Florida’s most prominent boxing promoter Tuto Zabala Jr. has announced that he has secured not one, but two venues to host the WBO junior flyweight world championship title bout in the fall, between current world champion Elwin “La Pulga” Soto (19-1, 13 KOs) of Mexico and #1 mandatory challenger Jonathan “La Bomba” Gonzalez (24-3, 14 KOs), from Puerto Rico.
Although negotiations are currently underway, Zabala does not want to waste time if negotiations do not pan out and the WBO calls for purse bids. Therefore, two host cities have been secured. The first one is San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Kissimmee, Florida is plan B.
“Puerto Rico has not had an open to the public boxing event since the initial start of the pandemic. Although it will be close to a year-and-a-half, what better way to kick off the opening of venues than a world title fight in Puerto Rico for the fans to enjoy LIVE championship boxing?” said Tuto Zabala, Jr.
Puerto Rico is a hotbed for boxing. Governor Pedro Pierluisi has opened venues to full capacity. In addition, the population has adhered to the vaccine recommendation, and between 60 to 70% of the island’s population is vaccinated.
