On Saturday, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (47-4-1, 41 knockouts) successfully defended his RING and WBC super flyweight titles with a wide unanimous decision over Iran Diaz, in Bangkok, Thailand. After the fight, he was greeted center ring by fellow 115-pound world champion Jerwin Ancajas, who holds the IBF belt. The two fighters appear keen to share a ring together in the not too distant future. Ancajas’ agent, Sean Gibbons is excited at the prospect of the potential unification.
“Jerwin is looking to fight the best,” said Gibbons. “He wants a signature fight. He watched the champ from ringside Saturday night and loves the fight! I love the battle of Champion versus Champion. Boxing is about styles and this fight is perfect for Jerwin. Someone is getting knocked out!”
Ancajas (30-1-2, 20 KOs) drew with unheralded Alejandro Barrios a week earlier, is one of the most active world champions in boxing. He has made six successful defenses since he bested McJoe Arroyo in September 2016.
Since winning the title “Pretty Boy” has travelled far and wide fighting in Macao, Ireland, Australia and three times in the U.S. he would have no problem once again fighting on the road, if a fight with Srisaket could be made.
“I came to Thailand, Saturday night, to watch with my own eyes the champion from Thailand fight,” said the 26-year-old southpaw. “I liked what I saw, he is my style, I would be the matador versus the bull! He comes right at you and wants to trade big punches. I do not like fighters that move a lot so Sor Rungvisai is the perfect fight for me.
“I have been waiting a long time for a fight like this, I spoke to my promoters Joven Sports, Manny Pacquiao and Mr. Bob Arum of Top Rank Boxing and told them please get me this fight next.”
Highly respected Bank Thainchai Pisitwuttinan of Nakornloung Promotion who co-promoted the high class event in Thailand alongside ONE Championship, which is the biggest sport media company in Asian history.
Pisitwuttinan knew Ancajas and his team would be attending the event was equally excited about the prospect of such a fight, which would allow his fighter to add another title to his growing cache of belts, if victorious.
“I think it would be a great fight,” said the young Thai promoter. “As of right now we do not know the future on what would be the next future for Srisaket. I think we will go back and take a rest and everybody come together and talk to everyone who is involved and we will see what is the next stop for us.
“[Ancajas] would be a great fight for sure, we would like to have lots of great fights to create history for Thailand but it would be very interesting.
“I’d like to thank them for flying all the way from the Philippines. Mr. Sean Gibbons flew from the U.S to be here with us. It’s a great honor for us to see them and to have them with us at the event.”
It is a golden super flyweight era. If Srisaket and Ancajas meet it would further cement both mens places in the division. Which is something to Viva about!
