Hearn: Kambosos-Haney still negotiating

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Despite promoter Lou DiBella’s saying that undisputed IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC franchise lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos has moved on from making his initial defense against WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney, Haney’s promoter Eddie Hearn says talks are still ongoing.

“DAZN has been very proactive to try and make the Devin Haney vs. George Kambosos fight,” said Hearn on the DAZN Show. “It’s a fight they want badly, it’s a fight they want to make happen. We’re going back with figures and bits and pieces. I think DAZN is acting like a good middle-man buffer between myself and Lou DiBella rather than Lou losing his rag and me being stubborn. It’s a good model to use where we can all be sensible and see if there are any legs to get it over the line.

“The offers go backward and forwards with DAZN, and I think we have a good shot at it. I think George Kambosos is playing a game, ‘Who’s it going to be?’ but he wants to be the clearcut undisputed, and he can only do that in a fight with Devin Haney.”

  • No one wants to see this fight. In fact, no one wants to watch boring Haney fight. Pillow fisted clown with a safety first style…. Yawn. He should be happy he’s even being considered for the fight. If I were Kambosos I wouldn’t let Haney make a dollar off of me.

  • To be all the way honest, in my opinion, I think George should fight Loma.

Haney is obviously a young and extremely talented fighter, but what has he done in the ring?

Who did “take” that WBC from?

Haney is more hype than anything at this point. His accolades and co-signs sound good, but he hasn’t earned the opportunity to be called undisputed, yet!

One day hopefully he’ll get his turn. It looks like he has what it takes to blossom in the sport, but as of right now, I’m not impressed with his competition, nor am I entertained by the thought of him squaring off with George.

I believe Shakur Stevenson is a bigger threat and would wipe the floor with Haney!

  • Haney was given that belt as a free gift! He didn’t earn it the hard way!

George went into the trenches and spanked Teofimo.

Loma fought in 3 divisions and sought out everyone with a strap!

    They earned that!!!!!!

  • Real talk:

I would pay to see Loma and Kambosos fight. Would be a great matchup.

if Kambosos vs Haney is on espn for free and I’m not busy that day with anything else then i may tune in. I kinda feel like a better use of time would be just watching the highlights later on youtube tho.

  • Haney might as well move up. He’s the WBC champ and CLEARLY these guys don’t want to fight him. Lopez said he’d fight him and got cold feet, Kamboso said he’d fight him and appears to be getting cold feet.

I do appreciate highly skilled fighters. Unless he has bad hands, he needs to at least make his fight a tad bit more desirable. This is probably hurting his overall bottonline.

    • YOU ARE RIGHT KAMBOSOS LOSES TO HANEY OR LOMA/// THING IS HE SAID ON A NATIONAL BROADCAST HE’D FIGHT HANEY AND HE’S BACKING OUT…. KAMBOSOS IS NOT SURE OF HIMSELF AT ALL…. HE’LL BE GOING FOR THE BUCKS… THAT’S THE ONLY REGARD I THINK HE’S DOING GOOD… DOES NOT MATTER HOW HANEY GOT THE TITLE HE HAS IT AND KAMBOSOS WILL NEVER BE UNDISPUTED UNLESS HE FIGHTS HANEY…… AND THIS IS CHIPPER

      • True, he should go for the bang for his buck. Kam know its doesn’t matter which elite he fights, he’s losing regardless.

      • Chip: agreed bro. he will lose to either. Bosos also said he would fight Garcia. Truth be told, I just dont see Kambosos holding those belts very long. His goals were never to be undisputed, it was to someday be world champion. Accomplished, now hes just trying to be set for life, cant blame the kid for that. smart move.

  • There is a probability that if George does not make the fight with Haney now, then any unification will be with someone else post a Lomo fight (assuming that is the alternative chosen by George). Haney is finding it very difficult to make 135 and will be moving up sooner rather than later. OTOH, Lomo will always be available at 135 (as he is already mature and cannot outgrow this weight class). If George wants the Lomo fight in Australia he should take it. The sooner the better for both Lomo & Haney. The sooner a Lomo/Kambosos fight is completed then the (albeit diminishing) chance that Haney can sustain himself to cut to 135 again late 2022 may still remain. Either way, the winner (whether Lomo or Kambosos) will be looking for Haney’s belt next. Ultimately, Stevenson will be the one to win them all whether against Lomo or Kambosos.

    • it would be in Haneys best interest to maintain his current weight. not much of a puncher at 135, I seriously doubt he will be doing any kind of damage at the 140 level. Taylor, Prograis, or even Barrios for that matter will torture this kid. Would even like to see Conor Benn drop weight and beat the breaks off Haney if he moves up

      • Haney simply can’t make 135 much longer. His frame won’t allow it. Whether his punch resistance will be better at 140 remains to be seen. Prograis is not talented at all. Taylor will not be a problem at 140 because he is at an age in which making 140 is becoming unbearable. So he won’t be there to meet Haney. No mature fighter having made good money and being his height will be comfortable living like a spartan to squeeze down to 140 after all these years. He is going up (to 147) not for the competition (or lack thereof at 140) but to allow himself to eat a little more every day and feel better as a person/man. Barrios is nothing. Haney is too fast for him. There will be dangers at 140 but it won’t be Barrios or Prograis or Taylor when Haney arrives.

  • Gk will make Haney fight and probably expose him which is why I want to see that fight
I agree Haney doesn’t probably deserve it as much as Loma but it’s still “the” fight no doubt

  • Lomo? Haney?
the Lomo fight should already be made
    these promoters seem/are very difficult
very tough to make a fight these days lol

  • i know i moved away from any interest in haney fighting kamboses if haney wanted to fight it would happen hell fight for free if he was really fighting for legacy

  • Let’s see: yadda yadda yadda, Kambosos wants none of the smoke, so he turned down the fight.

Reality: Haney prices himself out of the fight and just “negotiated” to stay fresh in people’s minds.
