Don King to promote Makabu-Mchunu

The world’s greatest boxing promoter, Don King, has put together his latest championship fight pitting WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Junior Makabu and the number one challenger, WBC silver champion Thabiso Mchunu. King, who represents Makabu, came to an agreement with Mchunu’s representatives on the 12-round championship fight, to be held in the next two months.

“This is going to be one action-packed championship fight,” said King. “They are both warriors and this battle could result in one of the best championship fights of the year.”

Makabu (28-2 with 25 KOs) is from the Democratic Republic of The Congo, defended his championship in his hometown of Kinshasa as he stopped Nigeria’s Olanrewaju Durodola with two solid left hooks in the seventh round last December.

Makabu, who has won his last nine decisions, won the vacant title on Jan. 31, 2020 in winning a unanimous decision against Michael Cieslak.

Thabiso (23-5, 13 KOs), who hails from South Africa and is nicknamed “The Rock”, became the WBC Silver Titlist with a unanimous decision over Denis Lebedev on Dec. 21, 2019. He last defended his title and scored another unanimous victory over Evgeny Tishchenko on March 27, 2021. Thabiso has won his last four fights.

  • For those of you who are not aware, this is a rematch. They fought once before on May 16, 2015. Ilunga Junior Makabu came from behind to stop Mchunu in the 11th round. They are both very good fighters. This should be interesting. It won’t replace Fury/Wilder 3 as fight of the year, but, Ring Magazine will list it as an honorable mention.

    Speaketh … FJB.

    • You mean Trevor “The Impervious Pulverizer” Bryan? He probably won’t be. He just fought 9 months ago. It will be a couple more years before King has him back in the ring again.

      • Yeah, that’s a good point USF. He’s probably still resting up from that vicious battle with Stiverne. Wouldn’t want to rush him back in there before he’s healed up.

        • Yep. Neither warrior will ever be the same after that rousing slugfest. Actually looking forward to Makabu-Mchunu though. Wonder where this fight will take place…

  • Shouldn’t it be world’s “greatest” promoter instead of world’s greatest promoter?
I mean, he is great at fucking over his fighters, I will give him that.

  • Always put on competitive and very good undercards back in the day. Never got caught up in the Mia St John and Butterbean type of deal. At least Christy Martin was top of the women’s game and always gave her all.

  • My goodness! This SOB still around and signing fighters! One of the absolute biggest crooks in the sport of boxing! Has not only stolen from, but also ruined so many careers and lives! Shame on you Don!!!!!!!!!
