Mairena TKOs Perez in rematch

It has been tough times in Nicaragua of late with a lot of protests going on throughout the country. Fortunately, on Friday there was some entertainment for the local fans in the form of an outstanding well-matched fight card. WRAM Boxing – William Ramirez and Nica Boxing – Pablo Osuna continued their monthly boxing event. This time the site was the Instituto Nicaraguense de deporte (IND) Managua, Nicaragua.

The 8 round bantamweight main event saw unbeaten Brayan Mairena (10-0-1, 4 KOs) stop hard punching Bryan Perez (11-5-1, 10 KOs) in round six. The bout was a rematch of their draw last November.

The two picked up where they left off from trading heavy leather from the opening bell. It was still anybody’s fight when Perez sent Mairena down with a body shot in round 4. A fired up but not hurt Mairena arose quickly and came back swinging on the attack until rounds´ end. It was more heated exchanges in round 5. Then in round 6 Mairena rocked Perez with some heavy shots upstairs. Perez was badly hurt but fought back on instinct it seemed. Then Mairena froze Perez with a hard right to the chin along the ropes and the referee had seen enough and rightfully halted the bout. Official time was 1:00 of round 6. Good win for Mairena as he was very resilient and showed good promise for his future as a prospect.

The 6 round super flyweight co-feature was also a rematch. It pitted Nicaragua countrymen Elton Lara (16-3, 1NC, 9 KOs) vs Alexander Taylor (17-22-2, 1NC 10 KOs). The two fought back in February where Taylor won a close majority decision. Round 1 saw a very aggressive Lara attacking the body of Taylor relentlessly and coming over the top to the head as well. In round 2 it was more of the same by Lara when an accidental clash of heads left Taylor cut badly over his eye and unable to continue. The bout was ruled a no contest. Tough break for Lara who appeared to be on his way to avenging his previous loss to Taylor.

Former world minimumweight title challenger Eddy Castro (16-16-2, 11 KOs) earned a hard fought 6 round decision over journeyman and fellow Nicaraguan countrymen Byron Castellon (11-12-2, 2 KOs). Castro was the aggressor throughout and seemed to earn the victory with his pressure and timely punches.

In a battle of flyweights, Jerson Ortiz (12-2, 4 KOs) decisioned Nicaraguan countrymen Amilcar Maradiaga (6-3, 2 KOs).
