Rivera dominates Leon

By Robert Coster

On Monday night at the Jaragua Renaissance Hotel and Casino in Santo Domingo, Dominican lightweight prospect Mitchell Rivera (14-0, 9 KOs) scored a TKO over Cuban Olympian (2008 Silver Medalist) Yankiel Leon (12-1, 9 KOs) in eight rounds. Mitchell was just too young, too fast and too strong for the game Leon whose corner kept him from coming out in round eight. The Rivera-Leon bout was the main event, scheduled for 10 rounds.

Other fights of the night had WBA #6 ranked flyweight Gregorio Lebron (21-4, 17 KOs) outscore granite-chinned Kelvin Figaro (9-4, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder. Lebron is hoping for a title shot this year.

Also, talented jr lightweight Hector Luis Garcia (8-0, 6 KOs), a former Dominican Olympian, knocked out Venezuelan Antoni Armas (8-3, 4 KOs) in just 57 seconds with a vicious shot to the body. It was the first time Armas was stopped.

The card was promoted by Cesar Mercedes (Manguita Boxing).
