Taylor, Kid Galahad victorious in Boston

Ireland’s Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Taylor (11-0, 5, KO’s) totally dominated Cindy Serrano (27-6-3, 10 KO’s) over 10 rounds at lightweight. Taylor threw a combination, created space, cut off the ring, then threw another 1-2 combination. The equation worked well for her as Serrano could never mount any effective offense during the entire bout. Taylor made her opponent eat leather quite a bit as her impressive accuracy caught Serrano directly on the chin on many occasions. Serrano, to her credit, hung in there and didn’t quit despite having little chance of winning. Taylor retains her WBA and IBF Female Lightweight Titles. Final scores were unanimous on all 3 cards, 100-90

In an IBF featherweight title eliminator, Kid Galahad (25-0, 15 KO’s) outlasted Toka Kahn-Clary (25-2, 17 KO’s) by unanimous decision over 12 rounds. Galahad was busier than Kahn-Clary most of the night, neither fighters ever putting the other in any trouble. Galahad scored on the inside and seemed to press the action a bit more in which the judges agreed. Kahn-Clary was perhaps a victim of his southpaw stance by getting his foot stepped on throughout the contest. To Galahad’s credit, his defense didn’t allow Kahn-Clary to land any of his signature combinations and was able to keep him at bay outside of his striking range. Galahad scored through Kahn- Clary’s guard enough to earn the final scores, 118-110 (twice) and 115-113. Galahad will now fight the winner of Josh Warrington versus Carl Frampton in December.

In a 10 round bout at super lightweight, Tommy Coyle (25-4, 12 KO’s) defeated Ryan Kielczweski (29-4, 11 KO’s) by unanimous decision. Coyle won most of the rounds, but turned up the heat in the 5th and dropped Kielczweski in the 7th with a solid left hook. Kielczweski, who was a late substitution for Danny O’Connor (30-3, 11 KO’s), moved up in weight to challenge UK’s Coyle. He was a very game opponent and continued to move forward and press the action despite being out-punched throughout most of the fight. Kielczweski impressively survived the 7th after hitting the canvas, taking Coyle’s best punches until the bell rang. The final scores were 99-90, 98-91, and 96-93.

Scott Quigg (34-2-2, 26 KO’s) made easy work of Mario Briones (29-8-2, 21 KO’s) landing heavy left and right hooks to his head en route to a TKO in the first round. Quigg displayed some of his signature head movement early in the round, then ferociously unloaded his arsonal to which Briones had no defense. Quigg, who is trained by Freddie Roach, would like another shot at a Featherweight Title after recently dropping a decision to WBO Champion, Oscar Valdez last March.

In a rematch from last June, Mark DeLuca (22-1, 13 KO’s) defeated former Contender star, Walter Wright (17-5, 8 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at super welterweight in a back and forth affair. DeLuca, tough and slick, seemed to land the harder 1-2 combinations switching from southpaw to orthodox throughout the fight. Wright, now 37, upset DeLuca earlier in the year, but lacked a little zip on his punches in the second half of the fight. Consequently, Wright had to give back the regional WBA-NABA Super Welterweight Title after the judges agreed, 97-93, and 96-94 (twice) in DeLuca’s favor.

After only a few moments in the first round, Kazakhstan welterweight Daniyar Yeleussinov (4-0, 2 KO’s) landed multiple combinations on Matt Doherty (8-6-1, 4 KO’s) and the ref stopped the fight. Yelessinov landed so many solid left hands to Doherty’s head so quickly, that the ref stepped in before Doherty even hit the canvas. Yeleussinov is scheduled to fight again on Nov. 24th at Casino de Monte Carlo.

Ireland’s Niall Kennedy (12-0-1, 7 KO’s) defeated Brendon Barrett (7-1-2, 5 KO’s) in a 6 round bout at heavyweight. Kennedy earned the unanimous decision in a slow-moving affair but was able to get the job done and remain undefeated. Final scores were 60-53 (twice) and 58-55.
