Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez was on hand to support his stablemate Julio Cesar Martinez on Saturday night at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California. He was interviewed in the ring just before the main event.

On fighting Dmitry Bivol

I chose Bivol because he’s a good fighter. For me, he’s the best at 175 and he has something to offer me. I just want to make history in my career and I’m going to continue dealing with these guys. [Bivol is] really good. He knows what to do in the ring, he has a lot of experience in the amateurs, he’s been champion for a long time. I know what kind of fighter he is but I really don’t care. I’m in my prime and I have a lot of skills.

On fighting Gennady Golovkin for a third time:

For me, I think [two fights] were enough, but we got this deal and for me it was the best deal. This is personal because he talked a lot of shit about me so he’s gonna pay.

On others who want to fight him:

I’m busy this year, so I’m sorry. They want the payday, but I really don’t understand why they don’t fight each other. They need to fight each other and I’ll fight the winner of all of them. I don’t f**king care.

  • Bivol will beat him easily , but be robbed . Then the GGG fight will dissolve because of fan anger. Canola is a front runner.

    • Quite a bit of Canelo haters on this forum! I find it comical before every Canelo fight that happens, the negative comments about losing and I enjoy coming back on here to make fun of you all. I recall reading comments in the past stating that Canelo would never fight Bivol who is the best at that weight. Now that he is, the comments are Beterbiev is the best and he is avoiding him. Canelo has stopped four of his last six opponents, as a natural middleweight, and out of his weight class. The GGG fights were close, they were not robberies. I thought he lost the first one but rounds were close. I swear there are a bunch of school girl cry babies on this forum. Lololol

      • Fair assessment. Yes, I agree exactly. GGG fights were close I have 1-1. Bivol is the best 175 out there. I agree with Canelo too. Charlo should fight Benavidez and Canelo fights the winner.

        • Why would Benavidez have to fight Charlo? Benavidez beats Lemieux he will become Canelo’s mandatory challenger. Canelo will then be ordered by WBC to defend vs Benavidez or be stripped again

      • @Jgari: I wonder what kind of hammer you have that allows to hit very hard on the nail. Is deplorable how some people prefer to show their ignorance about boxing by making prevail their hate over the sport knowledge. Good comment Jgari

      • I was one of the ones who said Canelo would never fight Bivol where Dmitry had time to prepare, based on many different factors involving Canelo stipulations from previous fights, but I was incorrect. However, I’ve not watered down his brave choice by saying “b-b-but he didn’t fight Beterbiev’ and nobody on here can produce evidence that I did say that. If
Canelo defeats Bivol without suspect judging, then I’ve already said I will elevate him to #1 on my p4p list. I just hope we don’t see another Kovalev type ‘fight’ where this newer Russian pulls his punches and doesn’t show. I’ll know within a couple of rounds if Bivol is taking a dive, or not. I hope this is a clean fight with no shenanigans, I really do, and if Alvarez wins legit then I’ll down a whole bucket of crow and take my ridicule from all of the Canelo fanboys like a man.

        • I believe Canelo decided to face Bivol because was the most lucrative offer, and for the same reason he will never fight Artur Beterbiev. No way in this world Bob Arum would offer Canelo 85M for two fights, ie Joe Smit Jr. and Artur Beterbiev. I don’t believe Canelo is afraid of Beterbiev, he is just picking the best offers at this point

        • Kovalev took a dive for sure. Never opened up, never stepped on the gas. It was so obvious a blind man could see it. Afraid the same will happen here.

      • How is this “comical?” The same thing happened to Floyd. People said Canelo would beat him and made and still make excuses why he was dominated. Canelo is p4p#1 who is the A-side and learned from Floyd from a boxing and business standpoint so do you expect him not to receive the same criticism? That’s comical.

        • It’s comical based on the specific uneducated criticism that haters provide, based on senseless emotions and not valid points!

          • “Senseless emotions” according to who? When you’re the top guy this is what happens. It happens to all of the greats and Canelo is no different. On the other side of the coin are extreme biases causing one not to see valid points of criticism. Canelo is a little bit of everything but he’s earned his spot to call his shots just like Floyd did. He is p4p #1 without question.

      • Jgari. I used to count myself as a hater. I definitely thought he lost the first GGG fight and the second probably should have been a Draw, but after that he seemed more interested in cherry picking paper titles. I called for him to pick a Division and unify. For all the accolades he had never proved he was the best in Class. However, all that changed over his last several fights. Criticize the 168 pound Division all you want, but there is no dispute as to who the best is now. I did want to see him against Benevidez, but if he wants to unify at 175, then Bivol is a great place to start. As good as Benevidez is to watch, Bivol is overall the better boxer. It’s an intriguing fight and I’ll buy it!

