Team Uzcategui stunned by Maryland Commission decision

The Maryland State Commission has lifted the indefinite suspension of Leon Lawson II, who assaulted a defenseless Jose Uzcategui inside the ring and on national TV after a bout that the Venezuelan born fighter had lost by disqualification. “I am shocked by this action taken by the Maryland Commission and its Executive Director Pat Pannela. This thug Lawson should never be allowed to work in boxing anywhere in the world and especially in Maryland where his violent actions took place,” said advisor Sean Gibbons on behalf of Team Uzcategui.

Uzcategui felt there was a miscarriage of justice when he was controversially disqualified against Andre Dirrell for a vacant interim super middleweight title on May 20, 2017 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, but in the mandated rematch he proved his point.

Uzcategui laid a beating on Dirrell, forcing the fight to be stopped two seconds into the ninth round as he claimed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) interim 168 pound belt in a one-sided fight on March third of this year at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“The first fight against Dirrell was as one-sided as the second and when I went to finish him, I knocked him out with a punch as the bell sounded to end the eight round. They said the punch was after the bell, but the referee blew it and I got wrongly disqualified. I was in shock standing in my corner when I was assaulted by his uncle and held myself in check not to retaliate so not start a riot, but what Lawson did should not have any forgiveness and he should have been suspended for life. Him getting his suspension lifted is wrong for boxing and Mr. Pannela should be ashamed for allowing it,” said Uzcategui.

Uzcategui is scheduled to return to the ring on September 28 in Oakland, California.
