Jimenez dominates Robles, awaits title fight

By Robert Coster

Dominican boxing fans flocked to the Club El Million in Santo Domingo on Saturday to watch the ever popular WBA #2 jr bantamweight Norberto “Meneito” Jimenez (29-8-4, 16 KOs) win a one-sided ten round decision over Remson Robles (12-4, 6 KOs) of Venezuela. “Meneito” (the one who wiggles) decked Robles with a well-timed right-cross in the 6th round but the gritty visitor was able to survive until the final bell. The verdict was 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 in favor of the Dominican.

It was the second fight between both battlers (Jimenez had decisioned Robles in 2016). After the bout, Jimenez expressed the wish that his next fight should be for the world title. Said Meneito, “I haven’t lost a fight in seven years. I am the uncrowned world champion. My next fight should be for the title.”

In other noteworthy fights on the attractive card, ex-Olympian William Encarnacion (17-0, 14 KOs) won the WBC jr featherweight title by a unanimous nod over fellow Dominican Eliecer Aquino (19-3-1, 13 KOs) in a good ten round scrap.

Jr welterweight Julio De Jesus (27-1, 24 KOs) won a very hard fought eight round decision over Francisco Aguero (13-3, 9 KOs). De Jesus decked Aguero twice in the first round but Aguero answered in kind with a knockdown of De Jesus in the 2nd round. The fight was a wild slugfest with both boxers taking turns in hurting each other.

Olympian Luis Hector Garcia (7-0, 5 KOs) scored a scary one-punch knockout over Rafael Hernandez of Venezuela (26-10-2, 21 KOs) in the 6th round in a jr lightweights clash.

Jr welter Yomar Medina(21-0, 18 KOs) TKO4 Mario Beltre (17-5, 12 KOs).
