Olympian Harry Garside wins Aussie title

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Tokyo 2021 Olympic lightweight bronze medalist Harry Garside (2-0, 1 KO) scored a one-sided points victory over Sudan-born and Australian-based Manuer Matet (4-2, 2 KOs) over ten rounds to capture the vacant Australian lightweight title on Wednesday night at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Scores Charlie Lucas 98-92, Pat O’Connor 98-92, Mick Heafey 99-91. Garside took control of the contest from the opening bell and boxed impressively, punishing his opponent with accurate combinations. Garside was in good fight condition and did not sit down on his stool between rounds. He is guided by Hall of Fame trainer Johnny Lewis.

“He’s moving beautifully Harry Garside,” veteran broadcaster and former IBF 130 pound champion Barry Michael said on Fox Sports. “He has impeccable timing. He got caught a few but the majority of the time he’s making Matet miss and then landing his own, and then he skips away.”

  • 10 rounds in his second fight. Well done Harry! You too Manuer, only sixth fight.

  • On paper a total mismatch. Olympic medalist with over 60 fights vs a novice. Garside looked brilliant with his kit of punches, speed & evasion. Only thing missing was power. Only hurt Matet in 9th rd but never looked like dropping him once. Reminded me a little of former Irish and Euro amateur champ Paul Griffin who similarly had little power. Some good local matchups for Garside to test himself in Asis, Fleming, Wilson, Kye McKenzie & even Brock Jarvis. Will watch with interest as he has a lot of promise.

  • Harry has a decent motor on him, have seen other fighters throw those flurries and gas out. I was expecting him to slow down, but he kept throwing every round. Not sure about the not sitting down between rounds, not many fighters today are fighting 10 rounders in their 2nd pro fight. Well done Hazza

  • if your a betting man just take the opposite of what Jeff fenech says he is always wrong

    • Yep spot on mate, Jeff is a legend – but man he backs the loser a lot of the time!. Also Harry had beaten this bloke in the amateurs so not a huge surprise. Awesome to see him going 10 rounds so soon!

    • How right you are , he was a good fighter. But has no idea as a judge. There is no doubt those fights have taken there toll . When In commentary the other night he made the comment. “I would tell tell him to hit him low,” The network needs to reconsider his credibility.
