Fury-Whyte sells 85k tickets in first 3 hours

Promoter Frank Warren has announced that 85,000 tickets were sold in just three hours for the April 23 clash at London’s massive Wembley Stadium between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte. Warren says he has submitted an application to the local authorities to extend the allowed capacity to 100,000! Fury is returning to the UK after five consecutive bouts in the US. It is his first fight in London in over seven years.

Warren commented: “I always imagined that this fight wouldn’t be a hard sell so I am happy we opted to stage it in the biggest and best venue in the UK. This illustrates just what a big draw Tyson has become, his personality is infectious and he truly is a champion of the people.

“He is also the #1 heavyweight in the world and one of the most recognized sportsmen on the planet. I am thrilled that we are bringing him back to Britain to perform on the biggest stage of all against Dillian Whyte and a domestic dust-up that will be the biggest boxing event of the year.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans for their incredible support of this event and we will be in for some night on April 23 at Wembley Stadium.”

  • Whyte’s conduct is inexcusable. Sulking over his $8M purse like a child.

    • aint nothing childish about millions of dollars of wiggle room when negotiating an agreement. As grown-ups not part of the negotiation lets not be childish and assume we know what he’s “Sulking” over.

      • The promoters – who know more than you and me – are pretty much saying the same plus the lack of professionalism in avoiding the press con is shameful. The man deserves to get KTFO! Well KTFO again – as AJ and Povetkin have already done it.

    • What conduct? The guy signed a bout contract. That bout contract doesn’t obligate him to do anything other than (1) show up for the weigh-in, and (2) participate in the fight. Nothing more, and his money is guaranteed whether a single ticket is sold or it gets 50 million PPV buys. Everyone involved wanted Whyte to adhere to what was being imposed? He’s adhering to what’s been imposed.

      • So, according to you, he has no duty to show face and promote himself and the fight. Seems spiteful and self-defeating to me. What if the fighter is getting a slice of the PPV proceeds?

      • Let me educate you since you obviously have never seen a bout contract and other related agreements that go along with a fight of this magnitude. I can guarantee you that there was an obligation for the boxer to “participate and cooperate in the promotion and publicity of the bout, including attending and taking part in any and all press conferences or media tours.”

  • And all you Boxing experts swore nobody was interested in that fight.
Im not sure when last Fury had an easy win. He got dropped twice in his last two fights and received a gift to continue, with a grotesque cut, in the Oto Wallin fight.
But, the truth dont fit that storybook narrative in ya’ll heads so I’m not surprised.

    • Even those reckoned amongst the greatest fighters of all time fought tough and determined opponents who gave a heavy whupp’n back — and proved not to be “easy wins.” Most of Marciano’s later fights were all-out wars against future hall of famers; and yet, the man never lost a match. The same with Ray Robinson — arguably the greatest boxer to ever lace up gloves (professionally): he too had a few bloody wars. That Fury has had some tough competitive fights, and eked his way through those adversities, only serves to elevate his status. (IMHO)

  • Tyson has said he will retire after this fight as indicated on other websites. Hmm, makes me wonder if he is saying that to promote ticket sales so folks can see his possible last fight. Who really knows.

  • Not surprised at all, imagine if it was Fury vs Joshua ! One hour and the arena would’ve been full ! Should be a good fight.

    • Gotta give credit to the European audience as they show up to support their fighters. I couldn’t even guess the last fight in the US that drew numbers even remotely on this scale.

      • US boxing fans favor Firesticks and pirated streaming of fights so no need to buy anything or go anywhere to see a fight. 🙂

      • @Brainchild Yes, I’ve noticed that boxing is alive and well in the UK and other parts of Europe, but seems to be dying here in the States.

        • Part of the problem is that there is very little ambition in the US to make big fights anywhere but Vegas or New York. Lots of cities have shows, but rarely does a big fight land outside of Vegas or New York. Because of this, very few fighters have the opportunity to develop as a regional favorite. It’s not like it was 40 years ago when a guy could be groomed most of his career in Detroit or Philly. Nowaways, by that guy’s fifth fight, he’s already being moved to MSG or some casino.

  • Very little interest in this fight and whyte is being his typical unprofessional self. Wanker!
