Edwards retains IBF fly belt, Prograis wins

Sunny

Unbeaten IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (18-0, 4 KOs) outpointed Muhammad Waseem (12-2, 8 KOs) over twelve rounds on Saturday night at the Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Dubai, UAE. Scores were 115-111n, 116-110, 115-111. Waseem had two points deducted in rounds six and seven.

“There was a lot on the line tonight but I didn’t want to just run, run, run, I wanted to mix it up and I felt I won comfortably in the end,” said Edwards afterward.

Prograis

In a WBC super lightweight eliminator, former world champion Regis Prograis (27-1, 23 KOs) stopped Tyrone McKenna (22-3-1, 6 KOs) in round six. Progress dropped McKenna in round two and punished him until the but was halted at 1:40 of the sixth.

“He’s a tough man, I knew he was going to be tough and when I knocked him down, I knew he was going to get up,” Prograis said. “But I stayed calm. He kept pushing forward and so I had to change my game plan and box more. I’ve been world champion before and I will be world champion again.”

Former world champion TJ Doheny (23-3, 17 KOs) scored a second round TKO over Cesar “Corazon” Juarez (27-11, 20 KOs). Quick stoppage.

  • If Taylor is gone, I think Prograis is the best at 140, but he’s 33 and if he really wants to leave a legacy, he has to do some major damage in the next year or two imo. Edwards is better than I gave him credit for being, he has a really smooth style and I think he could give Martinez fits if they fought, but I think Nakatani is going to be the star of that division.

    • I think Nakatani is a bit too big (5’11”) and heavy (lightweight). What about the Ukrainian Artem Dalakian? (:
Seriously, Dalakian is the man at 112. I believe a fight between him and Chocolatito Gonzalez could be a beautiful display of skills

      • You’re thinking of Masayoshi Nakatani Burucho! I’m talking about Junto Nakatani! I agree Dalakian is really good, but you hardly ever see him. He’s been one fight a year for the last few and he’s getting up there as well.

        • Hey Lucie gotta ask do you know who Corey Nakatani is?
Also this card today open scoring for corners only not for tv announcers or live crowd.

          • I didn’t know who Corey Nakatani was, I googled him, but that’s the first I’ve ever heard of him.
They had a card yesterday in the same place, also had open scoring – at least in the Foster – Yaqubov fight.

          • No problem Burucho. You should check out Junto. 5’7 flyweight, has some pop, world champion for a year and a half and he just turned 24. Fights on GGG – Murata card in a few weeks.

    • Lucie I’m watching this card right now…But got to ask who you think won these fights back in the day?
      Ali Jimmy Young
      Ali Norton 123
      Holmes Witherspoon
      Holmes Spinks 12
Leonard Hearns 1 before storage and 2
      Sanchez Castillo
      Jimmy Ellis Quarry?
If USF sees this his opinion as well thx

      • I thought Holmes deserved the win over Witherspoon and I thought Spinks beat Holmes both fights. I think Spinks and Holmes could have fought 10x and the same result would have been all ten fights – Spinks via close decision. Tommy Hearns beat Leonard in the second fight. He just did and the last time I heard Sugar Ray talking about it, he admitted it himself. And I had Norton over Ali in first and third fights I think, but it may be time to go back and watch those. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the complete fights in teh cases of the others, but I’m sure they’re easy to find and maybe I’ll get back to you Johnny.

  • I agree Prograis the best at 140.. interesting potential match ups for him. Maybe Ramirez or possibly he ventures up to 47. If Teofimo does well after his first fight at 40 that would be a good match up.

    • Prograis – Lopez would be a great fight. The WBO has Teo ranked #2, so if Taylor is gone, his next fight could be against Liam Paro for the vacant belt.

  • Regis Prograis should be in championship fights.
an immediate rematch with Taylor should have happened. or it should have at least happened by now. booooo

  • Prograis is good, but no way the best.
Taylor and Catteral are the best at 140.

  • To me Prograis looked a little sluggish and slow. He was loading up with his punches, so they seemed to lack that snap. He may lose to Zepeda.