And to the remaining haters who might call for Beterbiev…give Canelo time he can’t fight everybody at once.

Lastly, I’m a GGG fan, but there really is no need for a third fight. He’s definitely showing signs of age and Canelo has gotten bigger and better over the last couple years. If they do fight, then I’ll give Canelo a pass based on his busier than any other Champion schedule and understanding that it’s still a business. However, I won’t buy this without a stellar (Don King of the early 90s) undercard.

    • Spoken like a true hater, and when canelo knocks him out or wins a landslide victory, Mr. Haskins will be nowhere to be found.

      • Even if Canelo loses, he still deserves mad props for taking on the best. With all the millions in the bank he can just retire and spend the rest of his life travelling the world in a private jet and playing golf whenever and wherever he pleases.
Instead he’s risking his life taking on the best fighters that are taller and bigger than him because he loves the sport and wants to make history, yet so many boxing fans still despise him.

        WTF??

    • absolute rubbish canelo has proved he is the number 1 fighter whats is it that you want this is a close hard fight and Canelo definitely has the skills to beat Bivol

    • You speak a little truth. I don’t believe Bivol can win a decision even if he outboxed Canelo. Bivol doesn’t have the professional experience to contend with Canelo. Canelo is going to outbox and possibly stop Bivol.

    • Bivol is going to sleep besides you must think your psychic, GGG fight will happen and Canelo is going to put him to sleep as well and it’s Canelo not Canola, PENDEJO.

  • I think Beterbiev is the guy at 175, Bivol would be a close second. Interesting fight this one, looking forward to it. Canelo would be talking shit about GGG if the decisions went the way they should have.. Interesting times ahead.

    • He won’t fight him until Beterbiev is 40 we all know that, like he did with GGG. Canelo choosed Bivol because he’s not a knock out puncher and because he knows judges are going to protect him for losing like in the two GGG fights..

      • I agree GGG won the first fight, but I did have Canelo winning the second fight. I don’t think it’s fair to say Canelo waited till GGG turned 40 to fight him, because Canelo himself said he didn’t care to fight him a third time and moved on. I will say Charlo, Andrade, and the others did wait for GGG to turn old to be interested in fighting him now. Either way Bivol is one of the best at 175, is a legit champion, and has a height and reach advantage over Canelo. Not to mention Bivol is a natural 175 fighter. Canelo is the smaller man coming up. So it is a dangerous fight for Canelo. More dangerous than fighting Charlo or Benavidez.

      • I agree with your Assessment 100%. It’s exactly what I was thinking.

      • rubbish most of the commentary know nothing about fighting canelo is fearless he just testing the waters with Bivol who he can beat.
Beterbiev although more powerful maybe too slow for canelo

        • Against Beterbiev, Canelo would probably fight like he did against Danny Jacobs. Lot of awkward Fury-style head movement at distance. You’re right he is faster, but he absolutely could not afford to risk an exchange because Beterbiev shots look lethal

      • Exactly!! Canelo chose Bivol’s 58% KO ratio instead of Beterbiev’s 100% KO ratio. He knows who’s the dangerous one is at 175 lbs

  • He talks shit and so would you if you were the one robbed ! At 37 years old GGG made you run all over the ring and at 38 he at least draws you..
Teddy Atlas thinks GGG won both, I think GGG won by 2 or 3 rounds the first and draws the second..
GGG is unbeaten and a MW legend..

    • Regis, GGG won both fights. First fight he won easy 2nd fight at best Canelo got a draw. Also Canelo got a gift a against Lara. Canelo a fraud. Wants no part of BETERBIEV BENAVIDEZ OR CHARLO

      • I wouldn’t say Canelo is a fraud but he do tend to get favored in close fights that he should have lost.

        • Yeah agreed, Canelo has enough wins to deserve respect. But it is amazing how a judge’s decision can affect your career. For the last few years on these forums i have very very rarely seen someone think GGG didn’t win the first, yet the result was a draw . It seems to be fashionable now to say Canelo won the second. I only watched it once when it was first broadcast and i did think GGG won at the time who knows? I was pretty drunk haha.

