After a slow start, Jackson Chauke came back to win the vacant South African flyweight title when he stopped Thabang Ramagole at 2 minutes 54 seconds into the ninth round at a packed Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday afternoon.

The 33-year-old Chauke (17-1-1, 12 KOs) from the Durandt Gym made a slow start through the first six rounds as the younger Ramagole (15-6-1, 10 KOs) proved too fast for the new champion to pile up the points with good left and right combinations.

Even though the ref warned Ramagole from the Orlando Boxing Club to keep his punches up he continued to outbox Chauke in the seventh and eighth rounds, as he proved too slick for the slow-moving Chauke.

However, Chauke came out at the bell for the ninth round to score with some stinging combinations to the head before he dropped Ramagole against the ropes for a count.

Ramagole managed to be the count but soon afterward two left uppercuts sent him down again and when he was dropped for the third time with a chopping right to the head, the referee called the fight off.

JOYI RETAINS WBO AFRICA JUNIOR FLYWEIGHT TITLE

Former IBO and IBF minimumweight champion 35-year-old Nkosinathi Joyi (48.30kg) proved too experienced for South African junior-flyweight champion Nhlanhla Tyirha (48.60kg), and retained his WBO Africa junior-flyweight title with a unanimous 12 round points decision.

Judge Deon Dwarte scored it 116-113 and judges Sithembile Thom and Allen Matakane had it 118-112 and 116-113.

In the battle of southpaws1, the 19-year-old Tyirha came out fast at the opening bell to dominate the slow-moving Joyi.

However, the vastly more experienced Joyi picked up the pace as he pushed forward to outbox Tyirha who tried to get into the fight as he swung wildly at times, but the veteran Joyi proved just too good.

Joyi improved his record to 28-5; 19 and Tyirha’s record dropped to 4-1; 2.

This was a good learning experienced for the young novice Tyirha who definitely has a future in the ring, but he would be well advised to leave the clowning alone and concentrate on his boxing in the ring.

DUMEZWENI WINS WBC SILVER TITLE

Former South African junior-bantamweight champion Athenkosi Dumezweni (52.00kg) won the vacant WBC Silver junior-bantamweight title with a wide unanimous 12 round points decision over Filipino Filipino Jonas Sultan (51.60kg)

In a poor fight with both fighters missing badly throughout the South African won with made margins as judge Eddie Pappoe scored 119-108 and judges John Shipanuka and Christophe Fernandez handed in cards of 119-109 and 117-109.

The southpaw Dumezweni was in control from the opening bell and dropped Sultan who was cut over the right eye, with a swinging left to the jaw in the ninth round to emerge an easy winner after 12 dull rounds.

Dumezweni improved his record 12-2; 8 and Sultan’s record dropped to 15-5; 9.
