Spence: First Ugas, then Crawford

The Last Stand podcast hosted by Brian Custer has a new home. It debuted this week on the Showtime Sports YouTube channel. This week’s episode featured unified welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr.

On a potential fight with Terence Crawford…

“It’s something that I’m definitely looking forward to and it’s something that I’m willing to work towards. After I get past Ugás, it could be an easy fight to make – it just depends on stipulations between me and him. I’ll bend but I’m not going to break. I’ll take off my coat but I’m not going to give it to you. So, I think it could happen and I’m looking forward to that fight. I think it’s a legacy fight for him and myself.”

On Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz…

“I’m not one of those older guys that gets mad or stuff like that when a younger guy calls them out. That’s what they’re supposed to do because if a Jaron Ennis or a Vergil Ortiz, I saw he just recently called me out, if a lot of these young dudes didn’t call me out, I’d think there’s something wrong with them because when I was young and I was coming up, man, I was calling out everybody.”

On his future plans…

“[To become undisputed and then move up in weight] is definitely the plan. That’s definitely the plan. It’s unheard of for a fighter to stay at one weight class his whole career –especially a big fighter like myself. The plan is to definitely move up after I finish what I’m doing at 147.”

  • If the Crawford fight doesn’t materialize it’ll be yet another in a long list of fights that didn’t happen! Totally shameful

    • I don’t even understand why this fight has been so hard to make. It’s not like either of them are superstars. They both deserve to be, but I don’t think they are household names. This fights could potentially turn the winner into a superstar and even potentially cement the legacy of both if it is a great fight. There isn’t a lot to lose

      • I don’t know what’s so difficult to understand – they simply didn’t come to the agreement that would satisfy both of them and especially their promoters, managers and other leeches.

        • Point taken, but usually you have these situations when there is a lot to lose. For example, Floyd and Manny were superstars regardless of whether they fought or not. They could however damage their legacy. To me this has been a springboard to superstardom for both of them for a while

  • Too much money on the table for Spence-Crawford not to happen. Most of the top 147lbs fighters will be headed to 154lbs as Ennis becomes the #1 contender and fans demand they fight him. Ortiz will be hard to beat also and dont get enough mentions as a top 147.

    • Judging by his last fight, or his last attempt at a fight, Ortiz might already be on his way to 154.

  • Sounds like a plan… since the Ugas fight is just a tuneup for Crawford, maybe it shouldn’t cost 80 bucks to watch.

    • If he does actually end up fighting Crawford, you know this will end up looking like the price of a tuneup. That will come in at the low low price of $119.99.

  • I do feel Spence will defeat Ugas on points with his slick counter punching. Crawford vs Spence is the one we will all want to see. That is, if the greedy promoters can make it happen.

  • I think both Ennis and Virgil can give ko to you Spence is time to wake up time change.

  • Spence may not even get past Ugas, Ugas is a dangerous fight. Even if he does get by Ugas, no way in the world that coward Spence will ever fight Crawford. He’d come up with excuses like purses, weight, just plain chicken. He chickened out of a huge payday against Pacquiao and Ugas took the call…

    • come on man you act like Crawfish hasnt done that himself hell he finally fought a current top 5 147lber in Porter who then reveals he was about to retire and Dad throws in the towel for the first time in porters career then goes and hugs and takes pics with Crawfish and nobody questions that? hmmmm I say with uncle Bob out of the way it should be a doable fight but no way its a 50/50 hell probably not even a 60/40 im guessing 70/30 or some kind of other agreement just make it happen

  • Spence Crawford great fight? This isn’t even as good as McCrory Curry back in the day.

    • I think most people wanna see unification foremost and the only way we will know of it’s a great fight or not is if the two sign on the dotted line and the bell to begin round one goes off. From a technical standpoint it will surely look better than Fury/Wilder 3, I can promise you that.

  • Spence has to get past Ugas first but honestly I think Spence vs Crawfish is a pick em fight a good solid 50/50 big fight not a mega fight but for sure a big one and for sure closer to eithers prime then Mayweather vs Pacquaio lol

  • If Spence gets past Ugas and a fight does materialise between Spence and Crawford, would it be 2 southpaws facing each other?

  • Doesn’t Spence want 70/30 for the Crawford fight? That BS. They going have to fight in Dubai if they want 10+ million SMH

  • Separately i don’t thinks they draw that much money. Together probably much better. But, Is is enough to pay them both what they want? Idk