I think what my point is that those judge’s decisions essentially derailed GGG career and legacy. Even if GGG had been given the first result as a win and Canelo came back and took the trilogy 2-1, his legacy would have sealed as a great of the era. With the current results, on paper, it is like he was a total ‘nearly man’

    • Canelo Takes His Career Seriously. Doing What’s Best For Him, His Family, His Legacy, His Country. Good Business Sense. Handles Himself Like A Champion & Professional. Respectful. There Will ALWAYS BE PEOPLE THAT NO MATTER WHO HE FIGHTS. IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH. THIS IS THE BUSINESS OF BOXING. PURO MEXICANO

    • teddy atlas he is the commentator who said that billy joe saunders faked his injury ,
Atlas has no place to say anything about anything if he states that rubbish

  • The first Canelo fight I’ve watched is the one against Cotto’s brother, I was amazed by his skills and became a fan.. After Mayweather schooled him and after Canelo relinquished his MW belt instead of fighting GGG I wasn’t any more. But what he does since in chasing all the weak belt holders to grab a title is a shame..

    • Beterbiev is a weak belt holder? And Canelo think he beat all of the belt holders at 168, right?

      • Do you not know how to read? He said Canelo was chasing all the weak belt holders, so on what planet do you live where it’s evident that Canelo has chased Beterbiev? There are pills for ADHD, so you can calm your mind before putting it in reaction mode.

      • he won’t fight Beterbiev that’s why he choose the very god but light punching Bivol !

    • Regis, u call them “Weak belt holders” but even that makes them 3 or 4 best in the entire division. I think thatbis better than fighting bums like GGG does. His last few fighters didnt belong in there with him. Call them what u want but a belt holder is still a World Champ and to get there, u have too obviously be pretty damn good so stop pointing about opposition.

  • Hater gonna hate,Canelo fights dudes with belts, but nobody is happy with him because he’s Mexican, Mayweather record is bs,Chavez was 89-0 but because he’s Mexican everyone forgot. And the end Mexicans are some of the best fighters in the history of the sport,MEXICAN STYLE

    • Hey Dan, JCC lost a fight earlier on his career, this fight was mysteriously altered from his record. The Pernell Whitaker was a highway robbery. So before you write about JCC I suggest you know his history and record. And yes, thanks for that early loss fight was in Mexico, it was mysterious altered. Only in Mexico!!!! We are in agreement that Mexican style of boxing is appealing and interesting.

    • Canelo isn’t Mexican when have you seen a el blanco like him with red hair in Mexico, where is the azteca blood? I consider canelo Irish, which actually was proven on a DNA test he did.

      • Law, don’t post dumb things, because people will know you’re dumb. Mexican isn’t a race, it’s a culture. You can be a black Mexican (there is actually a large region in the Yucatán with black Mexicans), white Mexican and even Asian Mexican. What you said is like saying everyone in the U.S. looks the same. If you look you will find lots of red haired white skinned Mexicans in Mexico, not unusual.

        • What are you talking about pendejo?! Mexican is a ethnicity, black Mexicans are not ethnic Mexicans you dumb f*CK. Does a Mexican who moves to Nigeria become an ethnic African? Nah they don’t. Jack@ss whiteboy.

          • How old are you Law? 5, 6?
Remember, you’re not talking to your parents. do not come in here thinking you’re at home. respeta mocoso. go wipe your nose.

        • Wrong, it’s a nationality not a culture. If it was a culture then anybody who ‘feels’ mexican could be mexican.

      • So let me get this straight, canelo says he’s Mexican but you say he needs to say Irish because of his dna. But don’t let a US born “Mexican” call himself Mexican because then he hates the US and needs to go back to Mexico. Double standard.

    • Relax brother nobody here is racist against Mexicans. We all respect Chavez and Mayweather too. Boxing is very tribal sometimes. You must be a young University student who thinks everybody is racist.

    • Look at some of the guys he fought during his 89-0 run. You can be 56-0 fight a guy thats 1-0 sorry that doesn’t count.

    • I cannot think of a more privileged ethnic group on the planet, so please put your tiny violin away.

    • Mexican has nothing to do with it. He has a lot of USA fans. Also, since he started to learn English it is only helping him with his US fanbase.

    • What about him? Let him wait his turn, He cannot fight them all at once.

  • I seriously think that Canelo is in his prime right now and that he will beat both of these guys but Berterbiev is a different beast all together. He’s probably the only guy that has the power to knock him out. Canelo (with his wide neck) has a really good Jaw. I really hope they fight in the next 2 years. Berterbiev is 37 but he hasn’t been in a lot of tough battles so he’s not an old 37.

  • Canelo is a first-rate fighter (drugs or no drugs) and a very good liar: This is personal because he talked a lot of shit about me so he’s gonna pay. Ever watch your car odometer roll over to big round number? 10, 000 miles–cool. So Canelo waited till GGG’s age rolled to 40 (coming up in a month or so). As for Gennady, his probably more concerned with the legacy of his retirment funds than with his record. Those who remember his younger days will. Those who don’t. . .who cares.

