A Great 2024

By Mauricio Sulaimán
Son of José Sulaimán – President of the WBC

Another year is ending, a cycle closing, only to open another one. A 2024 that was marked and distinguished by so many things in my personal, professional, family life and also as a Mexican. I am going to dedicate this column to recount what 2024 was like for me…

  • On August 18, my beloved mother left us. I no longer have a father or mother. Now, my siblings and I are the generation to continue the Sulaimán Saldívar family, along with our children and one day the grandchildren will arrive. The departure of my mother brought us an outpouring of love and unity from family, friends and even strangers, because she left a great mark by sowing, generating and harvesting love, affection, friendship, attention and kindness.
  • In February and October I had the great fortune to visit the Holy Father Francisco in the company of my brother Héctor and our dear Adrián Pallarols; Two unforgettable and enriching encounters, with great learning gleaned from the spiritual leader of humanity.
  • In July, Mexico voted to elect Claudia Sheinbaum as President of our country. I have had the great honor of participating in various boxing activities and social responsibility programs guided and united via her leadership.
  • In June, I was present at perhaps the last promotion of the legendary man with the raised hair. Don King, who at 93 years old, put on a memorable card at the Hard Rock in Miami.
  • I visited Thailand in January to witness the WBC Muaythai World Festival, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of this program that my father started at the request of the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej.
  • I was present in the Philippines for the first annual awards dinner of the family of Flash Elorde and the legend Manny Pacquiao.
  • I missed the big fight between Mexican idol Saul Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia, because on May 5th my son Jose graduated with highest honors from the university, giving us great satisfaction and pride for his dedication and determination to be someone in life.
  • I witnessed one of the best heavyweight fights in history, when Tyson Fury lost his WBC world championship and Oleksander Usyk became UNDISPUTED champion in an epic battle full of drama in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I returned to that country to see the rematch on December 21st and although it was not as dramatic a fight as the first, it was a memorable encounter that Usyk won again.
  • In January, I held a meeting with the most important promoters in the world of boxing. This Promoters Summit was very productive and managed to bring them together in the much needed unity for agreements and reciprocity. Bob Arum, Matchroom, Tom Brown and Luis de Cubas from PBC, Salvatore Cherchi, Fernando Beltran, Tom Loeffler and others were there.
  • I had an unforgettable meeting with wounded soldiers from Ukraine, who were brought to Riyadh to watch the fight; I spoke with them, they were given WBC kits and we confirmed the World Boxing Council’s unconditional support for peace. We proceeded with a donation of 250 thousand dollars promised to Pope Francis to be used for children in Ukraine and Gaza.
  • An agreement was signed with His Excellency Turki Alalshik for a wide variety of social responsibility activations at a global level, with the collaboration of WBC and Riyadh Season.
  • I held a meeting with the leaders of World Boxing and its president Boris Van Der Vorst, to confirm our support to seek recognition from the International Olympic Committee and thus guarantee that boxing continues in the Olympic Games.
  • We collaborated to celebrate the 100th fight card of the MGM arena in its 30 years of existence, remembering the great battles and magnificent classics held there with Tyson, Chavez, Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Pacquiao, De la Hoya, Canelo, Mayweather and so many more.
  • I was present at the induction of my friend Ana Maria Torres in the Hall of Fame in Canastota.
  • We held a medical congress in Orizaba Veracruz Mexico with the presence of more than 150 doctors.
  • I was honored with the State Sports Award in Mexico City in December.
  • I was called to be a counselor of the Chapultepec Zoo Trust in the company of honorable colleagues from Mexican society.
  • I was in Japan for a fabulous fight card, where Junto Nakatani successfully defended his world championship.
  • I had the satisfaction of visiting Miss Nagano who at 99 years old, continues to run the Teiken Gym of my beloved Mr. Honda.
  • I was in Spain for a series of meetings with various groups to seek the relaunch of boxing in that country.
  • I managed to establish a very special friendship with David Summers, singer of Hombres G and his family.
  • We celebrated with great results the interdependence boxing tournament organized by the Secretariat of Citizen Protection in Mexico.
  • We held our annual Convention in Hamburg, Germany. An unforgettable meeting in which the world of boxing combined and united, to evaluate what was achieved during the year and plan ahead about what to do in the coming twelve months.
  • The Riyadh Season WBC Boxing Grand Prix was signed. A tournament that will be held during 2025 with 5 events in Saudi Arabia; 32 fighters in 4 divisions (featherweight, super lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight) is the World Cup that my father dreamed of holding. Now, with the support of Turki Alalshik it is a tangible reality.
  • I managed to get closer to one of the idols of my life, the creator of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters and the singer of Scorpions, Klaus Meine. Both received the peace award from the WBC.

