Mexico’s Next Superstar?

By Robert Coster

He’s only 20 years old, but his growing fan base firmly believes that super featherweight Eduardo “Rocky ” Hernandez is on the path to stardom. The Mexico City native is unbeaten in 26 fights with 23 knockouts and is currently ranked 3rd by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Rocky turned pro at 16 and has systematically rolled over his opposition. He is on a streak of 20 consecutive knockouts. At 18, Hernandez won his first title, destroying Victor Terrazas (38-3-1) in two rounds to capture the WBC Latino belt. He then followed with a three round blowout of Hugo Santillan (12-1) for the WBC Youth World title, a belt he has defended 4 times.

In his last fight on July 14th, he clobbered Dominican boxer Marlyn Cabrera (24-2) in one round. Previous to that fight, Cabrera had gone 10 rounds with former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

Says trainer Pedro Gayosso, “Eduardo has God-given power like I have never seen.”

But Rocky strives to be a complete fighter. “I know that being a great fighter is not only about power,” he says. “It’s about skills, speed, resistance and I’m working on that in the gym.”

Trainer Gayosso concurs, “Rocky is much more than having two-fisted dynamite. He studies his opponent before he strikes, has good defense, is a great body puncher.”

In fact, Rocky’s body punching ability has drawn comparisons with the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. At the same moment in his career, Chavez was 26-0, 22 KOs, Hernandez is 26-0, 23 KOs — the numbers are eerily similar.

Rocky’s promoter Osvaldo Kuchle, President of Promociones del Pueblo, feels that his young star is ready for title contention. “Rocky would like to fight former world champion Francisco Vargas, the WBC’s 2nd ranked contender,” he stated. “A victory over Vargas would then open the door for Rocky to challenge WBC world champion Miguel Berchelt, also a dynamite KO artist.”

Says Rocky Hernandez, “I know that my career is at the crossroads of great challenges. I’m working hard with my manager Isaac Bustos, my trainer Pedro Gayosso, all my great team. I’m ready!”
