Jorge Linares retires

Former three-division world champion Jorge “Golden Boy” Linares, 38, announced his retirement from boxing, after his unanimous decision loss against Jack Catterall, in Liverpool, England. Linares (47-9, 29 KOs) logged his fourth consecutive loss and sixth in his last 10 fights.

During his 21 years in professional boxing, he won the World Boxing Council featherweight championship, the WBA super featherweight championship, and the WBC lightweight championship.

Jorge Linares: “This was my last fight, I told my team, I told my wife, my family, that if I lost this fight, I would retire. So I lost and I’m leaving boxing. That’s why I’m very happy as I have accomplished so much. I told my team that it was a beautiful fight. Finishing today by decision was a victory for me.”

  • “Finishing today by decision was a victory for me” Sounds like Linares was already done.
Not happy to read that Linares didnt plan on winning this fight when he had so many fans pulling for him. But good for him to get another payday.

    • Where did you get that conclusion from? It was a caveat emptor for all viewers given his recent record coming into this fight.

    • Didn’t get that…NJ Boxing…even his opponent knew Linares was trying to win that is why Caterrall played it safe… Linares did press the fight.. reflexes just not there…and that is ok…many wars and age will do that…think you misunderstood Linares..this was a gauge fight…just to see where he is … believe Linares understand that his defensive skills are diminishing….made a decision…I respect that

      • Never said he didnt try to fight and make an event out of it. Of course, he’s a proud fighter and not gonna just lay down.
Im thinking you guys misunderstood me actually.
Im just going off what Linares said. When your happy to go the distance in a loss, it means you weren’t much confident to win. It would make better sense if Caterrall was a top fighter. Not the case here. Linares would not have gone the distance.
We need to comprehend what is written and leave the emotion out to understand.

        • Understand your position… sometimes a fighter have to face himself….for example…George Foreman….did he beat Briggs yes…did he get the decision…no…what George realized was that all the fighters George would face thereafter would not stand and trade… foolish to do that…George also realized that he could not cut the ring off anymore….every fighter thereafter would just “pot shot” George and run….to a decision….therefore George just retired..George had to face himself….Here Linares did the same…Nothing wrong with a fighter..being honest with himself..wish more wouls..
.not emotional…might be wrong …that is just my opinion…and in America …you have a right to be wrong…

  • Great career and a hell of a run. Belts in 3 divisions is not an easy feat. Linares had great skills and never sucked anyone. At his peak, his combos were smooth as silk and he knew how to take advantage of every millimeter up close. At 38 with his marbles intact, it’s best to leave on your own terms. I hope that he has financially secured his future and changed his family’s tree from here on.

  • I don’t know why linares did not go further in boxing??? He has great skills

I lost money on him in his first loss against a Mexican fighter I can’t remember his name but I never thought linares could loss against him

Anyway …lunares will be remember a good good boxer

    • Hear we go again…He did plenty my man. He’ll eventually be in the HOF. Look, he held a title(s) for over a decade from 2007 to 2018 thats over 10 years! BTW The fighter your refering to is Juan Carlos Salgado.

  • Are we doing this again, Carlos? Again, three-weight world champion, four world title belts. He went far. Not Mayweather or Pacquiao far but he went far. It just sounds like you’re biased against Linares for costing you money. Get over it, man. Good on Linares for retiring with his faculties intact and I hope he doesn’t attempt a comeback if/when he gets the itch to fight again.

    • Im not saying he did not do well he made a very good career in boxing but according to his boxing skills I think he could or should go further in boxing

Or in other words I think he does not have the recognition that he deserves

  • At his absolute best, Linares was a fantastic fighter. Seriously had one of the greatest offensive arsenals I’ve ever seen and he made the most of it, 4x world champion in three weight classes. He most certainly won’t get on the first ballot, but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if, someday down the line, he actually made the Hall Of Fame. There’re less talented, less accomplished guys in there than he.

    • Excellent takes…Lucie…Peter…Linares was unique in that he had excellent speed inside…Peter stated it well …”every millimeter up close” ..Linares would lull you into range…and bang… that inside speed .. combinations… was phenomenal…unique…as Lucie alluded to ..made the most of what he had…Linares,.,thanks…now share the memories with your family..your fans….teach the next generation the discipline.,,..Congrats.,well done

  • He took on some the more elite quality competition over the course of his career and pushed his opponents to the limit. A true boxing champ and class act. Thanks for the memories Jorge!

  • Linares that is a name I haven’t heard in a while. He was a solid fighter. The itch will always be there but hopefully, his plan to retire didn’t just come after the loss. Hopefully he has something that keep him occupied (business venture, family etc)

  • Linares knew his career was made at 135, and had bad luck at 140 and vs Mexican fighters. Catterall isn’t a puncher, but every now and then he throws a good one (that he didn’t even expect to be a good one) and stuns people. He floored Josh Taylor. So Linares recovered in the 5th and went 12 rounds. Since 2016, most of Linares wins have been by decision. Linares was 7-5 (2 KOs) since 2016 going into the Catterall fight (though beating Haney or Lomachenko is a tough task), so he wasn’t probably expecting to win by KO or TKO.

  • He gave his best every time and won either way. Went out a true Champ, tried and realized it was over and called it. Good job and career champ, best wishes….

  • This dude was a tough warrior and a great champion! good to see him retire and avoid unnecessary punishment! Farewell, champ!
