Former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez has commented on losing his world title on the scale. “I’m very disappointed,” he said. “This is obviously my first time missing weight. Just very disappointed to lose the title on the scale, but I’m still going to win the fight tomorrow. I put the blame on myself. It’s just the last three pounds wouldn’t come off.

“Maybe not having the proper things I needed like no sauna. I was only able to go to the gym an hour a day since I got here. It’s just a couple of different things, but I still have a job to do tomorrow. Maybe later the opportunity will present itself, but I still have a fight to win.

“I didn’t think this all the way through. Coming in I thought I would have access to more, but I didn’t. Maybe this is a message to all the other fighters who have a little bit of trouble with their weight. It’s going to be hard to make the weight if you already have trouble.

“If you need a couple extra things like the gym or the sauna, you better come into the bubble already on weight. Because it’s very hard.”

  • I really don’t blame Benavidez for not making weight. He’s always fit and ready and on weight, but seriously with this pandemic and limited gym work, Benavidez definitely gets a pass. Great young man.

    • You don’t blame a professional fighter for getting stripped not once but twice for failing to make weight in the same weight class?. Kid is a LH. He won’t be able to hit this weight without hurting his future health after this fight.

      • I think Callum will be next. Both him and Benavidez need to move up. They can have more fights at 175. Conelo Alvaroids was never going to fight either of them anyway.

  • I will consider it a pass under COVID-19 conditions, but I will keep a close eye on him for 2021 because the COVID-19 defense will become far more restrictive in 2021. David Benavidez really needs to stay away from 175 because it is dangerous up there.

  • Unprofessional! This answers any future questions on why Canelo won’t fight him.

    • Love the thumbs downs on my own comment. This kid has blown it twice now. You don’t get high profile fights by doing things like missing weight unless you move up. He lost his Canelo opp with this one.

  • Hugs ❤️ to Mr. Benavidez. It can be difficult losing weight, I know I have a few extra around my tummy.

    • I think Benadivez is naturally a fat dude. Benavidez, the boxer as we know him, has a lanky, wiry, skeletor looking frame, but in his amateur days, he was a classic endomorph. Weight issues will continue to haunt him throughout his career.

  • This highlights the problem of fighters today draining themselves to make weight. Old school fighters like Willie Pastrano would eat ice cream before fights in order to bulk up to their weight class instead of starving themselves down to a lower one. Benavides should be fighting at light heavyweight, anyway, since super middleweight is a fake division.

    • As are all these junior and super divisions that were added only to get sanctioning fees for more meaningless “titles.” Go back to eight weight classes, and you will not have fighters trying to squeeze into unnatural weight classes.

  • The weight classes should be 0 to 100 pounds — scrawny division.100 to 150 pounds —peewee herman division. 150 TO 200 pounds is light division. 200 to 250 pounds is whoop ass division. 250 to 300 pounds is run to mamma division. 300 pounds plus is philly hoagie with extra mayo division.

  • Fighters need to start fighting closer to their natural weight. This man is a light heavy, and he should go fight as a light heavy. He wouldn’t have lost his title twice on the scale had he been fighting as a light heavy. David is a stellar talent, but I appears that it is time to move up in weight class.
