Kambosos-Loma on June 5?

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Undisputed WBA, WBO, IBF, and WBC franchise lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos will be defending the championship on June 5  at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, it was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. Former world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko is currently considered the most likely opponent.

“I can tell you now, unequivocally, that George’s first defense will be in Australia. You can take that to the bank. We want to make the biggest splash we can and that is on the instructions of the fighter,” promoter Lou DiBella told the newspaper. “Right now, the marching orders from George is to make the biggest fight possible. That’s what we’re working on.”

  • great
fantastic matchup for Kambosos down under
    could be a huge event
    lets hope it happens.

  • Wow I really respect George as a fighter and a man for accepting this challenge but I honestly think this is the worst matchup for him. I hope he gets a boatload of money at least.

  • Balls of steel taking that as a first defence. Prefer to watch that over him chasing ‘The Cyclist’ all night

    • The cyclist…. I thought the object of fighting is to hit and not get hit…. Not stand in a fucking phone booth & trade shots. Because a fight uses the entire ring, which is what it’s there for he’s a cyclist… You cats are funny as hell. The biggest fight is Devin Haney!!! A fight for all the marbles. Oh well, Lil Georgey will lose his belts & we’ll never have an undisputed champ @135. Loma, asked for witness protection to avoid the cyclist as you call him bc he knew he couldn’t win that fight. Arum will cherry pick Loma’s fight & What should be a hot division will once again have fighter tap dancing around each other…. Sad day in boxing if Loma gets the Georgy fight!!!!

      • if that is the case, then maybe Devin will step up finally and fight Tank or Teo. I would say Ryan G but no telling when that kid gets his head out of his Butt. A real champion doesnt need to be “unified” to know he is the best, he needs to take on all challenges to prove he’s the best.. Haney would either expose Tank or himself with that fight.

      • Haney should’ve never taken that free belt and remained a mandatory no.1. Instead he took the bait and now he’s missing out on the biggest fights.

  • really good result we will see what loma has left
Ive changed my mind on Kambosos is good
i think George my be too much for him he is in his prime and Loma is on the way out ever so slightly

    • I think Loma is entering his prime. Kammy has maybe two good punches. In fact he throws every punch slightly wrong. Not being anit Kammy , just facts. Slow the film down and he is a slapper who doesnt have a classic hook, cross, nor jab. I think it will be a joke as Loma schools him. In fact it could be embarrassing. The guy who knocked out Edwin Rosario, Juan Nazario was knocked out in 2 minutes by the great Pernell Whitaker

  • two “fight” deal. Loss and rematch loss will set Kammy up financially. Issue I have is it keeps Loma out of real fights for another year. Tank, Shakkur, are better fights. Also Loma cannot stand Shakkur getting better and he getting older. Just a thought.

    • Lmao. Tank is way overrated. loma even stated that Floyd knows to keep tank away from him because he will get schooled. Shakur has skills tho, i would give him an edge against loma due to his youth. But Loma skills will make Tank look like a novice. Tank will try to bull rush and take him out by swarming him but in the end it will be the matador taking out the bull. I actually see tank running out of gas due to swinging and missing and then getting ko’d late by loma.

      • on point SteveG. I see the same for Tank. Tank is fast as hell, but also has to much muscle. That will slow him down in the later rounds like you mentioned.

        • It all depends. You can be muscled, but have more fast twitch fibers. Back in my bodybuilding days, like 40 years ago, some bodybuilders and power lifters were extremely tough in the streets. Others real pussies. Its all in the person. Look at M. Tyson, was super fast and explosive.

    • Tank vs Haney. there is already some beef there. It would be easy to setup If Mayweather allows it.

      • No one is going to fight Haney. Garcia just talks, Kambosos lied, Lopez lied and Tank stays silent and does what Floyd says. He may as well move up in weight.

  • KAMBOSOS is chasing Greatness; if he beats Lomachenko he enters the Pound 4 Pound list!!! Great match up!

