Ruben Villa (12-0) of Salinas, not known particularly for his punching power, turned on the juice and stopped Ricardo Lopez (7-3-2) of Mexico in the sixth round of their featherweight main event late Saturday night at the Omega Center in South Sacramento. Lopez was willing to mix but was outgunned during most of the scheduled eight-rounder and was dropped by a left-left-right combination for the only knockdown. Regaining his feet, he became easy prey for follow-up shots to force the stoppage.
The card, by Thompson Boxing Promotions, was held outdoors in the back lot of a commercial business. Portable lighting and seating, plus live streaming via Facebook still attracted several hundred fans to the makeshift venue featuring several Northern California fighters.
