Nikita Tszyu pro debut postponed

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

The pro debut of former Australian amateur champion Nikita Tszyu on Wednesday has been postponed because the venue has flooded out. The promoter is looking for another venue hopefully for Thursday.

Nikita Tszyu will compete in the 154-pound division, taking on Aaron Stahl (2-0-1, 0 KOs) in his first paid outing. Nikita’s brother WBO #1 light middleweight Tim Tszyu will be at ringside.

“This kid’s a beast, he’s got this killer instinct in him, he’s super skillful, he’s got all the tools,” Tim Tszyu told the Australian newspaper. “I reckon Nikita bashes Michael Zerafa now.”

In a WBA super featherweight eliminator, unbeaten WBA #5 featherweight Hector Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) moved up a division on two-and-a-half weeks’ notice and dominated WBA #1 rated Chris “Primetime” Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) over twelve rounds on Saturday night from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Garcia was a replacement for WBA champion Roger Gutierrez, who contracted COVID, but he didn’t look like a sub. He beat Colbert to the punch from the get-go. Garcia dropped Colbert in round seven and punished him for the rest of the fight. Scores were 118-109, 118-109, 119-108.

“In the ninth and 10th rounds I hit him so hard,” said Garcia. “I knew I had him. I knew he wasn’t going to be able to box anymore. I want to fight Gutierrez for the world championship I worked too hard to get into this position today.”

Colbert stated that he wants to get a rematch. “Congratulations to Hector and his team. They deserved this win tonight. I wasn’t feeling myself. At the end the day, I’m still ‘Primetime’ on SHOWTIME.”

On a weekend of boxing upsets, this fight was the biggest with Colbert going down in flames as a 33:1 favorite.

Russell, brother of former WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr., brought the fight to the 38-year-old Postal. He rocked Postol in with 29 seconds left in the bout and referee Mike Ortega very quickly waved it off to preserve Russell’s KO streak. Postol complained about the stoppage.

“The performance speaks for itself,” said Russell. “You see (Postol) went the distance with Terence Crawford, and I just stopped him. I believe I’m ready for another step-up fight.”

Postol fought on Saturday with his wife and their twin five-year-old sons back home in Brovary, Ukraine in harm’s way with the Russian military invading the country.

“I don’t think there is any need for a rematch,” said undisputed super lightweight Josh Taylor after his split decision against Jack Catterall. “I won the fight by several rounds. I won in the second half of the fight. I took over and bossed him. He was doing a hell of a lot of holding and spoiling. The ref taking the point off me helped him a little bit, but I still won the fight.

“I started a little slow, but once I grabbed the momentum, I started catching him with the bigger shots. He was trying to spoil a lot. Going down and up a lot and clashing my head. He caught me with a couple of good shots. I’m not gonna lie to you. It wasn’t my best performance. I put a lot of pressure on myself with it being my homecoming. Been three years, first time since lockdown and all that. I put a lot of pressure on myself being the heavy favorite and it showed in the first half of the fight.

The Tokyo high court on Thursday ruled in favor of the plaintiff Kameda brothers (Koki, Daiki and Tomoki) against the defendant Japan Boxing Commission (JBC). The court ordered the JBC to pay the compensation 100,100,000 Japanese yen ($870,435 USD) for their damages caused by the JBC’s punishment in 2014. It was the second trial as both parties appealed against the first trial’s verdict for a compensation 45,000,000 yen ($391,304 USD) to be paid by the JBC. It shockingly became more than a double since the court admitted Kameda brothers’ damages for more than a couple of bouts, not each one fight in 2014.
