Unbeaten middleweight Jaime Munguia and D’Mitrius “Big Meech” Ballard commented on their fight on Saturday night in Tijuana won by Munguia via third round stoppage.

Jaime Munguia: “It was a dream of mine to fight here in from of the people that saw me grow up and develop as a fighter. We came well prepared for this fight and my performance today proved it. I knew that I was going to be the one to apply pressure and I went in there and did my job. D’Mitrius did have some power. That surprised me, but after the second round, Erik Morales advised me to apply more pressure, throw more combinations. It paid off, I dropped him with a good liver shot and decided to just go for it and ended the fight.”

D’Mitrius Ballard: “I felt I prepared well for Munguia today, but his power surprised me. I couldn’t find my rhythm and apply my jab. Now we have to go back to the gym, keep working, and figure out what comes next.”

  • Munguia is ready to fight for a belt, give him the opportunity he has earned. Not sure yet about his level but he can give any MW champ a fight that’s for sure..

  • I think, technically, if he continues with the WBC’s little mini tournament, next for him would be Adames. That’s a good fight and I think he beats Adames.

    • Maybe I am crazy and wrong here but to me it seems the stoppages in both the Munguia and Brook fights were a little premature. Maybe I am old school but I think of Pac – Marquez 1 where Marquez was dropped 3 times in the 1st rd and was allowed to continue. Or Jorge Castro stopping John David Jackson after appearing to be on the brink of being stopped. Same with Marquez and his dramatic KO of Pac in fight 4. Look at fights involving Gatti and Ward both with each other and other classics.. Khan while losing did not seem all that hurt when it was stopped. My feed had no commentary and myself and my friend were surprised when it was waved off. I know the writing seemed to be on the wall but I did not feel it there yet. The Munguia fight had a knockdown…yes….but ask yourself…had it been Munguia that was stunned and dropped by Ballard that way do you really think the ref would have waved it off at that point…I honestly would bet no.

      • Your examples of the fighters coming back were fighters with a punch and were capable of coming back. Khan was completely out the fight. Ballard nor Khan had the power or ability to come back. That simple!!! Especially for somebody old school.

        • I Get your point NJ…more on the Khan fight. While it was a little soon for my liking I can see where it was one sided and Khan had not thrown a punch in a significant period of time and did seem capable of hurting Brook the few times he did land. With Munguia- Ballard though…nothing significant happened to that point. Ballard had not taken a beating it was only the 3rd round. It just makes me wonder…Munguia had trouble making weight and was it decided that the fight would be stopped in his favour at the first possible opportunity? Again had the roles been reversed in that situation I highly doubt it would have been stopped. Just for the record I wanted both Brook and Munguia to win. I understand the importance of safety but this is boxing…if safety were the number one concern it would not exist.

      • I agree with you in the case of Ballard. I think he could have continued, but I don’t think the winner of that fight was in question anymore, but he definitely deserves the chance to prove me wrong. I think Khan was done.

      • I was waiting for Khan to start protesting. Like you said the writing was on the wall but way to early in my opinion.

  • I was a little disappointed with Ballard. It was a big opportunity and I felt he didn’t really give it his all. Admittedly, Munguia has improved steadily under Morales, his upper body movement making it hard for Ballard to get his jab connecting. Then Ballard basically fell apart the first time Munguia opened up on him in the third.

    • David. I can certainly tell you’ve never been in the ring, let alone with a heavy handed boxer. It’s so easy to play arm chair warrior and question a boxers will or his mental makeup while relaxing and sipping that beer or glass of wine…

      • That is his opinion…flawed or not ….no need to participate in any sport to have an opinion on what you perceived through an observation

      • Bobby- ur exactly right bud. U can have the best offensive game but once u feel the power of a hard hitter, it makes u think twice. By that time, the opponent jus unloaded a combo. Take Callum vs Canelo for example. Exactly what u were saying.

  • Munguia should fight a photo of Marvin Hagler..it would be close . He is a bum who looked shaky until the guy he was fighting got clubbed. Horrible matchmaking makes a long champion. GGG would toy with Mungy. Make that fight and get rid of this clown. Nuff said.

    • Lol dude really? “Fight a photo of Marvin Hagler”? .. “Ggg would toy with ‘Mungy’? Lol.. please put down that crack pipe already!

Jaime would knock you spark out with a light jab then piss on you..

The corny things people come up with who know absolutely nothing about boxing….

  • We probably all want to see Munguia in a title fight or at least a big fight of some kind.

If you look at the middleweight, he has the age on his side as a 25-year-old. He is the only one who is under 30 of the top 5. There is no top 50 who is younger than Munguia, ie 24 years or younger.

I do not know how he feels about the weight, if he is on his way up a weight class to supermiddle or if he has parked in the middleweight.

I feel hesitant about Carlos Adames, want to see more of Felix Cash and of course there is Zhanibek Alimkhanuly who I have heard a lot about but do not know much about.

In any case, it will be exciting to follow the development.

  • Most of the comments are Mungia’s advisory board. They know best for Mungia having never fought and or travail through their contendership to dominance.

  • Munguia is young an extremely dangerous, he is a working progress, uses the jab an right hand more than before. Keep in mind that he stands a chance to hurt anyone in the Middleweight Division.

  • Its insane how so many praise GGG besides getting beat by canelo which first first he got a gift by having it a draw what has he done? Who did he beat Rosado is a journey man, Lemuix is a C level guy. Who has he beat? He beat Steve Rolls and people were praising him. I mean lets be honest he lost vs Danny Jacobs. He sits around and wait for Canelo smh go fight Mungia, Charlo, Andrade all those 160lbs guys are a bunch of BUMS! They got plenty of names yet they dont fight each other.

    • Damn A.P. that was perfectly put. GGG looks like a tremendous puncher cuz alot of his fights were against 154 lber’s stepping up to fight him. When he fights true middleweights, his power is simply good, not amazing. He chases Canelo crying for a rematch but he shld be rematching D’chenko and Jacobs. Also, hes been callrd out by Charlo and Andrade so maby times its horrible

  • Ballard’s face was pretty marked up by the time the fight was stopped. It was premature. Still if it had been continued Mungia would have been sent him into next week immediately. The TJ crowd would have loved it and Ballard could have ended in ER across the border. I think the ref was right. The crowd was pleased and everyone went home Happy. Make no mistake Jaime Mungia is the real deal. A work in progress. And certainly not a rhinestone. A diamond in the rough.
