Weston-Montoya clash Oct 27 in Auburn, WA

By Ricardo Ibarra

The Washington state based Pacific Northwest Professional Boxing Promotions will stage their one and only card of 2018 at the Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington, on Saturday, October 27th. A stacked ten bout card is on tap with a number of promising young fighters from around the region scheduled to see action.

Headlining the show will be surging Tacoma cruiserweight Marquice “Tree” Weston (14-1-1, 8 KOs), taking on Joey Montoya (9-5-3, 3 KOs), of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Weston is looking to add his seventh consecutive win since suffering his lone pro defeat two years ago. The rangy 6’7” fighter is riding a two-fight knockout streak in 2018 and hoping to add a third. He scored a fourth round TKO over Wilfrido Leal in his last fight this past May.

The stocky 6’2” Montoya is hoping to break a recent stretch of bad luck which has left him with three straight decision losses, although every one of those losses came against undefeated fighters. His last effort came against Donald Cobb on September 3rd, when he lost an eight round unanimous decision. Weston and Montoya will meet in an eight round bout contested at the cruiserweight limit.

The semi-main event will feature undefeated Jr. middleweight Steven “Hands of Gold” Villalobos (10-0-1, 8 KOs), going after his fifth win of the year against McAllen, Texas’ Randy Fuentes (7-5-1, 1 KO). Villalobos put on a thoroughly dominant performance in his last fight, claiming a shutout decision victory over Lionel Jimenez on August 25th in Portland. In Fuentes’ last outing, he scored a seventh round TKO against Kenton Sippio Cook in July. The two will battle in a six round match-up at 154 lbs.

In an intriguing six round featherweight bout that has the potential to steal the show, Seattle’s Rob Diezel (12-7, 4 KOs) will square off with Kalispell, Montana’s Kenny Guzman (4-2, 1 KO). Diezel, a slick mover who can bang when needed, is currently on a three-fight win streak, although he hasn’t fought since June of last year when he defeated Phillip Adyaka by decision. Guzman, perhaps best remembered for his unsuccessful challenge of former Olympian Michael Conlan last year, is hoping to get back in the win column after losing two of his last three fights. In his most recent bout this past February, he was stopped in the third by Ricardo Lucio Galvan.

Making up the remainder of the card will be unbeaten Tacoma Jr. middleweight Nicholas Jefferson (6-0, 4 KOs) squaring off with California’s Jose Leon (7-3-1, 6 KOs) in a six rounder; Cris Reyes (4-0, 3 KOs) taking on the pro debuting William Parra-Smith in a four round lightweight bout; John Peak (2-0, 1 KO) taking on Chaz Jordan—an MMA pro who is making his professional boxing debut—in a four round light heavyweight contest; Greg Cruz (2-1-1,) facing off with Juan Huerta (1-0) over four rounds at 130 lbs.; welterweight Chris Johnson (1-0, 1 KO) battling Andres Garcia-Abarca (1-0) in a four round welterweight tilt; Taylor Shirley and Alejandro Alvarez both making their pro debuts against each other in a cruiserweight clash; and finally former amateur standout Britney Simms making her pro debut against an opponent to be determined.
