Bivol calls out Canelo again

WBA light heavyweight world champion Dmitry Bivol, (17-0, 11 KOs), has once again called for the opportunity to drop one weight class and battle ‘pound-for-pound’ and super middleweight world champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, (53-1-2, 38 KOs), emphasizing that he is ready to fight on the first available date when boxing returns.

“I’ve said now for over a year that I’m ready, willing and able to move down to super middleweight and fight Canelo,” said Bivol. “I have been training throughout the COVID-19 crisis and have watched on social media that Canelo has as well.”

“I know that my team and Golden Boy Promotions have discussed this option and we are willing to make the fight on very reasonable financial terms. My team understands that unlike many other opponents my goal is not the payday but to face the best in boxing today. I know I can beat him and the real rewards will come after this fight.”

Said manager Vadim Bivol, “We are willing to work out a much more reasonable deal than what was paid to Canelo’s recent opponents to make this fight. For Dmitry it’s more about the opportunity to dethrone one of the very best fighters in the world.

“I have heard that DAZN and all other parties involved are supportive of this fight, but whenever the name is brought up to Canelo, he says he would never do it, however I don’t know how much truth there is to this. It would be great to know if he is ready to fight other top champions in his division that are on the same network and are ready to make a simple and appropriate deal as there are not that many of them. I strongly believe that Dmitry Bivol at super middleweight is the toughest test for Canelo.”

  • Everyone knows Canelo dont take these type of challenges. Just wasting your time asking. Canelo wont even fight his mandatory when its ordered. He wants a soft and unfocused Saunders to fight with.

    • NJ, well said. Your statement sums it up nicely. Oscar will half to weigh-in all the angles to see if his guy will for sure get a victory so the cash winnings keep coming in. This is a financial investment for Oscar that’s for sure.

    • That’s not true. LOL. For one I don’t know anyone in boxing who jumps up several weight classes and challenges the best in the division especially when they’re avoided by others in that weight class. If Loma went up to fight Paq-man and went back down after defeating him nobody with half a brain would slam him for not beating Spence or Crawford. Bivol hasn’t hit the open market yet. He needs a big win. Go to 168 and defeat the best there. Canelo isn’t going to fight anything unless there is a belt attached and fame tagged to it. He is not a natural LH but I feel he’ll progress over time and get there. If Bivol went down beat Callum, Canelo will fight him. Canelo has challenged avoided fighters GGG, Lara, Jacobs, tried Mayweather.

      • Yes, Canelo did try Mayweather and was handed a one-sided defeat. Mayweather put on a clinic in that match up.

        • Wow, earth shattering, current events news once again from scooby doo.

          • Current events is what keeps the world moving and Fightnews is no exception.

          • Scooby doo, you’re right. But you’re still talking about Canelo fighting Mayweather…that’s not current.

        • I was saying that nobody moves up in weight and clears out the best. Not that Kovalev was the best. But knocking him out the way he did was impressive. It’s unfair for haters to say he needs to clean out a division 15lbs over his class.

      • He only fought GGG when he was past his best years. One could see that with his match with Kell Brook. And to suggest that Kovalev was the best in the division for me is a joke. Maybe 4th best at best, and he had just come of a tough fight 3 months earlier. Many also felt that in both fights, especially the first, that Glolovkin should have got the win. Canelo is what we call a cash cow, and often you better knock out that cow if you want to get at least a draw.

        • Once again ignorance can not be ignored. GGG became a champion rather late in his life. Canelo was a puppy fighting the biggest fights he could at 154 including Trout, Lara. It took him time to move up. I do feel GGG won the first one but felt Canelo won the 2nd. To say they are not challenges… are comments made by people who don’t really know what boxing is. Every fight is a challenge. He’s not just fighting low level mandatories. And anyone who challenges anyone looks for weaknesses. I think it’s funny that people think Canelo is strategically waiting for every fighter around him to develop a flaw. Nobody is fighting anyone in big matches around him all waiting to cash in. Everyone was saying Callum was the guy. But he looked bad and now Canelo will be hated for taking that fight.

