  • I have to say it looks pretty intense. Iam definitely watching it. Oscar fought the best of the best in their prime.

  • Proud to have been part of that saga in Oscar’s first fight in Madison Square Garden, main event De La Hoya v “Jesse” James Leija Dec 15, 1995.

    • You did a great job Ron in that fight and I respect the fact that you were inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame as a former fighter, referee and boxing historian.

Don’t pay attention to disrespectful people like that, they have an agenda to be noticed and the only way they know is to insult people.

Like you said they never use their real names once they crawl out from under a rock to disrupt a good boxing thread.

      • Thank you kindly John. The main thing here is The Golden Boy documentary, I saw part I and enjoyed it.

  • The same Ron Lipton that was the 3rd man in the ring in the Ruddock-Morrison fight? Whew. You had better nights I’m sure. Why you stopped that fight, I’ll never tell ya.

    • Hi JT,
I saw Razor get up from one of the hardest left hooks Morrison ever threw, it would have dropped a steer in a slaughter house. He was hurt badly and when he went down his legs went completely limp which is not a good sign.
When he got up he was taking too many punches to the head that were landing. Finally after getting another count, he kept taking shots one of which snapped his head back without any muscular control of his neck muscles. Had to be stopped!
Even on this page there are stories about Richard Steele who never stopped taking heat for the stoppage of Chavez v Taylor, Tony Weeks is still taking heat from stopping a title fight too soon and it goes on and on mostly from people who really never were fighters or officials.
Some people forget and others go out of their way to stop eating their twinkies, get off of their couch come onto a thread which has nothing to remotely do with a fight over 28 yrs ago and trash it with an insult. Then some person with a grudge jumps on the bandwagon with them.
      The usual internet troll bullshit.

Some “Fans” always yell “Stop the fight” or “Why did you stop it just when it was getting good?” There are even political hacks on various commissions who do the same thing while they either fail to see punches missing which the ref sees, or signs that a fighter is hurt or even still able to continue.

It always pumps up some little keyboard Jellywink who never uses their real name ever to insult an official instead of being respectful or polite.

They usually don’t know a left hook from a fish hook as they say, but they love to get in some kind of insult from afar. They are entitled to their opinion for sure, because opinions are like you know what, everyone has one.

I guess “JT” stands for just talking.

      • To be very honest…could care less about the dramatics of the stoppage….I am just impressed by being able to talk to a boxing referee ….that worked in boxing matches at a high level…now that I know …the name and hopefully…you are who you claim to be…then I have someone else to add a perspective/insight to my Library of boxing knowledge..,looking forward to discussing and learning from you Mr. Lipton…by the way Rudduck v. Morrison was a fun fight to watch…Both were at the tail end of their careers but evenly matched ..two great hook throwers .. Razor throw the most devastating hook of any fighter I have ever seen..in my opinion..that includes Roy Jones…Razor could generate “crazy” power.and it was lightening fast..without proper boxing technique….watch his fights with Micheal Dokes and Mike Tyson I …
IN THE Morrison fight … Morrison hit Razor with that hook and Razor went down like he got shot…. unbelievable…. Morrison showed plenty of heart in that fight…….fun fight…Study Razor’s hook…some destructive “ish”

    • Of all the fights to complain about a premature stoppage, Morrison/Ruddock
was NOT one of them. I thought Razor’s head was going to come detached from his body after that hook, and his legs were Jello when Lipton jumped in. I guess you wanted to see Donovan killed that night, huh? True casual you are.

  • Should be a good documentary. Oscar was a solid fighter and definitely fought the best in and around his weight class, one of my top 25 fighters of all time. Got gifted a decision against Sturm, and got blitzed by Hopkins and Paqaio, but had some great wins against Chavez, Quartey, Vargas, Mayorga, and Whitaker to name a few. His fight against Shaq is legendary. Not a fan of the stilettos, I must confess.

  • Oscar had some exceptional hand speed and skills. He had some entertaining matchups in his prime. I enjoyed watching him move up in the boxing world. The sacrifices this man made as a young athlete to get where he is today is a remarkable story within itself. I don’t agree with everything Oscar has done in the promoting world. However, his boxing reign is a different story.

  • It’ll just be more of Oscar contradicting himself like he’s done his entire career!! Check out the Breakfast Club interview which dropped about a week ago and you’ll see exactly what I’m referring to. Inside scoop….I was at his Boxing HOF induction ceremony and he made himself off limits to the fans the entire time, while the likes of Trinidad, Andre Ward, Joe Calzaghe, Zab Judah, just to name a few we’re very gracious!! Oscar looked bothered to be there!!

