John Fury: My son should RETIRE

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Newly crowned WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury should retire after defeating Deontay Wilder in seven rounds at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas according to his father John. “I just want my son to retire now,” John Fury told Good Morning Britain. “He’s done enough. It’s been an uphill battle for him. I think it’s in the back of his mind. He can’t do any more. He’s won every professional title. Enough is enough. There’s more to life now. He’s given it his all. He’s got no more to prove!”

  • Dear John, understanding your concerns, I like to remind you that your son is at the best momen not only in his boxing career (a fresh undefeated world champion) but perhaps of his life and at the door of the biggest payday available in boxing today (above Canelo) if the fight vs. Joshua materialize. I believe that retiring now could be a dumb decision, maybe after Joshua, but just maybe.

    • He knows his son well. He knows he has a history of screwing up and possibly relapsing and hitting rock bottom again. I expect Fury to let his supporters down again, after celebrating high achievement. Fury will always let his fans down after his biggest feats.

      • NJ, after Kiltschko, yes, but he rebound it with an amazing performance against Wilder with a debatable draw and then, even though with two so so performance, he shocked the world with the astonishing dismantling of Wilder in merely 7 rounds. Did he let his fan down after his best performance in his post Klitscko era?
        Lets hope for the best.

      • Based on what, what he did after Klitschko? it was one time in his whole career but you are making it sound like he has a habit of going MIA after a big win. You’re one of these Twitter types who comes off like an expert, while sounding like a bitter loser who is always proven wrong.

      • No he won’t, “cause he is a new man. You are just pissed off because he kicked your boy’s @
; Wilder, behind, in a very humiliating fashion. Heis unstopable at this moment.

  • Looks like an excuse to get out of a real fight to me. Wilder was a terrible boxer, with no balance. Klitschko didn’t even try to fight back. He knows AJ will be better than both of those, put together, and is looking to sit on the glory, like he did when he beat Klitschko.Defend the title man!

    • Totally agree. People don’t realize that Wlad was in hesitation mode just like Bute was against Froch and most of his fights after his devastating loss including the Jean Pascal fight. All those dislikes, man, but you and I know what we are talking about. No hate, dang, I was rooting and I’ll be rooting for Fury for all his fights whoever he fights, but real things need to be expressed for Christ’s sake. And with all the skills that he has, Fury shouldn’t be afraid of Joshua at all. Even if wilder had big flaws, he was still a threat to Fury. Fury got the job done, and he may get the job done vs Joshua as well. We want the fight.

    • Agreed, Wilder is a terrible fighter that’s overhyped with his best victory against an old Ortiz. Fury beat a past his prime Klitschko, other than that who has Fury beaten? Nobody. Joshua by far has the best resume, yet I think AJ isn’t the same fighter after the Andy lost. With that said the Heavyweight division is really weak right now.

  • Tyson Fury might be the best heavyweight since Ali. He should fight for three more years….

  • Most parents would want to protect their children especially when something they do involves a high profile status (ie, professional boxing). We don’t know the inner circle of the Fury family and the struggles, concerns, and heartaches they go thru. We as parents sometimes see our children in a different light of the world than the spectators around us. Boxing is a hard business with many ups/downs even for the champions. Fury has dealt with his own demons for years based on tabloids. He is human and makes mistakes like of us and maybe his father does not want to see him calculate or add more.

  • It’s hard to disagree with a father saying that son should stop taking punches. Any fighter that has earned enough to be set for life should retire and live their best life, if thats what they choose.

But… from a pure boxing standpoint, I disagreed that Tyson should retire, or that he’s accomplished everything. I love watching the guy fight and was pulling for him all the way against Wilder. That said, after he beat Klitschko, he went away for three years. I know the story, which is an amazing tale of triumph and perseverance, being at rock bottom and working tour way back to the top. Still, not to minimize anything he’s accomplished, but Fury’s legacy will be determined over the next few years. He’s already a HOFer, but the next few fights will decide if he’s another Riddick Bowe, or if he’s elevated to the next level of Holyfield, Lewis, Foreman, etc.. Or, maybe things line up and he leapfrogs those fighters and takes a seat next to Louis and Ali.
Fury has an opportunity to be considered as an all time great. As a boxing fan, I hope he’s able to continue forward and provide us all with the legendary fights that will be talked about for all times.

  • I disagree with what he says here. Tyson will better suit himself if he keeps on fighting. If he retires, he will then have too much free time on his hands to get complacent, get out of shape again, fall into a deep depression, and then do something that might hurt himself. He is still young, can handle himself well in the ring, and boxing fills that void inside him. I think Tyson should keep working out, training, staying in shape, physically and mentally, take a few fights each year until he is about 33-35, then get out. And maybe after that, he could become a trainer or a manager.