  • Ejem…….what did you say? No, no……I can hear you…..communication a bit distorted…..maybe the corona is affecting it. Can you give me a call in 2025?

  • I like Canelo, he would never be afraid of Bivol, but his magament, YES!
I like Bivol, but beside not being an attraction, he is dam dangerous that he will be more avoided than the corona is. Sorry brother, nice try, but I don’t think it’s gonna work

    • 11 Ko’s in 17 fights hahaha. He’s a real killer. He gets destroyed at super middleweight by Canelo.

  • this fight won’t happen anywhere in the near future, we all know this

  • Bivol needs to go and fight his mandatory or whoever is next in line for him and then go after the winner of Beterbiev – Meng. You know Canelo isn’t fighting you.

  • Sorry but Dmitry Bivol is a boring fighter, the fight with Canelo would stink. No thanks,

  • Not happening. Canelo only fights, fights he can win, you know, the kind Oscar buys? 😉

  • I’ve never been a fan of a naturally bigger fighter calling out a smaller one. I understand the cash cow aspect though, so when Bivol and his team say it’s not about the money I throw a flag on the play. If it’s about fighting the best, then Bivol should fight Beterbiev.

As for Canelo, please unify a Division…ANY DIVISION…then I’ll entertain moving up. I don’t even care what Division. There are plenty of great fights to be made from 154 up to 175.

  • What on Gods green earth did Bivol ever do to earn a fight with Canelo? Is he good? Yes. Is he top ten pfp? No. Dude, fight at world class, get some top quality under your belt, get a belt at super middleweight then talk.

  • If clemyellow isn’t certain of victory either by fighting a bum or having the judges in his pocket he ain’t having it. His name shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as the other great Mexican champions. Just a cherry picker and a Diva!!!

    • Clemyellow? Are you 12 years old? This is a grown ups only comment section. Shouldn’t you be playing Fortnite or saving the world, Jesus?

  • Bivol may not hit as hard as Beterbiev, but he is a better all-around fighter. He is tough as well. He will give Canelo lots of problems because he can move well, is skilled & puts punches well together and is strong and take shots well. Canelo is a great fighter, but I think Bivol presents too much risk for the reward for Canelo right now. I have a feeling that Bivol will frustrate and beat up Canelo like no one has before. Bivol should fight Callum Smith and beat him first if he wants a shot.

  • Oscar can’t wait till Bivol has lost a step like he did GGG and Kovalev. Bivol and Canelo are both 29.

    • Your comment holds no weight. You end it by saying they’re both 29. Wouldn’t they both lose a step at similar times?

  • Bivol is a good boxer but a bit boring and repetitive at times. Doesn’t have a big name and he will not bring anything to the table when it comes to promoting the fight. Last but not least never been under the bright lights of a big event. Would be a boring fight IMO and Canelo would win it clearly.

  • You know Canelo is going to go silent and pretend like Bivol doesn’t exist. He can’t weight drain or dehydrate clause a victory over the Russian, and there is no way he can outbox him or knock him out. Ginger would also be worried about getting knocked out by the heavy-handed Bivol, or getting outboxed so bad that not even his corrupt judges could help him in front of live eyes. I really don’t see this as a competitive fight because of the way the Russian moves and lets his hands go in counter-punching opportunities. I can see Canelo getting knocked out or hurt bad enough during an exchange that he gets finished off. Bivol is in his prime and is not going to take a pay day dive like another Russian did. These are all the reasons why this fight will never happen.

    • Come on man. This dude is dropping down a weight class but won’t be drained? You’re smarter than that Chris the Natural. It’s all about the money. He may not take a dive but he’s definitely trying to make some money. He doesn’t beat Canelo at Super middle and Canelo isn’t going to fight him at LHW. This the reason he’s calling out the golden goose and saying he’d fight him at super middle. He will never be a big name. He is no ko artist, he’s trying to make some coin and then he can drift away…and end his career being battered by Beterbiev.
