WBA welterweight world champion Yordenis Ugás showed off his skills at a media workout in Las Vegas on Wednesday, as he nears his 147-pound title unification clash against WBC and IBF champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. taking place Saturday, April 16 live on Showtime PPV from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“Being an underdog means nothing to me,” stated Ugas, who is about a 3:1 underdog. “I was the underdog against Pacquiao and now again against Spence. I’ve always been the underdog and it doesn’t phase me…I’m happy to be fighting in Spence’s backyard because they have great fans down there in Texas. It just adds extra motivation. Fans can expect me to fight like a warrior. I’m going to take all of my hard work into the ring on April 16.”

Ugás’ Trainer Ismael Salas added, “I watched Errol Spence fight Shawn Porter and then I watched Errol Spence fight Danny Garcia, after Spence had his accident. It was not the same Errol Spence Jr. I do believe he lost something between the Porter and Garcia fights…we need to absorb the punching power of Spence. Everyone knows he’s a front-footed fighter who throws bombs from start to finish. It’s no secret that we need to use Spence’s aggressiveness and make it work in our favor.”

  • Ugas has as good a chance of beating Spence, if not better, than anyone else at the moment.

I think it’s probably not accurate to judge Errol off of the Garcia fight. We don’t really know how much he lost. Of course he had the accident and was out for over a year. Now another year has passed. Who knows what Spence will bring.

My prediction is Ugas will drop a controversial-re: BAD decision- to Spence.

  • Tempted to pick Ugas in this fight as I have no idea what to expect from Spence at this point with all that time off and I’m thinking that there is no way he could possibly be at his best now. The best Errol Spence Jr. I’ve ever seen beats the best Yordenis Ugas I’ve seen, probably 8-4, 7-5ish and maybe drops him, but I’m thinking Ugas may be closer to his best than Spence can be at this point.

  • Ugas is nothing to play with. He will be just as strong as Spence and the more superior boxer

  • The temptation to pick Ugas is growing because there are too many unknowns with Spence, Jr. Glad I have a little time.

  • Spence is a wild card in the deck of cards. Just when people question his ability after the automobile wreck or time off, he delivers a good performance once the bell rings. Spence is fully aware Ugas can be a dangerous fighter at times. I have no doubt Spence is putting the time in to prepare for this fight. I will predict Spence on UD.

  • Good fight for Boxing. Kudos to Spence for fighting the best.
Ugas is the one guy Crawford wont mention. Ugas beat him in the amateurs and knows its a tough challenge.
Spence is a miracle man and will need to be at his best to beat a motivated Ugas. Ugas is huge at 147 and very crafty which is why we seen Porter trying to box him instead of using his usual scrappy style.
Ugas beat Paq fairly easy with Paq fighting aggressively.

    • I thought Ugas really beat Porter easily and handedly. I knew he was going to beat Pac. After Ugas beat Pac I wanted to see him and Crawford. But I’ll take Him and Spence to spice up the Ugas and Crawford fight

  • Ugas beats a washed up 40 year old former flyweight and some of you think he beats Spence ?? Seriously ??

  • I thought Spence actually looked alright in the Garcia fight, was expecting something to be missing but couldn’t see it. Ugas poses a tough fight for anyone, so this a good fight to see where Spence is really at

  • At initial glance it looked to me in the Garcia fight that Spence was not the same fighter, upon further inspection; as I’ve watched the contest again, he did not look that much different than in previous fights. One thing I will say, is that he looked to flinch sometimes, but now that he’s had the eye surgery, maybe something was up with his vision. I expect Spence to get the job done in a tough scrap as Ugas is no joke. My issue with him, is that he tends to posture and pot shot, Spence will be throwing, so Ugas won’t win a decision by pot shotting.

  • I got a feeling this will be a very tactical, yet active 12 rounder. Both guys are big 147 fighters and have high ring IQ. I got a feeling Spence will use that 3 inch reach advantage to be first against Ugas and keep him at bay, while Ugas tries to establish his jab and counter punches. Truly a 50/50 fight. I’m just glad we get to see this fight happen. Whoever wins, go get Crawford!

    • That is enough reason not to give in to the thought of betting Ugas.

  • Being the underdog gets you hungry, don’t worry about that Yordenis.. You can do it if you trust your skills..
