Fenech: Maloney is a future champ

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Hall of Famer Jeff Fenech was impressed with IBF mandatory contender Jason Maloney’s performance in unsuccessfully challenging IBF bantamweight champion Emmanuel Rodriguez, who narrowly retained his IBF world title by split decision on Saturday in Orlando, Florida. “I’ve never been prouder watching an Aussie fight for a long, long time,” said Fenech. “Jason hold your head up high, learn from this experience and it won’t be long before you have a belt around your waist. Great job my friend.”

The world bantamweight title has previously been held by all-time Aussie greats Jeff Fenech, Lionel Rose and Jimmy Carruthers. Fenech believes Moloney has what it takes to join these iconic heroes.

Moloney’s trainer Angelo Hyder and Moloney himself believe he did enough to earn the decision.

“I am devastated,” said Moloney. “After the fifth round I came on very strong and believe I won most if not all of the remaining rounds. I hope I can achieve my dream and become world champion very soon!”
