Interview: Sugar Hill Steward, Adam Kownacki trainer

By Przemek Garczarczyk

When Sugar Hill Steward worked with Charles Martin, he wanted to test Martin against the Polish brawler – Adam Kownacki. Martin fought Adam and lost. “I always admired Adam as a fighter, but I knew he had some things he needs to work on. When we started working together this year in Florida, almost 6 months now, I realized also how great an athlete he is. He will be all that on Saturday because he is having fun boxing again.” Kownacki (20-3, 15 KOs) fights Joe Cusaman (21-4, 19 KOs) on the undercard of Edgar Berlanga vs. Jason Quigley at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night, live worldwide on DAZN.

  • I like Adam but recent fights have been rough. I feel he hit his plateau and is transitioning to journeyman status.

  • Kownacki is making another attempt at climbing the boxing ladder of success. Kownacki’s added weight in his last few fights made him “hittable” since his speed and reflexes were slower. However, now that he has lost this weight, that may help. I do question his ability to take a punch from a heavy hitter as his chin had nothing to do with his weight. One would hope his weight loss will give him an edge in defense to minimize being hit more often. I did notice in Kownacki’s last few fights he had a bad habit of staying out on the end of his opponent’s punching range and struggled to get close to his opponents. Hopefully, he has improved on those mistakes. Someone like Wilder or Fury would give Kownacki problems that’s for sure.

  • he is a shot fighter who depended on his chin. His chin is gone and he could be seriously hurt if he continues to take leather. He was crushed twice by a regular guy recently..

  • Let’s be honest here Kownacki is just not a very good fighter. He wings a lot of punches, has terrible form, terrible defense. Not much in the way of speed or power. His footwork is lacking, doesn’t seem to care about controlling the range or distance. He’s just a tough guy that throws a lot of arm punches he doesn’t even rotate through the punch with his waist most of the time.

His ceiling is limited to being a stepping stone for more talented fighters.

Regardless of what sugar hill says, Kownacki needs to retire before he gets hurt.
