Newly crowned WBC diamond super flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (51-3, 41 KOs) had one request Saturday night after his unanimous decision win against Julio Cesar “Rey” Martinez, (18-2, 14 KOs). Gonzalez wanted to honor his trainer Marcos Caballero with a WBC champion trainer’s belt before he goes back to his native Nicaragua. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman moved fast on this request and brought the belt himself to Los Angeles so Gonzalez’ wish could be fulfilled.

Gonzalez and Team Chocolatito made their way from Coachella, CA to the WBC Headquarters in Torrance, CA Wednesday afternoon to surprise Coach Caballero. The moment “Chocolatito” walked into the office with the WBC Champion Trainer’s belt, Caballero looked surprised and teary-eyed. It was definitely a beautiful moment where Roman got the opportunity to honor his trainer.

“This means so much to me, I didn’t expect it. Thank you Roman Gonzalez, WBC and everyone for this honor!” said Caballero.

Later that day, Roman Gonzalez made his way down the street to The Rock Boxing Gym in Carson, CA where he surprised Amateur Boxers in the community. Gonzalez walked into the gym, all the kids looked shocked to have the living legend in their gym. Chocolatito got a chance to speak to the kids, watch them spar and of course take photos with him.

“I’m grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to visit the great kids. They are are future of Boxing!” stated Chocolatito. “It’s crazy because when I was a kid, we sometimes couldn’t afford food to eat, now I can’t really eat because I have to make weight, the irony of life!”

  • congrats to Chocolatito and his trainer its funny to think if he hadnt lost the 1st fight with Runvasai how would his career been at this point? hes still a great fighter though and i thought despite the early knockdown he still won the 1st fight IMO the powers above wanted to keep him from going 50-0

    • No doubt about it. Especially during those years. It would have taken the luster off of other “accomplishments”.

  • I ever knew they even had a trainer’s belt. That’s actually kinda cool imo.

  • When Roman Gonzalez decides to hang them up he will be missed. His decency and humility are all too rare in boxing.

  • The little master, what a champion he is. Great role model for the young kids at the gym.
Took his losses to Sor like a man and came back to win more titles when people thought he was done

  • Does Caballero have to defend the belt? If so, will it be Gonzalez who trains him?