  • My apologies, Mr. Lipton. That was a perfect stoppage.I’m no troll. Just a human with an opinion. You were the best ref ever. Never seen a better 3rd man than you. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do. We all should be so thankful for MR. Ronald Lipton.
Better? A little sensitive are we? Still didn’t agree with the stoppage.

    • Yeah? Well, nobody on here agrees with you
      about it being premature.

  • I agree with JT, as well as the commentators at the time. Man, you people are babies. Stop crying, the man didn’t agree with the ref jumping in with 4 secs left.

    • “That’s not the point, the thread is about the documentary on Golden Boy and the ref was included in it and his post was polite and respectful.

Your pal obviously had to trash it up like a mutt.

Something like “2 pounds” of something vile forced into a 1 pound bag and jumping on the bandwagon with 2 cents or 2 lbs worth of baloney.

I’ll go with what a 2 state Hall of Fame referee and former fighter’s decision was to save Ruddock with punches that were all landing with no response, if they were missing that would be another story, as opposed to some armchair warrior hell bent on criticism bringing up an almost 3 decades old fight just to break chops on a thread that has nothing to do with it.

I remember Al Bernstein always complimenting that ref and that’s on tape too. Most people thinking the fight should not have been stopped weren’t getting up like Ruddock did from a killing punch or taking all those shots he did. Easy to say. Your pal’s comments stand out like a sore thumb on a harmless friendly thread.

  • Thank you guys for all of the thumbs down on myself disagreeing with a ref stoppage. So, Mr. Ron Lipton melts down when I mention 1 fight. Says we are ALL idiots if we did not think the Chavez- Taylor fight was spot on. Even though he got up with 2 secs remaining. And we don’t know shit, because 90 percent of us thought Tony Weeks gave Rolly a complete gift of a stoppage. Clowns..Thumbs down? Silly ass hypocrites. Stay off the bottle cue ball. No need to get mad. You had a bad night..
    JT= Just Thinking
    Side note: Crawford by TKO9
    Doctors Stoppage. Eye issue.
    Bet on

    • Response:

So JT is now JFNT, wow, LOL.

What does that stand for? Just failed not thinking?

I read all the posts and I must say that the initial post by the referee was quite appropriate as being honored to be part of the fight films on the documentary. That was it, period.

Then out of the blue along comes a troll troublemaker like JT who of course hides their real identity on these boxing sites then predictably starts lying and crying about it all after starting trouble while throwing another person’s name out there while hiding their own, all of which is really quite cowardly.

Then gets a friend to help him ruin a thread even more by begging him to agree with him.

This guy JT crawls out from the dark, hiding his real identity, then slithers onto a post about the Golden Boy documentary and criticizes the ref for a stoppage in 1995? Are you kidding me? Then says stay off the bottle cue ball? Then cries about all the criticism about his posts.

The negative reaction to your posts I believe has nothing to do with your opinion of a stoppage, rather more of a criticism of your non thinking impulse rude posting on a boxing thread that only was dealing with the De La Hoya documentary.

Then “JT’S”distortion of the truth while he made up a lie intimating that the other guy said “90 percent of us” are wrong about other stoppages? Bull spit, that is not what I read on that post even remotely.

You writing that seems like a pathetic attempt to get other posters on your side when in fact the ref’s post said nothing like that whatsoever, only that those other refs simply took heat for their calls.

He never posted what you claimed. What a lie.

When one finally sees the photos of what these trolls really look like it usually says it all. Just another grossly out of shape know nothing about boxing couch potato that gets kicks out of criticizing others while hiding their real name in the dark.

Get a life and get back on your meds right away and be a nice guy instead of an obnoxious one. It has nothing to do with your wrong opinion of a stoppage, more so what compels you to bring it up on a thread like this to begin with just to be stupid and rude.

  • John, you are spot on. You are a very passionate fellow. Good for you. If you actually read my initial post, I disagreed with a stoppage of a fight. After that, Mr. Lipton explained how little I know about my own opinion. Why belittle me? It’s because you are the little man behind a poop smelling keyboard. Not me. Enjoy Spence Vs Crawford Sir.

    • I cannot believe the pubescent juvenile level of your last post and based on that alone in addition to your lack of manners how you are even allowed to post here is beyond me.

No. Like a poor marksman you keep missing the mark. This thread is initially about The Golden Boy, that ref posted that it was an honor to officiate at De La Hoya’s title fight.

On any boxing site let alone this one it is refreshing to have someone involved in a big fight to come on here. He was polite and respectful.

You felt compelled to immediately inject your sour note which was wrong anyway. Lack of tact, manners and another armchair fool trashing a nice moment.

Yes you have the usual boring hue and cry of “I have a right to my opinion” no matter how foolish it is.

But one must be careful of what a fool might say, because a fool might say anything and in your last post, it was cringeworthy.

      Enough already, lets move on.
