Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) of Victorville, CA and Jamestown, Ghana’s Emmanuel “The Gameboy” Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs) hosted their kickoff press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles at Golden Boy Headquarters. Both were on hand to discuss their upcoming 12-round, lightweight battle on April 9. The fight is set to take place at San Antonio’s Alamodome, live, worldwide on DAZN.

Ryan Garcia: “I am definitely not looking past him, whether people think he is a good contender or not, and I respect him and I know this will be a good fight…if it’s a quick or a long fight, I am ready for whatever.”

Emmanuel Tagoe: “I know people don’t know me, but after this fight, people are going to ask, who is this guy!? I know Ryan Garcia, I respect him a lot as a good boxer but he is not my style.”

  • These Ghana guys are tough but can’t really fight, with the exception being Nelson. His success led to overhyping of his compatriots, who have been basically outclassed when they reach this level. Easy fight for Ryan. Hope he fights a top 5 guy next.

    • Mostly correct. Hard to argue with.

I would add Ike Quartey, Agbeko,Konadu was good too…

Too a lesser extent Kofi Jantuah and josh clottey.

Their accuracy and timing is what some of those guys great punchers. Thats largely a result of physical ability as opposed to boxing technique.

This is an interesting fight. Not sure what to expect but Im guess Garcia will win pretty easily.

    • Salut! MR. Willis, when you wrote “but, can’t really fight “you probably forgot Ike Quartey, one of my favorite, but I woud say that he was not” lucky” with his fights in North-America…..Again,Salut!! pete bell.

      • Yes Quartey was an excellent fighter. I did overlook him. Thought he was from Uganda. My bad. I still wouldn’t put him in the same class as Nelson, but he is definitely the second best. B+ fighter for sure. Great fights with Oscar and a very underrated Jose Luis Lopez.

    • Ghana has produced some of the best fighters out of Africa, such as Quartey, Clotey, Commey etc..
You cannot compare Ghana to Mexico or the US but time to time they deliver one who is becoming a world champion. And don’t forget the tools and money to become a great fighter isn’t there, so they do it in their own ways. And I give them props for that..

  • I know the fight is in April, but “beware the ides of March”. I have seen so many debunked so far, that one more won’t surprise me

    • I have the feeling that Garcia lost some confidence after the Campbell fight. Yes he responded well to adversity in the moment and he deserves credit for that. But I wonder if the fact that he was in that difficult situation got in his head. Campbell is a good fighter but no one would mistake him for the second coming of a prime Shane Mosley. So I just wonder if he is wondering”What happens when I go to the next level?” It is one thing to know adversity can happen…it is another thing to experience it. Examples where I have seen this Peter Quillen after Gabe Rosado, Keith Thurman after Shawn Porter, and back a bit further Camacho after Rosario. All were victorious but they seemed to lose some confidence. Boxing not only tests one in the ring I think it test fighters in their thoughts when they are not in the ring. They are human like the rest of us even if they are special. It takes a special person to be able to box..especially at such a high level…but even at that level…when your sense of invincibility gets shaken..even in victory it may cause some self doubt that was not there when everything was going your way. I am curious to see how Garcia will do going forward.

  • Should be a decent scrap these Africans are extremely tough warriors who I have tons of respect for.

I expect Garcia to be taken the distance which will go his way. With that said I hope Garcia never ever dresses up in drag like his promoter used to do. It’s a very sick and dangerous thing to do.

  • Easy win for QueenRy. One thing I’ve noticed about fighters from Ghana throughout the years…. They are not very aggressive, rarely are power punchers, built up records from their homeland and surrounding area, are tough and gritty but never enough to win.

  • Bullishhhh! This drama queen needs to step up to the big dogs! He needs to fight the real top 10’s!

  • Good to see Garcia’s return to the boxing world. I expect a TKO victory for Garcia, and we will wait for his more challenging tasks at 135.

However, first thing first, let’s see if Garcia will display a solid performance in a TKO victory.

  • Alright Ryan! Enough talking and posting already! Time to fight!! Let’s see if this is what you really want to do…..

  • Garcia should win but this could end up looking a little like Dela Hoya vs Quartey.. Bazooka could fight. Oscar said it felt like he was getting hit by bricks. Let’s see if Tagoe can make this into a war.. never know.

  • García is a great great fighter I just want to see him against big names

    Like Haney or shakur

    • “García is a great great fighter..”
      – A little too early in this young fighter’s career to be using that often over-used word in sports.

  • Tagoe , who has beaten no one, looks like a featherweight here compared to Garcia. He was roped in by GB to get knocked out.

  • Good fight for Garcia to come back in the game, due to covid fighters aren’t fighting much.. Garcia by late TKO.