Did you know?

Boxing is off the list of sports for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and there is only one chance left to rescue it, to achieve the affiliation of countries to World Boxing who already has the support of the IOC.

Today’s anecdote…

I was born on December 30, 1969. My mother was a warrior, because she had six children, all of them natural births. On the 30th, the nurses told her to hold on so that I would be born on January 1st because that way she would receive many gifts from many places. My father asked her, “How do you hold on, old lady? What? It’s like I’m crazy, I’m ready and you’re there eating mango watching me as if nothing happened… During my entire childhood I suffered because no one congratulated me, they didn’t give me gifts because they were mixed with Christmas presents. There was no party because everyone was preparing for the New Year. However, what I never lacked was the affection and love of my parents in the company of our family in Ciudad Valles with my grandfather Elías. Nowadays, with social networks and Facebook reminders, everyone talks to me and makes me feel very happy.

    • Don’t forget you left Mexico for a better life in the U.S. Just like many of the Mexican boxers who came and achieved success in the U.S. – something that would never have happened they stayed in Mexico. But you never hear a Viva USA.

      • I love USA
And yea we came for a better life but we did not ask for help to the goverment
This country is full of homeless when a Mexican who move here the next day is working
We have lot of money in the pocket
With no English and no papers so still proud to be Mexicans

        • If people come here for a better life they should leave the other place behind them. If they don’t have papers they should see an immigration lawyer and try to become a citizen. Do the right thing.

      • I know you are little ignorant and that’s why you don’t u der stand that wherever you live you always be proud of your country

Even Somalians are proud of Somalia while living in USA

Did you see see how many millions of people supported their teams in the baseball World Cup ??? And 90% of them live in USA

        • I perfectly understand your love for Mexico, but I do have an issue with your and others’ reluctance to give credit to the country that took you with no English and no papers (?).

          • Why you say that ???
I love Minnesota the place I live with all my heart
            I don’t hate USA
I wish the best for this country
That’s why I vote for Donald trump

          • I also show my love to USA being a good citizen
I don’t toss garbage on the streets
            I respect my neighboors
            I follow the law
I try to do everything right like driving , no fighting in the street , have my insurance and driver license active things that keep me away of trouble

Is hard to explain it but the day you move to Japan you will understand me
Then your love for your country will come out while you respect Japan
Bit you will feel your pride

          • If you truly want to change the world why don’t you and other displaced Mexicans put pressure on the Mexican Government to run the place properly so that citizens are not forced to leave in search of a better life!!!!!

          • You think is easy ???
If that be case there would not be poverty in the world

Even USA is going down and it won’t get up from this going down hill

          • We are here for the money but we all want to be in Mexico
The life is better happier and safer in Mexico

But we helping to increased the economy here in USA

          • E side the government don’t let us do it

            Just like here

Why do t you increased the economy ???

            Because you can’t

          • I just believe that the U.S. should not come to the rescue because Mexico can’t look after its people. The U.S. needs to focus on its own people and not bend over for people with no papers and no English. Mexico SHOULD LOOK AFTER MEXICANS NOT THE U.S.A.

