South African cruiserweight contender Kevin Lerena using his educated right jab boxed his way to a comfortable 12 rounds unanimous points decision over German-based Ukrainian Roman Golovashchenko at the Sarhadci Olympic Center in Baku, Azerbaijan on Saturday night.
The 30-year-old Golovaschenko (86.60kg) 19-2, 17 KOs, was a big disappointment as he showed very little of his vaunted power (81% knockout ratio) as he barrelled forward holding his gloves high up on his face. The scores were 116-111 and 115-112 twice, all in favor of Lerena. Lerena (90kg) possible won more rounds than reflected on the two 115-112 cards.
Lerena, 26, who improved his record to 21-1, 8 KOs, sustained a small out over his left eye but this well controlled by his corner and never a factor in the fight.
The two 115-112 scorecards were not a true reflection of the fight of the fight even though challenger came back strongly in the last two rounds. In round five the champion dropped Golovaschenko to his knees with a straight southpaw left where he took a count from referee Leszek J Kankowiak.
The small enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the fight even though it did not raise to any heights.
This was a good solid win for Lerena who is listed at number six cruiserweight by the WBA and at Number 4 by IBF.
Lerena is not listed in the British Boxing News weekly independent rankings.
The WBC/WBO cruiserweight champion is Oleksandra Usk from the Ukraine and WBA/IBF champion is Murat Gassiev of Russia.
A match-up with any one of the aforementioned fighters would be a true test for Lerena,