    • SONNY- by wait, u mean GGG called Canelo out while he was a 154 pound fighter and fought 1 more year at 154 before moving up to fight GGG. Is that what you mean by “making him wait” GGG has a solid habit of fighting smaller fighters. No wander why he always wins in a KO fashion. Thatbhappens when he fights down in weight.

      • Aww Tony, we’re not all new on here and were watching boxing at that time as well. So, why would you think you can get away with lying like that? You’re usually a pretty solid poster, but then go and post some crazy shit sometimes.

    • GGG has the right to talk crap,I would be upset to ,the whole world knows GGG won the first fight and second fight could be a draw, yes canelo finally agreed to fight him again as GGG aged

  • I don’t realy care!!!! I don’t care!!!
I guess thats the first english words he learned and like to use them like he sounds very intellectual. Hahahaa

    • Mongoose, really? Kick someone when they are still learning? Very mature.

  • I will speak for myself….I love watching Canelo’s fight but I hate when I say stuff like Bivol is the best when everybody knows his toughest client is Beterbiev!!!!!

    • It’s kind of funny how Canelo could never satisfy anybody. People were saying why he don’t fight Bivol or any of those other champions at 168. When he does now none of them were any good.

  • So many people hate Canelo. You would think they hate him, because he busted all their girlfriends and wives cheeks lol . Canelo for the most part is a quiet dude who is very respectful. Normally people hate the loud ones that talk trash and say they are the greatest, and call themselves money . They say if you have haters it’s because you are doing something right. Keep doing your thing Canelo. Even if you beat King Kong and Godzilla. They would say “oh but he didn’t fight Mothra”.

  • Hopefully he totally outclass GGG this time so his name won’t be brought up again. And yes these guys don’t ever fight each other but expect to fight the top dog. Gtfoh

  • Without canelo, boxing would be in the dumps, who else is fighting the big names and the champions from other belts, NOBODY! Keep boxing alive canelo!

    • If you’re a casual Canelo groupie who knows nothing about the other players. So, I’ll educate you son.
Usyk, Loma, Inoue, Donaire, Taylor, etc. and Canelo isn’t strictly fighting the ‘big names’
Plant and Saunders were big names? Geez

  • Canelo is an excellent fighter with HOF skills. Canelo has outstanding offensive/defensive rhythms, great chin and can punch like a mule kick. Whether folks like him or hate him, Canelo will easily coast into the HOF.

It appears Canelo plans to fight: 1) Bivol; 2) Beat the living sh*t out of GGG (personal); and 3) Finish up his career by fighting Benavidez (168) or Gilberto Ramirez (175), in mighty Texas. I hope Canelo finishes up his career with a Texas scrap against Benavidez (at 168).

I highly doubt if Charlo (“blah blah”) wants anything to do with Canelo, but I highly doubt if Canelo wants anything to do with a fully functional Beterbiev. Even if Andrade adjusts at 168, he will remain in a dark, damp, cold corner of the boxing world.

If Canelo includes/fights a fully functional Beterbiev on his list of opponents, I would shout…SALUTE CANELO!! (win, lose or draw).

  • Canelo LOST the first fight to GGG, and MAYBE earned a draw in their second fight. Any other fighter in the history of boxing would be eager to fight a third time, but not Canelo. Why? The answer is clear – he KNOWS he didn’t beat GGG. Quite simply, he’s afraid to lose. But he’s willing to take the chance now that GGG will be 40 years old when they do fight a 3rd time, and has obviously lost some speed. And I used to be a big Canelo fan before the GGG fiasco.

  • love boxing but this dazn going ppv now is a no, no, for me i will not sign up again when my year is up. i signed up for dazn to get away from that crap!!!

  • Canelo is a good fighter, just not on the level of Floyd Mayweather. He’s careful who he fights, and when. With that said, I’d rather read about actual fights and boxing history rather than read about speculation and opinion on fights that either haven’t happened yet or never will happen.

  • I like what Canelo is doing since he left Oscar. Excited for the Bivol fight. Bivol is no push over and wildest Canelo. Excited for the 3rd fight with GGG. Even though GGG will likely lose due to his inactivity and age, but it will be a good fight while it lasts.

  • CANELO your of product of steroids cherry picking and corrupt judging. You should be ashamed of the way you conduct your business.