          • I agree with that but unfortunately USA need us
Because we take the jobs that Americans can’t do

          • They also take the jobs that Americans will do. People should stop sneaking in thru the back door. If gringos enter Mexico illegally and are caught they are booted out of the country in 48 hours. There are no sanctuary cities in Mexico for illegal gringos.

          • American won’t work in agriculture , cleaning bathrooms , or working in the kitchen

          • I have cleaned some of the nastiest restrooms you ever saw.
            I have worked in kitchens.
Factories. Warehouses. Never did agriculture, but I love to grow things.

          • So its not like USA is helping Mexico

The reality is that Mexico is helping USA

Imagine how much taxes Mexican restaurant pay per year ????

            Plus labor hand

          • Mexico operates so badly it cannot create a proper living for its people and displaces them to the U.S. and you believe that Mexico is helping the U.S.? A true Mexican would stay in Mexico and make a difference in his HOME COUNTRY (and not make ridiculous excuses for deserting Mexico, as you do). VIVA U.S.A.

          • If your country would not need Mexicans they would already kick us out but they can’t
Indoor Companies , construction and agriculture department would be empty

And don’t worry …there more than 130,000,000 of people in Mexico

And they happier than us who live in USA

And yea viva USA even when is very unsafe and full of homeless viva USA

          • We have enough tomato pickers, chicken pluckers, landscapers, and dishwashers. We don’t need 10 million more.

          • Mexico don’t displaces us
It’s a personal decision to move here
And if you don’t want Mexicans here you should tell your criminal government that they should not steal the Mexican territory like Texas New Mexico California Arizona Nevada Utah etc etc etc

Your goverment is not full of angels that’s why you kill people in every single war

          • Let me tell you something funny
In Mexico everybody absolutely everybody has a house and bed to sleep every night
USA has lot of homeless people who sleep in the streets , sidewalks, store doors , stop lights , benches , and bridges

And the Mexican streets are cleaner than USA streets

So if you want more let me know

Viva USA the king of homeless people

          • Because is border just like Tijuana
There are thousands of centro América people messing everything

Also if you go Juarez go to wealthy areas as well

          • But isn’t this why you try, namely, because it is difficult and you want to help your beloved MEXICO! Why desert your beloved Mexico when you can stay and help? Now you are helping a country that doesn’t really need you, the U.S.!!!

          • If USA would need me I would not be USA citizen

But yea I love to live in USA the country with more crime in the whole world
The most unsafe place to live
Where everyday is like being in a war with people and society

          • If the U.S.A. needs you, surely Mexico needs you more. Surely you are a traitor to Mexico and cover it up with your pro-Mexican boxing comments?

          • Economy and sport are totally different topics

If you move to china and you attend a soccer game china vs USA you will cheer for USA not for china

          • Love it or leave it, my friend. If you
live here, work here, and have kids here you should not be waving a
            Mexican flag.

          • I agree to don’t wave Mexican flag but I don’t agree to stop love my country like Colton wants me to

          • I’m not trying to help nobody but myself
This country is 90% of immigrants
There were Mexicans here before white people

          • The official stats say 14%!! Then again facts are not your strong point. You can go back in history all you like but you are Mexican in your heart and to avoid being a traitor you should return to Mexico asap. You’ve had your run and Trump wants people like you out. You can celebrate all you like…FROM MEXICO.

          • Illegal immigration is wrong. No other nation on earth puts up with illegal immigration as much as the USA. If people sneak into this country they are not respecting our laws. People say they come here to work. That’s fine. Come here LEGALLY.

