Stunner: Kelly defeats WBO #8 Islam

In a huge upset, middleweight Jimmy Kilrain Kelly (26-2, 10 KOs) scored a ten round majority decision over previously unbeaten 20:1 favorite and WBO #8 rated Kanat “QazaQ” Islam (28-1, 22 KOs) on Friday night at the Whitesands Events Center in Plant City, Florida. The 37-year-old, two-time Olympian Islam came out flat and never got untracked as Kelly outboxed him all night. Scores were 95-95, 96-94, 97-93. Kelly picked up the vacant WBO global title.

“I thought I won every round,” said Kelly. “I even hurt my hand and could only box with my jab during the last four rounds. Despite that, I still feel I won every round. I felt his pressure, but I didn’t feel his power. Kanat was looking for the counter all night, but I didn’t let him do it.”

Unbeaten welterweight Peter Dobson (15-0, 9 KOs) scored a one-sided ten round unanimous decision over Jose Miguel Borrego (19-4, 16 KOs). Dobson pressed the action with a heavy body attack all night. Scores were 97-93, 98-92, 100-90.

Super welterweight Jonathan Eniz (28-17-1, 11 KOs), a late sub who was wearing low top tennis shoes, upset local favorite Mark Reyes Jr. (14-2, 12 KOs) by ten round unanimous decision. Eniz dropped Reyes in round two. Reyes was rocked in round nine and almost went down again. Scores were 95-94, 96-93, 96-93.

Rising cruiserweight Najee Lopez (3-0, 3 KOs) destroyed Alex Theran (23-7 15 KOs) in two rounds. Lopez dropped Theran at the end of round one with a body shot. Lopez then stormed out in round two and immediately finished the job. Time was :33.

Welterweight Marques Valle (4-0, 4 KOs) smoked Robbie Rose (1-2, 0 KOs) in 89 seconds. Rose down three times.

Unbeaten lightweight Julio Solis (6-0, 6 KOs) blitzed Trenton Gibson (1-1, 0 KOs), getting three knockdowns in round one to end it after 1:41 of action.

Super featherweight Dominic Valle (3-0, 3 KOs) won by third round KO over Nelson Colon Torres (4-7, 3 KOs). Torres down twice. Time was 1:56.

Unbeaten light heavyweight Matthew Tinker (8-0, 6 KOs) scored a six round unanimous decision over Brandon Maddox (8-5-1, 6 KOs). Tough fight for Tinker, who prevailed 58-56, 58-56, 59-55.

Light heavyweight Casey Dixon won his pro debut by second round KO over Arsenio Hall (3-6, 3 KOs). Body shots finished Hall. Time was :28.

Unbeaten light heavyweight lmran Haddabah (4-0, 4 KOs) won by second round KO over Dominique Wiltz (0-3) Time was 2:39

Welterweight Tommy Wu won his pro debut against Anthony Curtiss (3-15, 2 KOs) via 39-36, 40-36, 40-36 unanimous decision.

  • Kanat looked every day of his 37 years and all of the inactivity didn’t help either. He’s probably never going to get a shot now. Good for Kelly though and all the best to him.
