew his dad wouldn’t be allowed in the country at the time they were negotiating he still would have signed. That’s how bad he wants the fight. If he doesn’t win very convincingly he will not get the decision down under. He needs to try and stop Kambosos but I doubt he can.

  • Haney will be fine with or without his father. I just hopes he tried to stop Kambosos or literally out class him
