Authorities in Puerto Rico entered the home of three-time world champion Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gómez on Wednesday afternoon and extracted the 65-year-old former fighter after allegations that he was being abused and kept in deplorable conditions by a woman he is currently involved with.
For many months, the family had no communication or access to Gomez and they got a court order to have him transferred to a hospital. In a live broadcast on Telemundo, the unshaven Gomez didn’t look well as he was taken from the house in a wheelchair and then moved onto a gurney and into an ambulance.
My God what a sad state of affairs! Arguably, The Greatest Junior Featherweight of all time! 17 title defenses all by KO!! Record will never be broken!!
Who are the 3 people that disliked Borimexs comment? Show yourselves and justify your decision to do that. Absolute classless morons. What he said is 100% Correct.
So sad. I remember years ago the same thing happened to the Duration Heavyweight Champ, Jimmy Bivins, who was being kept in deplorable conditions in some filthy attic in Cleveland.
Bazooka deserves better. The boxing Community needs to step up.
This is sad but I’m glad to see he is out of this situation.
Sad to know that, but he always gonna be in my mind as he was in the ring, an unstoppable ko machine. I have no doubt in my mind that he was involved in the most brutal fight ever at 122 vs. Lupe Pintor, a real lion from Mexico, I never get tired to watch such a magnificent fight
Yeah very sad to hear about bazooka gomez problems.great fighter and not only the best super bantamweight of all time but also the hardest puncher in that divisions history.and as for pintor had a great fight with gomez over 14 rounds before being stopped especially coming off a tragic world bantamweight title defence against the late Johnny Owen of my country wales only 2 years earlier.yet the man came over and unveiled Owens statue years later true class.
Yes I remember when Lupe Pintor unveiled the statue! The Ring Magazine did an interview with Lupe within the past 10 years or so. Lupe still mourns Owen and pays great respect to Owen’s family. A real champion.
God bless Bazooka. Hope he gets the help he deserves. I feel boxing history hasn’t been appreciative enough of Gomez. His upswt loss to Sanchez is really held against hime. I remember years ago a boxing writer, i think bruce shaddick, argued against Gomez being in the HOF.
Bazook a brilliant boxer with goat power. A very underrated defensive fighter with precision punches. Destroyed Zarate won a war against Pintor. Champ in multiple weights. Awesome fighter.
God bless the greatest Jr. feather weight of all time the bazooka will always be remembered
Benitez Gomez the late Chapo Rosario all end of in a living hell.
Hopefully this b.. is send to jail !
The man’s a legend he don’t deserve that!!!
That is very sad to hear. That your “caretaker” would be taking advantage of you. I hope that he now can have only people around him who treat him well. It is a disgrace to hear of any opportunist mistreating the elderly (or abusing anyone). It’s doubly evil if that person is masquerading as the “significant other”. Hope you get well Bazooka!
They live broadcast this stuff? That’s cheap.
God Bless Wilfredo.
And this is why Mayweather is revered by true boxing historians. Hit and not be hit is the definition of boxing. All the fans that were screaming for him and other that fight and show how tough they are when he and others was going toe to toe weren’t there to take care of him once he was injured.
Old enough to remember Marciano ( the real Rocky) this Canelo reminds me of the unbeatens… In my opinion and only, no one measures up to Canelo. No one, period!!
Not fair, and completely uncalled for. This happens on more occasions than we realize, especially as some boxers get up in age and the wars start to catch up with them. In comes a Wolf in sheep’s clothing to cheat, steal and destroy just like John 10:10.
I pray that Gomez recovers well. Not only the greatest junior featherweight ever, but one of the greatest of all times.
My heart goes out to Wilfredo Gomez and his family. I’ll never forget watching him on Wide World of Sports back in the day. I hope he is taken good care of and mabey recover from his illness. Whomever he was living with probably also needs help too. Prayers for him and his family