    • You hit the nail right in the head! Canelo was caught cheating with steroids, he got some gifts from bad judges in a couple of his fights, and he did seem to wait for father time to catch up with those great fighters of the past before he elected to fight them. Plus one fighter at least -Jacobs – did not seem to fight Canelo with any urgency. You can interpret that any way you want.

  • Canelo is right. Bivol is the best out of all opponents. Andrade, Charlo, Benevidez, Beterbiev, Smith would all lose to Bivol. And stop trying to fight Canelo to the others. If you want make a great fight to setup a super fight. Stop this marinating.

  • Canelo sounds like a little Brat bitch in this. Like other fighters have to get the honor of fighting him. You are supposed to fight the best period. It don’t matter if you are the cash cow in a weak era of boxing. And GGG won both fights

  • Canelo is growing on me and made a fair point. A lot of fighters at 160-168 calling out Canelo and yet they don’t fight each other. Fight each other first and Canelo may fight the winner. Canelo fights more than all of them combined. They talk Canelo fights. Who would have ever thought Canelo at 147 or 155 would be fighting at LH? In addition to, Fury and a potential showdown between Crawford vs Spence, Canelo is the best thing going in boxing today.

  • He should not fight a Russian. Russians should not be allowed to fight or hold boxing titles as long as Russia is invading Ukraine.

    • Rich. You dumb prick. It doesn’t even take shiny things to get most people’s attention these days. Ukraine invasion? Wow, hook, line, and sinker. Next you will tell us the side effects the FDA released about Pfizer vaccines are bs. Oh wait…is that why they’re telling us about the Ukraine as if it’s not the most corrupt place on earth? Wake up dude.

  • Canelo isn’t lying though with everybody needs to fight each other. Andrade will probably be 100-0 before he retires at 40 fighting the top 10-20 opponents SMH

  • Canelo is one of the biggest “Draws” in boxing now. He has never backed down from a Leggett fighter. He’s in my humble opinion one of the best fighters I’ve had the pleasure of following. In the ring he is respectful, and usually takes time to sign autographs, and selfis. Like him or not he is the real deal.

  • You are very very worried. And if it’s up to you that fight will never happen.

  • I don’t dislike Canelo. I actually like him the more he shows his personality. Having said that.. I don’t think Bivol is the best in the class. Beterbiev is for sure the monster of the division.

  • I like all these guys but I wouldn’t write off Golovkin the way I see alot of people here doing.

    • ggg has been so inactive and has struggled if he loses to Murata say goodbye to his lotto ticket trilogy with cashman Canelo and you know if he does squeek by Muarata he will have to move up to 168 to fight for his 401k retirement fight lol

  • I am Hispanic/ full Latino, but that its not the reason why I should say something nice about Canelo. Mr Saul Alvares Barragan, it’s the best boxer for only 3 reason that no other boxer got. 1) He is very intelligent. 2) he is very strong. 3) he is super fast and tricky to strike any boxer.
For his nick name Canelo and he was teased in school at his young times making him mad at it, it remindes me how other boys were bulling me, and I wanted to revenge somehow like becoming a boxer and take care of my anger and I couldn’t because, unfortunately at age 6 months old I lost my left arm from suffering Poliomyelitis, therefore, young boys in school took advantage at me, I couldn’t do anything to fix my anger. I admire Mr Canelo he not only revenge from his anger but now he is a professional with great career as a boxer. Canelo, I will meet you sometime in person then we talk if you may give me the opportunity. And by the way, even on one good arm I can take care of your beautiful horses in Guadalajara, amen. God bless you my brother.

  • i gonna say this one last time……in the 1st fight Canelo simply outboxed ggg if that would have been Mayflower the scores would have been 120-108 then because abel sanchez tried to call him out for not fighting like a true mexican Canelo comes out stands his ground backs up ggg forcing him to box so not to get KOd yet we still are talking about this? Canelo won both fights so lets move he unlike all other so called elite champions has consistently been fighting other “current” world champions in their “prime” without a “catchweight” clause and he has improved overall as a fighter now Bivol has not had a KO in his last 5 or 6 fights or basically at the championship level and i do believe hes been dropped before so i think Canelo will either stop him late or win a UD then he will and i mean he will KO ggg at 168lbs oh and just jog a few memories so many fans claimed they bet big big money that ggg would KO the then smaller Canelo well he had 24 rounds to do so and what happened…………………………………….

  • I used to be a Canelo doubter, but fights like this prove to me how confident and courageous he is. This is the first true test at 175 (minus a washed up Kovelev) that he will face. Bivol is alot bigger and alot stronger than Canelo… this is an amazing fight and props to both fighters for giving us.. the fans finally something worthwhile to watch.