  • It looks like his father dont want him to face Anthony Joshua cause it maybe too much for him thats why he wants his son too retire!! Anthony Joshua has quick hands

  • Well First Mr. John Fury, there is a rematch Clausul. A contract is a contract and Tyson did “get the WBC chance twice from Wilder ..So dont you think fair enough with a third ? Secondly a win or loose in the third, there is still a Joshua , so much more to prove….. and last fair enough one win against Klitzko and one win against wilder , but besides that…”nothing”. Finally big respect for saturdays performance. …He look good and surprized by rising his level after Schwarts and Wallin.

  • He’ll beat Joshua and everyone else.Too tall, too skillful for anyone right now. He should do 3 more fights, make a ton of money, invest it and ride off into the sunset.

  • He did beat 2 top dogs at different times and is also undefeated so he’s proved he’s the best in this era. AJ getting ko’ed and fighting a non exciting rematch takes him out as a must fight opponent. But if Wilder is shot and he can repeat with no damage. That could be an easy 25 mil. AJ would be an easy match for Fury I think. He’s so slow. Look at Joshua’s fight with Klitchsko than look at Fury’s. I realize that styles make fights but there is something to that. That could be an easy 50mil if Hearn is willing to put up the money. That could be an easy 100+ mil retirement. But Tyson has always talked about retiring early. I hope he sticks around for a couple more.

  • Here we go again after Fury wins the big fight wins a title becomes the #1 Heavyweight in the world and retirement talks start just like when he beat WK. We all know what happened after that.

  • I don’t think Fury would turn down a 2nd rematch with Wilder if Wilder goes for it. He might, as he definitely has his own mind but I think he will take that fight. Also, defeating Joshua would clearly cement a legacy for him. I think that matters to him. After that, retirement makes sense.

  • Excellent advice. It’s called the Peter Principle, quit while you’re ahead. Because sooner or later, someone will beat you.

  • Now is the time he needs to stay busy and fight AnthonyJosuah And do the rematch with Wilder. His Dad is a complete nut case. Not the person anyone should listen to for advice. That is why he went to prison for ripping another Gypsy’s nose.

  • John Fury,

This advice is better suited for Deontay Wilder. Not Tyson Fury. Your son has other fights ahead of him.
AJ – Daniel Dubois – Dillian Whyte – Joseph Parker – Oleksandr Usyk – Michael Hunter Jr – Filip Hrgovic – Tony Yoka – and a few others.

Tyson can fight for the next 6 years, and cement his name as one of the top 5 of all time.

For Deontay, I have one word for him. #RETIRE.
Retire Deontay. Johnny loves you, but good night, Deontay, well it’s time to go.

  • Hearn and Joshua better hurry up and make a deal and not screw around trying to nickel-and-dime Fury. The heavyweight division is now run by the gypsy King, and he is the A side when it comes to negotiations in a fight with AJ. If Eddie and AJ can recognize this, then they will not be responsible for botching this fight. If they do, then big John is right and Tyson should call it a day. I would like to see the Gypsy King take on and defeat Joshua because it will leave no stone unturned in this loaded heavyweight era. He would have had beaten both the old guard in Wladimir Klitschko as well as the new blood in Wilder and Joshua. It would seal GOAT status for Fury and bypass Lennox Lewis as the greatest British fighter who ever lived, because Tyson would retire on top and undefeated having beaten everyone possible.

  • He is close to doing what needs to be done. We need it to happen. 3 words: “UNIFY,.. THEN BYE-BYE”

  • Amazing less than a week ago Wilder was praised as the most devastating puncher in HW history, favored by most to KO Fury and now he is relegated as a 2nd tier bum because he lost. Don’t forget Joshua got destroyed by Ruiz jr., Lewis got knocked out by Rachman, Tyson by Douglas, Joe Louis was beaten up by Schmelling, and Wlad Klitschko was waylaid by Brewster and Corrie Sanders yet each and everyone came back from those defeats and regained their form and went on to become regarded as all time greats. Joshua is yet to be determined but did regain his versions of the ABC titles. Wilder’s final chapter has yet to be written after all it was but not more than a year ago people were saying the same things about Joshua.

  • Would it be fair to say ,that if wilder doe’s exercise the rematch clause ( he has a death wish ) ???

  • Why hang up the gloves now? God gives you the blessing of height and strength and you quit at age 32? Why, so you can sit at the pub? Like Samson, God will take your gifts away and leave you a pile of useless matter. Respect your God, Tyson, fight on, you will know in your heart when it’s time to quit. And Mr. John, sthu