  • I knew Kambosos wasn’t going to fight Haney. HOWEVER, I’m not mad at this fight at all. I’m rooting for Lomacheko. He seemed willing to fight the best at one time so hopefully if he wins he may give Haney an opportunity.

  • Works for me! I don’t think it’s the best matchup for Kambosos. I think the Lomachenko that fought Commey beats Kambosos on a clear decision, but it’s still an excellent fight and hopefully they get it done.

  • YES!!!!! Aside from Tank this is the BEST match possible!! Props to Kambosos for not only taking on a tough challenge, but also for doing it his way!!! Hope he makes a solid purse!!

  • Man George going home usually a fighter wins a title go home fight a tomato can then a top flight contender but much respect to George for give fights fan great fights

  • Who is putting this rumor out and why? I will believe it when we see a formal announcement with a scheduled press conference. This could be a bluff to gain some leverage against Haney. Nothing is official until there are signed contracts with consequences for breaching them.

The only thing that looks to be certain is that Kambosos is l either fighting Lomachenko (a former champion) or Haney (an undefeated current champion – at least per the WBC), so that shows that George is not going to duck any real challenge.

  • 1st defences don’t come much harder than this. George must be respected for not taking an easy defence and jumping straight into the fire, takes guts and a huge set of balls haha can’t wait.

  • Lomachenko is way better than Lee Selby and Mickey Bey (slick boxers, with not much punch). Kambosos struggled and barely escaped winning both fights by SD, so, assuming a healthy Lomachenko will be fighting him, the logic expectation should be a wide margin UD win in Lomachenko’s favor

  • Cannot wait for this one. It’s ironic that Loma can get the belts back and it won’t be an upset if he does.

    • For sure. Beat the man who beat the man who beat him. Loma wants this fight. With a win we could see Lopez again in his future.

  • Damn!! Kambo vs tank, kambo vs haney, kambo vs garcia, kambo vs loma…..ishhh, this promotors get us boxing fans hyped up with this matches and then boom shacka-lacka….he ends up fighting an unknown guy ranked #1 by some unknown european boxing federation cause they could never come to an agreement, so this great matches never materialise!

  • where has Teo been hiding, been very quiet. I guess his heart is broken and still needs time to mend. Interesting to see if he falls under the category of never the same after his first loss or hopefully he cuts out being a big dosser and gest serious about fighting

  • Loma had a great amateur career. One of the best really, but at the end of the day I don’t he deserved all the accolades. Its hard to pin it down. I guess………………just not all that. He will for sure lose that fight. Like 400 fights in the amateurs I believe burned him out. Burned out the fire before its time.

    • You must seriously be blind to Loma’s genius. His footwork, movement, and angles are second to none. He deserves all his accolades, praise and more for going up beyond his natural weight and fighting these bigger guys. Guys like Teo who can’t even make 135lbs anymore. Loma should honestly have never went past 130. he is one of the greatest technical boxers I have ever witnessed, and I’ve been watching since the 70s when i first put the mitts on in a back yard trial by fire session.

      • I agree with the majority of what you are saying. I have been an ardent follower of boxing too as a kid all the way back to the early 70s. I just dont see him as an all time great. Its truly hard to pinpoint what it is. I think part of my problem is being stuck in a time warp. Also with only 18 fights, how can one really say that? At 34 IMHO hes burned out.

  • i hope loma fights kambossa will be a good fight loma scooled commey loma a very skilled fighter

  • Undisputed?? you mean Unified, c’mon Fightnews get it right, only if Kambossos fought Haney would there be a Undisputed Champion, but Kambossos is obviously scared of the thrashing Haney would give him, regardless Loma schools Kambossos and takes the belts.

  • Cool my boy Loma is gonna retain his titles he lost because of his injury !! Just trash talking don’t reply lol !!! Good fight can’t wait..