          • I agree but you were the first ones to started this immigration when you move here after native Americans you should stay in Europe or Africa

      • “You never hear a viva USA”, and you never will. This is the land of milk and honey for a lot of people that don’t need to be here. They sneak in thru the back door with a backpack full of clothes, and they call that ‘moving’ to another country.
They are so nonchalant about it. As if nothing is wrong with that. Then they wire the money home. It’s true that many of them work in meatpacking plants and work in the hot fields all day. It’s also true that many Americans are lazy AF and won’t do those jobs. I see asphalt and road construction crews that are all Mexicano. Concrete crews that are all Mexicano. Americans used to work those jobs, but lately they seem to all be
replaced by the Mexican nationals. They get their nephews, cousins, brothers, and next door neighbors in there and next thing you know there are no Americans working there. Seeing that everywhere.
“Press 2 for english”. “See habla espaniol”. If I moved to a Latin American
country (legally, of course), I would be expected to speak some spanish after some time. We have people living in the United States for 30 plus years and still can’t speak a lick of english. The people that immigrated to the US 100 years ago were proud to become Americans. The
people that come here now want to Balkanize. They don’t want to speak the language. They want to live here and REAP THE BENEFITS, but they don’t want to assimilate. They want to keep all the old country customs and live among their own. Very different immigrants in these times. That’s my 2 cents.

        • Viva Mexico is idiosyncrasy is part of our culture

We say it inside Mexico as well

Is just like whe. In a sport game you guys scream:

          USA USA USA “”

Or when you say “””this is the best country in the world”””

Or when you say “””I love America “””

          When Mexico is America too

          • Carlos, I never scream USA, USA.
Not my style. The USA has a lot of problems. Not the same country as it was 40-50 years ago. The US government is bankrupt. We are like Argentina with a Gucci bag.
We are like the Roman Empire at
the end. Falling apart. The people are losing hope. That’s why so many people are on drugs. The money is not worth anything. It
buys nothing, unless you have millions of dollars. Most people in
America want Mexico to become a great country. The Mexican people are good people. They work hard. America just has to take care of America right now or there will not be anything left in 10 years.

    • Thank you, Gary. Same to you. I am sure Fightnews in 2025 will keep catering to the Sillyman’s arrogance by fueling his conceited articles on this website.

  • Does Mauricio know that the cartels are the 4th largest employer in his country? They hire 435 people every week. Was reading that recently on Zero Hedge or Drudge. What’s worse is America buys what they sell. The old supply and demand.
One hand greases the other. Meanwhile, lives are being ruined. Look at Kensington in Philly. Look at any place where the zombies are walking around.

    • “Look at Kensington in Philly”
      – I was born and raised in South Philly.
      – Fentanyl mixed with tranq (short for horse tranquilizer) is the new thing. It is even starting to tear up Mexico.
      – You reap what you sow……………

    • They hire because job security is really low in that line of work. One day your here, next day your gone! Probably in a metal drum!

      • Mexico has the same problem as America. Corruption. We have drugs in
America because (unfortunately) Americans want drugs. Americans want to put garbage in their bodies. Americans also want to sell garbage to other Americans. Mexico is more than happy to provide the garbage. Sad state of affairs. Look what happened to the USA.
Everywhere you look there is temptation.
        Alcohol, gambling, cannibis dispensaries,
prostitution, dope, porn, and all kinds of filth. Gangbangers. People destroying the
communities they live in. Politicians talking out both sides of their mouths.
Jobs being sent away to other countries.
Corporate greed. The breakdown of the
families. Hyper-inflation. People have lost hope. We need structure. We need
hope. We need God. Okay, sermon over.

        • Mexico has more corruption than any other country in the world but that does not affect the country because politicians steal anyway
But because Mexico is very reach we still live decent after decades and decades of being robbed by politicians

USA has no corrruption but e erythi g is out of control
          Homeless people
          Drugs
          Guns
          People luting
          Etc etc etc

USA bad no natural sources like Mexico

That’s why if two countries in Europe get into a war …USA pay off like when Russia attacked ucraine the gasoline went up and everything is too expensive

  • I think I read “I” in that piece at least a hundred times??? Wow, you are really full of yourself aren’t you?

  • >
