Top Rank inks Haney

WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney has reportedly dropped Matchroom/DAZN and signed on to a multi-fight co-promotional pact with Top Rank and DiBella Entertainment. This means ESPN, which is aligned with Top Rank, will air Haney’s June 5 showdown with undisputed champion George Kambosos in Melbourne, Australia. The Kambosos-Haney deal includes a rematch clause for Kambosos should he lose.

    • Yes…he pushed and got him to Jo Jo Diaz fight. I am surprised he would leave Hearn.

  • It seems like never actually signing with a promoter worked out for Haney. He has to win the fight obviously for it to work out completely, but even if he doesn’t, he’s 23 and figures to have a big future ahead of him. You know they’re already thinking about undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney vs Lomachenko and Stevenson.

    • Other then it being in Australia this is a great opportunity for Haney. I honestly thought Kambosos lost to Selby and Haney is a more talented boxer then Selby. Yes I think Haney has a suspect chin but Kambosos does not have a high KO%. If Haney stays focused and fights his fight he should win. This is an opportunity he cannot afford to pass on. I read even Hearn understands that. I feel Lopez was way too overconfident and did not fight the fight he should have against Kambosos. That is why Kambosos is champ. I give Kambosos credit but I believe Lopez would have beaten him if his own ego did not get in his way. I maybe wrong but I am not yet sold that Kambosos is all that much better then we all originally thought. Maybe he is just tougher both mentally and physically but will lose when he meets another A list fighter that fights the right fight.

      • I expect Haney to win this fight too Pete. I don’t think Haney beats Lomachenko, unless he waits him out and Loma loses a bit and I don’t think he beats Stevenson under any circumstances. But if he does go to Australia and beats Kambosos as a 23 year old… and then does it again! And is undisputed lightweight champion – yep, too good to pass up, even now.

        • I agree Lucy ..Stevenson is a potential Mayweather/Whitaker level of talent. Loma is still exceptional and I think even revitalised. Davis,Garcia, and Lopez are all brutal punchers who could expose the chin of Haney at some point in a 12 round fight. Kambosos I do not believe any of what I described above. If Haney wins he he becomes “the man” and is in a great bargaining position when he fights anyone I mentioned above. Being that he is not as exciting being the recognised champion would be the equaliser. Despite my comments…I want to be clear I have nothing but respect for Kambosos. Anyone who rises to the occasion like he did deserves massive respect. I just do not believe he has the natural talent of the A listers. Therefore I think he will lose when he fights an A lister who focuses on winning rounds as opposed to just expecting things to happen like Lopez did. But maybe he proves me wrong. One thing I believe is that Kambosos will come and give his best.

          • Yeah Lopez was going to “expose” Haney’s chin which is why he avoided him in the first place.

      • Pete i think you were spot on. Kambosos is the type of fighter that wins a fight they are not suppose to and everyone jumps on the band wagon then steps into a big fight and is a bust. Gets a big rep for beating an A side fighter that for whatever reason is not at their best that night.

  • Haney and his advisers really believe in him. I’d like to see George school him but I think it will be Haney convincingly possibly by stoppage. Haney is due for his breakout performance and Kambosis will not back down which will be his undoing. But I hope I’m wrong

  • Haney is good but he can’t crack an egg. Kambosos will destroy Haney inside the distance.

    • Foolish assessment. Pernell Whitaker by come “can’t crack an egg” but he was highly skilled. Since when did punching power equate to how effective a boxer is. Kambosos don’t believe he will “destroy Haney inside the distance.” He doesn’t even believe he will win.

  • With all the crap Eddie Hearn talks about Arum, Bob got the better of him here! What this sets up is a fight versus Loma once the dust clears and Top Rank has Stevenson and goofy Teo Lopez @40 should anyone of them move up

  • Exactly the same move Crawford should have done with PBC instead of resigning with TopRank (dumb move). In those days were fresh and available Dany Garcia, Porter, Thurman, Spence and so on. Now Haney has on hand a bunch of great fights at 135 or 140 (Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, Jose Ramirez, Teofimo Lopez).Assuming he would beat Kambosos, beside rematching him, he will have plenty of options ( good move).

  • Has matchroom/DAZN ever done a show in Australia? Old Bob has been there and done that, so maybe that made it easier to get the fight done

  • The only thing that should be booked for Haney is a ticket out of town before George taps dat ass.
