WBC regular lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and mandatory challenger Rolando Romero went face to face and chest-to-chest at a hot-tempered press conference on Thursday to preview their volatile matchup for Davis’s WBA Lightweight Title taking place Saturday, May 28 on Showtime PPV from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
Tank Davis: “I hit him with one of these and I’m going to knock his whole nose off.”
Rolly Romero: “Gervonta Davis is ending up on the canvas knocked out. That’s what I can guarantee.”
GERVONTA DAVIS
“We’re ready and we’ve been in camp. This isn’t our first time getting ready for ‘Rolly’. We saw how he choked up when the lights are in his face. We’ll see how he reacts when everyone is cheering against him on fight night.
“Some people are made to do it, and some people just talk their way through it. We know what we’re coming here to do on May 28.
“We’ll see what this guy brings on fight night, under the bright lights. I had to walk through the door when it was time and become the man. Come fight night, it’s time to step up to that plate.
“This isn’t going to be an easy walk. Like my coach said, it’s about respect. I’m a man and he’s a man. We have our differences. We’ll see who’s the last man standing come fight night.
“I won my first title here and I’m grateful to be back at Barclays Center. I just want to be the best that I can be. It’s time for me to show that I’m the man in this sport. I believe that I’m the face of the lightweight division and I just want to live up to that. My goal is to go out there and be better than I was yesterday.
“He’s just worrying about power, he’s not working on anything else. Their only plan is to knock me out. I hit him with one of these and I’m going to knock his whole nose off. They just keep talking about knockouts and trying to get me out of there early, because they know he can’t last down the line.”
ROLANDO ROMERO
“I think ‘Tank’ is an amazing fighter, but this is going to be the easiest fight of my career. It’s going to say a lot about my legacy when I knock him out. ’Tank’ gets punched a lot. I think he’s going to run right into something big.
“I’ve always been underrated. May 28, you’re going to see my ring IQ on display. He’s the best fighter at 135 pounds and he’d be the best if he were at 130 pounds. It doesn’t matter to me though. I know what I’m capable of.
“I’m already a star otherwise I wouldn’t be in this position right now. I’m one of the few fighters to get to headline a pay-per-view 14 fights into my career.
“Everybody is underestimating me. I started boxing at 17 and I got my first belt seven years in. I’ve gone in there and beat up everybody. ‘Tank’ is getting knocked out and that’s that.
“Gervonta keeps talking about these skills he has, but I just see his face getting swollen up after every fight he has. He just bullies smaller opponents. He’s not that special. We’re ending his little reign and he can go retire.
“I was supposed to spend my birthday out here in New York anyway, so I’m excited to be fighting here in Brooklyn. This is a legacy fight for me and I’m excited to be able to have it at Barclays Center.
“Gervonta Davis is ending up on the canvas knocked out. That’s what I can guarantee.”
Some punchers step up in competition and realize their power isn’t what they thought at the higher levels (Lacy, Berlanga, ). Doesn’t look like he (Rolly) had much of an amateur career either. His awkward style may help him land a bomb.. who knows but I think Tank outclasses and gets him out of there. Should be fun while it lasts
Great fight, will definitely catch the high lights! 75 bucks super expensive these days when gas is still 6.79 for regular.
Just dropped to under $4/gallon for regular in the State of Zoo Jersey where they pump your gas for you.
Rolly is going to get rolled in 2-3 rounds max. Such a vast difference in talent here.
When Tank smashes him hes gonna Rolly Rolly Rolly with a dab of ranch and end up with shit in his pants
This fight is really interesting and most likely someone is going to end it in the horizontal position with the bubble right in the center. I see Romero making the fight plenty of friction and rough tactics, Gervonta in the other hand will try to land a monster haymaker to end the fight, but he might get caught as well, and that is the funny, interesting part.
Ooohh…this is gonna get super ugly. I feel sorry for the referee in this fight.
Tank by KO, Rolly nothing but hot air
I agree with E-Man. There is going to more headlocks, forearms and elbows than actual punches landed in this one
Rolly in 2!
Get him outta there Tank and move on to a real fighter…
This will be a career ending knockout and we will never hear from Rolly again.
Rolly gon’ get k.o.’d dirty! But, i give props to his promoters for put his man in the middle and cashing a nice check under his name!
Tank just dropped one of the most polite threats ever by saying that he will knock Rolly’s whole nose off with one shot. LOL!!!
If Romero can keep the jitters of the big stage under control, this might just turn out to be a hell of a brawl for as long as it lasts.
I see Davis slipping and countering for the first half of the fight and then BAM, fights over with a right hook-left uppercut combo as Rolando is backing away from the corner late in round 7.
Rolly will come out swinging. Tank will hit him hard and early and that will be that.
Romero being propped up as a legitimate threat to Tank, but this is a mismatch. Tank is going to blow this guy out. His alleged power, from winging shots, will never come into play as he will be in survival mode from the first moment he feels Tank’s power.
